Duvet positioning revelation

PippaXo · 20/05/2025 08:28

I did what another Mumsnet user recommended this morning and placed my king sized duvet with the stitched lines going horizontally inside the duvet cover. Revelation was that it fitted so much better. Apparently, this is how they are meant to go. Can't believe that I have never realised this in all the years!

Surely everyone washes duvet covers inside out and then puts them on the duvet by sticking arms into the inside out cover to the top corners, then grabbing top corners of the duvet through the cover, and then shaking the cover over the duvet? No need for clothes pegs!

That's what I do, but you need pretty long arms. Mine already are quite long and I think pegs would help.

Odds are that yours is a standard double then. They are square - 200x200. With a small dose of common sense, you can see that will make no difference and there is no 'wrong' way with a square.

King and Super king duvets (and their covers) are not square. Same as single duvets are not and you wouldn't put one of those in sideways! None of this is stuff that requires any form of advanced education.

I mean, it’s the dullest conversation I’ve ever participated in… but, no. It’s a king sized bed and a king sized duvet and cover. It’s always fine.

I've solved these problems by buying only coverless duvets. Duvet covers are too much faff altogether.

Love my sons coverless duvet but we have a superking bed so can’t get a coverless one!

I have an ikea European King size which I think is 220cm by 240cm, so I have written a small w in sharpie on the longest so I know. This is the lightweight on as the heavier one , the pockets are rectangular so I can tell.

WannaSweetie · 20/05/2025 15:22

Housekeeper here, make sure the tag on the duvet is located at the side when you’re stuffing it in the duvet cover, whether it’s got lines or squares….

I do but we have a single each.

Handy to see which way round it goes & even a shortarse like me has long enough arms to easily change the cover!

Are you tall, @BoobsOnTheMoon ? I'm quite short, and can envisage myself disappearing into the duvet cover, never to be seen again............. :)

TheKeeperOfTissues · 20/05/2025 15:54

I don't have a KS duvet, but I can't bear the duvet not being all the way to the edges of the cover.
I start with the cover inside out, my hands inside, grab corners and shake cover down.
Admittedly the heaviest duvet I own is 4 tog so not an arduous task.
But I do prefer coverless duvets. Much less arsing about

isitmeamithedrama · 20/05/2025 15:54

changing the bed is least favourite task changing a super king bed on my own feels like a workout. Thankfully my duvet has a big label that goes to the bottom, I’d usually cut them off but that one stays purely so I know it’s the right way!

HappyPerson258 · 20/05/2025 15:55

I didn’t know either OP. Wild! It’s been a revelation 💀🤣

vbacqueen1 · 20/05/2025 15:56

I can put a superking duvet cover on from start to finish in about two minutes, including doing up the buttons.
The secret is to start with the cover inside out. Then just reach your hands inside into each top corner, grab the top corners of your duvet, give it a shake, throw it onto the bed then just put the bottom corners in and shake again from the bottom.
I Know that the label on my duvet has to be on the side for it to fit properly, if it was done wrong it would have to be redone!

Made me laugh.....

Never noticed a “wrong” way. I put my duvet in any which way and it’s always fine.

Depends on what size your duvet is though, a superking 260x220 isn’t going to be “fine” every time 😂

TorroFerney · 20/05/2025 16:29

LoafofSellotape · 20/05/2025 08:30

You didn't realise how to put a duvet in a cover correctly, for years? 😂

I didn’t know this, it’s completely counter intuitive. It also fits fine the way we do it, so id not noticed it was wrong.

Chemenger · 20/05/2025 08:39

So are all of mine.

Count the squares. The side with the most goes in across the bed.

i hope you use a sheet between “you” and the duvet or wash them week

minnienono · 20/05/2025 16:48

Mine is 225x225 Apparently

how do you clean a coverless one?

I'm short (5'3") and I have every single type of cover here, from single to super king, anyway. I'd say for this height that method works great up to a double. I did my sons king size this way today and did indeed get lost inside, luckily made it out to make another bed but it was touch and go to be honest. I'm too lazy to buy and keep pegs though, so I will keep doing it and remembering it's a pain for our bed (sk) and his (k) - it's a fab method for singles and doubles though.

julesagain · 11/07/2025 23:28

I have three different weight duvets. The heaviest is easy and they are slightly rectangular pockets. The medium weight is square pockets so I have put a small w in a sharpie on the wider side so I can tell. I will do the same with the new 2 tog wool one when I next use it as I'm currently using just a top sheet .

PullTheBricksDown · 11/07/2025 23:33

Sexisthairdressers · 20/05/2025 08:37

I don't mind any household task EXCEPT changing the duvet. It's so fiddly and difficult.

Same, except that I do in fact mind other household tasks. But the most hated one is changing the duvet cover.

How is it counter intuitive? Pillows go horizontally across the bed, so do the duvet lines.

The pillows don’t have lines on.

however your post is timely as, when we last washed the cover we did it this new revelatory way. Woke up in the middle of the night a few nights ago to realise I now have the poppers/fastenings down my side rather than the bottom so my husband has effectively turned it round so the lines are going down the bed but the cover isn’t. So he must think it isn’t right that way.
