Friend not accepting she’s NOT doing 28,000 steps per day

Just can’t convince her! Showed her that her app is picking up arm movement ..got her to move her arm whilst seated 😳 but she still insists she’s nearly up to 30,000 every day!

Just read on here that someone is doing 10,000 steps per day but this is really hard to achieve!

How do people squeeze it in alongside work/parenting/household stuff? I manage 5,000 steps in an active role ..nowhere near the recommended 🤨

10,000 is hard! I walk most evenings for about 45 mins and probably only clock up 2,000 or so
I think you are under-recording, unless you walk very slowly. I'd expect to walk 1km in 10-15 min. Unless you have incredibly long legs, you won't cover 1m per stride, so you'd expect to be more than 1000 steps per km. A very easy 45 min walk should be 3000+ steps.

Agree with this. I have just over 1km walk from bus stop to work and it takes me an average of 12 to 13 mins and is around 1500 steps. I am usually at about 2500 steps when I arrive at work in the morning. I usually walk around 30 mins at lunch time which adds another 3000 steps, then walk to bus at home time another 1500. Another 1000 just general pottering about is 8000. If I go to the supermarket, do a bit of work in the garden or a quick round the block with the dog 10,000 easily without actually trying too hard.
If PP is only clocking up 2000 steps in 45 mins they must be walking extremely slowly.

KellySeveride · 16/05/2025 19:41

This is mine for today. And I have walked more than usual. I have a sedentary job and generally manage 7k steps a day just by walking from my car to the office, a lunchtime walk of 20 minutes, and walking back to my car at the end of the day.

I have long legs so I think my step count to km covered is pretty low.

28k is a lot. I walked a whole day round NYC and only managed 23k.

10,000 steps × 0.673 meters stride length = 6,730 meters (6.73 km). You just have to look at how overweight the majority of people are to understand how mich they kid themselves. I don't need a Fitbit to know when I've sat on my arse all day...

Botanybaby · 16/05/2025 19:44
  1. 10000 is not hard to achieve it's pretty basic
  2. Unused to be doing around 25/30k a day when I worked in a warehouse when we were saving for a holiday and I took a second job
  3. You are a shitty friend
Away2000 · 16/05/2025 19:48

5k is my average for relaxed days when I’m not doing much. 10k+ is normal when I’m actually doing something that day like walking in the countryside. I’ve done 28k+ on 12 hour nursing shifts, but my legs ache afterwards. I probably walk more than normal though as I hate driving and public transport.

WingingItMam48 · 16/05/2025 19:53

I know that for me I can do roughly 500 steps in 5 minutes so I know when my fit bit is being accurate and when it's not. If I walk round the supermarket with my hands on the trolley handle it doesnt register I'm moving at all even when I do it for an hour.

FebruaryUsername · 16/05/2025 19:34

5000 is very low.. I can do 10000 on one dog walk and it's definitely steps rather than arm movement

10k steps is 5 miles so that’s a fairly long dog walk, it isn’t nipping round the block.

If I don’t go out all day and am working I can easily do under 2k. I generally get to 15k at the weekend and make sure I at least walk 2 miles daily so minimum of around 6k.

I have averaged 9k a day this year according to Apple Watch, but of course some of the time it’s out of battery.

BobbyBiscuits · 16/05/2025 19:55

I don't think even a postman or a door to door work person with no car would do that much.

I used to do home visits on foot and each shift could be about 8-9k (thousand steps not kilometres.) Then I walked to and from my day job on top so that was another 8k.

My shoes got worn out and I was constantly knackered, and I now have osteoporosis! So I don't believe 28k is remotely healthy. Unless you're a professional marathon runner?

So she must be living in fantasy land. But let her get on with it I guess. Unless she's trying to do a fundraiser and lying to extract money off people.

MumWifeOther · 16/05/2025 20:00

I don’t have an Apple Watch and never would, but my phone counts my steps when I’ve got it on me and walking around and I do about 13,000 steps a day that are recorded. I do walk every day if possible for an hour at least and I do school run, nip to shops etc etc. I reckon I must be averaging about 20,000 in total a day. 5,000 steps is very low

GoodWorkSally · 16/05/2025 20:02

I get around 4500 steps in 45 mins walking, and I'm not young or particularly fast

Ditto. I don't walk very fast and I'm late 60s but do well over 4000 in 45 mins.

Lemonyyy · 16/05/2025 20:03

I’d only do 28k on holiday (think city break walking round town for 8+ hours, or a hike out somewhere) today I did 11500, did the dog walk and 1 school run so not loads, I think if you don’t have a dog or a regular reason to walk somewhere you do need to make a conscious decision in order to reach 10,000 but if you have any admin type walking you’ll do it without noticing.

MumWifeOther · 16/05/2025 20:05

MrsSunshine2b · 16/05/2025 19:20

I work from home in a sedentary role and manage between 5,000 and 7,000 if I go for a decent walk after work, then around 8,000 on a weekend day as I've got more time.

10,000 is 5 miles and over 2 hours of walking. If you aren't on your feet in the working day, how are people fitting in 2 hours of walking, and still making dinner, putting the kids to bed and loading the dishwasher? Especially people that live in cities in the winter? Are people just out there trudging the streets in circles for hours in the dark every night, taking it in turns to watch the kids? Or does their commute involve a lot of steps?

I'm not sure 28,000 would be very good for your joints.

10,000 steps for me is about an hour and 15 mins of walking? Albeit brisky!

CreateAUsername25 · 16/05/2025 20:06

10000 isn't hard at all. I do over 4000 doing school runs alone. I try mostly to walk places . Work I do a fair few too. I don't think I ever do under 10k on a weekday. Weekends maybe 5k
My df does around 20k a day at work. Plus walking to and from , walking dogs 3x a day.

Chick981 · 16/05/2025 20:07

10k is pretty easy if you have kids. Does she do sport or run? As that really wracks the steps up. They are inaccurate yes but they wouldn’t for example add 20,000 steps on. Also why do you think yours is accurate and hers isn’t?

GreenFressia · 16/05/2025 20:07

10000 steps for me is walking 25 mins each way to the office from the station = 50 mins total. That's a brisk power walk....maybe underestimating as also includes from my house to station and across station concourse, my office is quite big and also going out at lunchtime.

For 28000 steps that would be achievable over a full non stop day maybe 4 hours solid walking round shops and not sitting down.

That’s 15 minute miles by my measure Very brisk or maybe you have short legs, which must make a difference.

MrsSkylerWhite · 16/05/2025 20:09

Why are you bothered?

I’m 5’10 so not in my world 😂

Benmac · 16/05/2025 20:11

Teateaandmoretea · 16/05/2025 20:10

I guess the difference in height explains it then!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 16/05/2025 20:17

From a google search:

The concept of walking 10,000 steps a day was popularized by a Japanese company called Yamasa Clock in the 1960s. They designed the world's first wearable pedometer, called the Manpo-kei, which
Translates to "10,000 step meter."

It certainly makes a difference for sure.

FreddoSwaggins · 16/05/2025 20:31

Nothing like a thread about step counts to show the absolutely huge variation there is in the number of steps people are ready to believe they've taken.

Though I do think anyone who claims 10;000 is easy because they do 5,000 steps "pottering: around the kitchen just making breakfast, are deluded. Even if they are really doing 5,000 steps because they are an Oompa Loompa in a long tight skirt, those 5,000 pottering steps aren't the equivalent of exercise.

Measurements everyone should be monitoring are minutes of movement there heart rate is raised.

CyclingAddict · 16/05/2025 20:36

just returned from getting my steps up 😃😃
calculated the old fashioned way by actually counting my steps and it was just under 100 in one minute so every time I do a 45 min walk I’m probably clocking up 4-4,200 steps HURRAH
