Duvet positioning revelation

PippaXo · 20/05/2025 08:28

I did what another Mumsnet user recommended this morning and placed my king sized duvet with the stitched lines going horizontally inside the duvet cover. Revelation was that it fitted so much better. Apparently, this is how they are meant to go. Can't believe that I have never realised this in all the years!

If I'm not sure, I fold them in half and hold the duvet in both hands seeing how far it reaches. Do this both ways. The longer half goes across the bed.
Double duvets are square so it doesn't really matter. King Size are definitely wider than they are long.

No need to do that. Fold it in half diagonally, you'll see which is the longer side immediately.

graceinspace999 · 20/05/2025 09:30

That California roll in the video looked too faffy.

I put left top corner of the duvet in the cover - then holding it in my mouth I do the other corner then just shake it down.

Easy.

TianasBayou · 20/05/2025 09:32

I have written on the labels of super-king sheets and duvet which corner the label goes in (usually bottom right or top left).

Pondering giant pegs now - I have sunbed towel clips which might work.

My duvets, no matter the size, all have a label on them (washing instructions). That little label always goes at the bottom of the cover. Duvets fit perfectly.

We have a single duvet each far far easier and I sleep better too.

Ditto!

EleanorReally · 20/05/2025 09:47

our duvet has the same amount of squares so must be a square

I still can't get over how many people have been putting duvets into their covers the wrong way for decades. Surely it is obvious that if you have duvet rucked up top and bottom and empty cover at the sides, you are doing it wrong? Confused
I can understand getting it wrong the first time. But after that, no.

Never noticed a “wrong” way. I put my duvet in any which way and it’s always fine.

A 230cm x 220cm duvet is not square 😂

I think some maths lessons might help.

Come on, I don’t think she meant that she thought 230x220 was a square because she doesn’t understand maths 🙄

She’s probably just never looked at the actual dimensions. We have a double and I’ve just had to go a quick google to confirm that that is square - not because I don’t understand squares but because I’ve never cared to look at the cm width and length.

QuantumPanic · 20/05/2025 10:06

My duvet is 200x200, according to the label. 🤔 Hang on, going to fetch the measuring tape.

Well, TIL I've been using a double duvet on a king size bed. 🤷

MyKingdomForACat · 20/05/2025 10:28

I’ve got a king size duvet on a double bed so it hangs better over the sides. I just put it in the cover whatever way 🤷‍♀️

It’s a surprise to me that some people can get up in the morning and put their underwear on the right way round.

BruisedNeckMeat · 20/05/2025 10:33

Mine has eight squares across and seven down.

All bunched at the top and empty sides makes me feel sick.

Yes, but I have a super king, it's too unwieldy to fold diagonally.

That's pretty much a square! Enough of a square for me not to notice its actually a rectangle

EleanorReally · 20/05/2025 10:42

W230cm x L220cm

no bother!

Odds are that yours is a standard double then. They are square - 200x200. With a small dose of common sense, you can see that will make no difference and there is no 'wrong' way with a square.

King and Super king duvets (and their covers) are not square. Same as single duvets are not and you wouldn't put one of those in sideways! None of this is stuff that requires any form of advanced education.

PippaXo · 20/05/2025 12:48

LoafofSellotape · 20/05/2025 08:30

You didn't realise how to put a duvet in a cover correctly, for years? 😂

Well I grant you that the difference between putting the duvet in the right way to the wrong way is not massive. There is only about 2 inches difference between the width and length of a king size duvet. However, if you put it in with the widest part of the duvet going horizontally instead of vertically, the cover fits perfectly instead of sort of fitting.
The concept of a perfectly fitting duvet cover gives much satisfaction. Probably too much time on my hands!

lemon6 · 20/05/2025 13:18

I always put my king size duvet in vertically it fits perfectly. The super king we use in winter fits horizontally.

Conkerjar · 20/05/2025 09:21

But THE FLAPPY DUVET BITS WITH NO QUILT IN THEM. They make me feel ill!

I just put that on DH's side!

BoobsOnTheMoon · 20/05/2025 13:59

Surely everyone washes duvet covers inside out and then puts them on the duvet by sticking arms into the inside out cover to the top corners, then grabbing top corners of the duvet through the cover, and then shaking the cover over the duvet? No need for clothes pegs!
