What things made you realise you are old (tongue firmly in cheek!)

Very lighthearted before any pounces with age being a privilege etc. Im actually only 47 and am quite comfortable with aging. That disclaimer out of the way... what things did you used to think only "old people" do but now do yourself?

I never understood a fancy soap being a treat. Now I love going to TK Maxx and smelling the soaps before carefully choosing one to keep in my underwear drawer until I need to use it. It really is a treat!

I own and love Celtic and Co booties. I've had my current pair about a year. Im in the process if slowly going vegan and Im genuingely concerned about what I can replace these with when they eventually die.

Choosing comfortable clothes. Now this is difficult for me. Im not very confident about how my body looks right now so Im having to really fight the urge to just stop caring about clothes at all. Also, as someone who is short and fat, casual relaxed clothes will almost always look scruffy, not stylish.

Working in a university and finding young people in their early 20s to be unfathomable. It's like they are from a different planet.

A very kind young woman offered me her seat on the tube last summer

When my daughter wrote at school “my parents were born in the late 1900s”

Realising that my date of birth is closer to when Queen Victoria was alive than it is to today.

Well mine was during Covid when DH and I were thinking how we could help any old people living in our street and realised with a shock that as far as everyone else was concerned we were the old people.

I'm Irish, so Leo Varadkar made me feel very old by becoming Taoiseach while being quite a few years younger than me.

And quitting while still practically a child!

My 13 year old sister (16 year age gap) recently asked me what it was like going to school on a horse and cart…

Seeing 90s clothing described as “vintage”

How can that be, the 90s was only a couple of years ago surely?!

Unfortunately my hair started going grey and being dyed when I was about 27 but these days I know I'm getting older because:

I shudder at teens out in winter without coats on.
Policemen look like they should be still at school.
I enjoyed every second of the Chelsea flower show on TV and a garden centre is my new favourite place to hang out.
I have no real wish to go out at night anymore and am happy to be in with a glass of wine.
Stuff I remember is archaic to the next generation, I've recently had to explain the purpose of a VHS, a payphone and Byker Grove. It hurts my soul.

SammyScrounge · 27/05/2025 22:55

When I was the only one who could explain to a class what a florin, a half crown a shilling, and a farthing were. Also £ s d.

When the film came out I asked my mum if she remembered the Titanic sinking. She was not impressed!

I do remember my aunt joking with my mother that her children seemed to think they grew up wearing crinolines. Until that moment so did I!

mepipesneedlagging · 27/05/2025 23:07

Looking forward to Springwatch/Winter watch and Antiques Roadshow at their respective 8pm time slots, aleady in my pyjamas with a decaff Tea.
I don't settle down to watch telly until I'm 'ready for bed' 😁

Avecmonbuster · 27/05/2025 23:11

Looking at sportsmen and instead of thinking 'he's hot!' I now think 'Aww bless, I bet his parents are proud/I hope he doesn't get hurt' Etc.

Also, an interest in birds. Went my whole life just living alongside them, now find them fascinating at forty!!

When I fell over and had to sit down for a few minutes because of the shock.
Gone are the days of leaping up before anyone sees!
I remember hearing a loud thud and realising that was me hitting the floor. Falling over as you get older is actually quite traumatic!

You have my sympathy. I fell over when I was last pregnant at 39 and it was such a shock I actually cried.

The Now That's What I Call Music albums are always a safe bet to make me feel ancient. My first one was 33 but I saw recently that they're currently up to Now 120!

EBearhug · 27/05/2025 23:28

Grey pubes.

I did Thatcherism at uni for my history degree - she'd only gone out the term before, and we weren't the first year to do that module.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 27/05/2025 23:42

One younger colleague in the office had no idea what a compliment slip was. Another said she’d never really listened to any of the Beatles music as it was all a bit rubbish.

When some of the new starters DOB are after I started working for the company.

RunsWithDinosaurs · 28/05/2025 05:56

When I went to a gig and the crowd looked old and it slowly dawned on me that almost everyone’s my age. The few younger gig goers were brought along by their parents because the act has gained retro cool. Also that the band’s hay day was longer ago than The Beatles height of fame or Woodstock would have been when I was a teen and remembering how long ago that seemed!

I used to ride a motorbike.

My transport now is a mobility scooter.

My first one was Now That's What I Call Music on vinyl 😆 I have all the first ten.

My tolerance to alcohol is out the window- 1 sip and I feel drunk and or sleepy. If I persevere hangovers last for what feels like days- tend to just not really bother anymore.

only recently- adore my garden

Always welcome a nice cup of tea

no longer bothered about DIY partly as I know I will ache after

the thought of travelling to far flung destinations now fills me with dread instead of excitement because of the ‘unknown’ and not being sure if I’d get a comfy bed.

WomenInSTEM · 28/05/2025 06:53

I had Now That's What I Call Music 6.

Off to google the track list...
