Duvet positioning revelation

PippaXo · 20/05/2025 08:28

I did what another Mumsnet user recommended this morning and placed my king sized duvet with the stitched lines going horizontally inside the duvet cover. Revelation was that it fitted so much better. Apparently, this is how they are meant to go. Can't believe that I have never realised this in all the years!

You didn't realise how to put a duvet in a cover correctly, for years? 😂

User57713 · 20/05/2025 08:32

What? I didn't know this either. I thought a king size duvet was pretty much square so I just put it in the cover whichever random way I pick it up

Malvala · 20/05/2025 08:35

A 230cm x 220cm duvet is not square 😂

I think some maths lessons might help.

If I'm not sure, I fold them in half and hold the duvet in both hands seeing how far it reaches. Do this both ways. The longer half goes across the bed.
Double duvets are square so it doesn't really matter. King Size are definitely wider than they are long.

Sexisthairdressers · 20/05/2025 08:37

I don't mind any household task EXCEPT changing the duvet. It's so fiddly and difficult.

EBearhug · 20/05/2025 08:39

What stitching? My duvet is quilted in squares.

So are all of mine.

Gettingbysomehow · 20/05/2025 08:40

I've solved these problems by buying only coverless duvets. Duvet covers are too much faff altogether.

Palsaq · 20/05/2025 08:46

This annoys me so much I've sewn a bit of ribbon on the short end.

McCartneyOnTheHeath · 20/05/2025 08:49

Whaaat?! I don't think I could sleep if I knew the quilted lines were horizontal.

ExpressiveDelivery · 20/05/2025 08:53

Ours is stitched in squares too. I have marked the sides with a sharpie on the seams so we always know those are the sides and not the top and bottom.

EilishMcCandlish · 20/05/2025 08:57

I still can't get over how many people have been putting duvets into their covers the wrong way for decades. Surely it is obvious that if you have duvet rucked up top and bottom and empty cover at the sides, you are doing it wrong? Confused
I can understand getting it wrong the first time. But after that, no.

We have a single duvet each far far easier and I sleep better too.

Wait, what? King size duvets are wider than they're long? Why did nobody tell me this?

Same here 😂

Moier · 20/05/2025 09:08

I do this with double too.
Long ways across.

Conkerjar · 20/05/2025 09:10

I changed a superking duvet cover all by myself last night. Horizontal lines indeed. It's the only thing preventing me from hulking out and ripping them all up... Or getting stuck inside the cover and going to sleep.

10 cm in over 2 metres doesn't make that much difference ! And indeed Google reckons it's 225 x 220 for king size cover which is an even smaller difference

Same. I wfh and really want to go and check mine now, but I really don't have time to change it. I'll add it to my list to do later.

nzeire · 20/05/2025 09:18

Just saying, it was a revelation to me too :)

I was blaming my duvet covers

But THE FLAPPY DUVET BITS WITH NO QUILT IN THEM. They make me feel ill!

I can recommend a set of 4 giant plastic clothes pegs, v cheap from Amazon. So if I have to do it single-handed, I feed one corner of duvet into a bottom corner, fasten with first peg.
Repeat with 2nd.
Then 2 top corners, give it a really good shake, preferably from the bottom, do up buttons, bingo.
I’ve often done a super king like this.

I should get some. Unfortunately I spent all my fun money on books this month so I'll just have to carry on suffering. Or cover myself with books instead. I have enough of them...

Pinepeak2434 · 20/05/2025 09:24

I have no idea whether I do this or not I just grab any corner and shove it in the duvet cover.
