What things made you realise you are old (tongue firmly in cheek!)

Very lighthearted before any pounces with age being a privilege etc. Im actually only 47 and am quite comfortable with aging. That disclaimer out of the way... what things did you used to think only "old people" do but now do yourself?

I never understood a fancy soap being a treat. Now I love going to TK Maxx and smelling the soaps before carefully choosing one to keep in my underwear drawer until I need to use it. It really is a treat!

I own and love Celtic and Co booties. I've had my current pair about a year. Im in the process if slowly going vegan and Im genuingely concerned about what I can replace these with when they eventually die.

Choosing comfortable clothes. Now this is difficult for me. Im not very confident about how my body looks right now so Im having to really fight the urge to just stop caring about clothes at all. Also, as someone who is short and fat, casual relaxed clothes will almost always look scruffy, not stylish.

My chin hair.

🤣 me too

PorgyandBess · 27/05/2025 19:26

Our dinners with friends (we range from 47 to 54) now feature conversations about menopause, ailing parents, illnesses and investments. 😂

Gettingbysomehow · 27/05/2025 19:26

My neck. The horror. I'm going to be getting it "done" in January. I can't look at it. The rest I don't care about only the neck.

Anjo2011 · 27/05/2025 19:28

When it rained all day today I was happy because the garden needs it.

Hard to believe that that strike was 40 years' ago!

Oh, I need a lie down...

Me too... that is surely "modern history" (I didn't even study WWII at school!)

Yes, the Miners' Strike is now longer ago than the end of WW2 was when I was doing my A levels and I thought that was ancient history at the time!

Seeing 90s clothing described as “vintage”

Me too... reading this thread, I am the older side of middle aged (which is good because I don't fancy my chances at 100+)

Go on, tell us about the neck job! We (well me) will be watching with interest. I was very ill a few years ago and lost stones in weight. My poor neck never recovered. The face will pass at a push having filled out a bit by now, but the flipping neck.... 😊

As for knowing I'm getting old, at 68 I still feel 40, full of beans and loving life. No aches, pains, oofs on getting out of bed etc. BUT..... I was offered a seat in the "elderly" section of the bus the other day, by a man who looked older than me! I accepted graciously but was a bit meh in my head. But that's it folks, it's official, I'm getting old or at least I look it to some!

shiningstar2 · 27/05/2025 19:56

My 73rd birthday 😁 Have outlived my dad by 14 years. Mind you my mother is 94 still od sound mind and driving her little car on local journeys, though just in daylight hours so hoping I'm good for a few years yet 😁

Don’t go to discovery museum then. I’m early 40s and they have things from my childhood behind glass.

For me it’s turning the radio down so I can see better when I’m driving.

zenas · 27/05/2025 20:04

@shiningstar2 That's fantastic about your mum having her independence at 94. Gives us all a bit of a lift about getting older! I hope you have inherited her "long" genes.

I had to give up driving due to an illness (I'm fine but banned lol). It took me a long time to come to terms with not being able to go anywhere I wanted without forward planning, but I'm used to it now. And the extra exercise involved in using public transport is helping me a lot to keep active. I am now at a stage where I am looking at a small electric bike, the pushbike is not working on the hills here for me anymore😊

Scrolling down the years to fill in a form. Realise I was born in a different century/millennium to my colleagues

EnjoythemoneyJane · 27/05/2025 20:13

Realising that one of the most blissfully happy moments in my year is the first day I’m able to dry sheets outside. And the second happiest moment is putting them back on the bed all fresh and smelling of outside.

I’ve no idea when this crept up on me, but it definitely feels like a nanna tipping point (although my own grandma was an amazing adventurer who was far too busy doing interesting stuff to even worry about - let alone talk about - laundry, so I’m not even sure where the notion came from!).

shiningstar2 · 27/05/2025 20:14

She marvellous @zenas and I do hope I have her genes and energy. Still independently at home with the help of a weekly cleaner and summer only gardener. Goes to a sit down exercise class once a week, a ladies club every Friday and another once a month club. She collects the weekly subs meticulously, making sure those who've missed a week pay up double subs 🤣🤣 Drives herself over to me for Sunday lunch unless it is raining, then dh collects her. I order her 'big' shop with mine but if I forget/ can't get anything she cheerfully sets out for it in her car another day. 'Allows' me to do her towels and sheets alternative weeks but is absolutely adamant she can do the rest of her washing herself. Not a bad example to try to follow. Long may her independence continue. She is a gutsy lady and I love her ♥️

My childhood heroes looking really old or dying off.

SantanaBinLorry · 27/05/2025 20:21

Pretty much every device in the house, mechanical or electrical is know as the thingy machine.
(There's just so many of them 😫)

Leg and travel pillows.

Screamingabdabz · 27/05/2025 20:27

The day I discovered the mind blowing and futuristic technology of Blue Tooth and at the same time a young person actually pointed out, gently, that it had already been around for over a decade and was kinda old-school. 🤦🏻‍♀️

cakeorwine · 27/05/2025 20:27

Work colleagues were talking about a new starter who they said was young. However, I think my work colleagues are young!

kary42 · 27/05/2025 20:29

When I turned 50 I bizarrely got asked for ID in a supermarket when buying alcohol as I didn't look over 25 and if I wanted the retired discount at the swimming pool. I think one of them needed to go to Specsavers but not sure which. My family found both hilarious.

Bonjovispyjamas · 27/05/2025 20:33

People letting me on the bus before them, even though they were there first. I'm 58, not 98 🤣 Guess I'm not aging well.

dustydvd · 27/05/2025 20:35

Taking a flask of coffee when we went on a long journey.

Actually it must have been before that - when we bought the flask…

sesquipedalian · 27/05/2025 20:36

Being offered a seat on the tube. Kind young men offering to carry my luggage up stairs for me.
