Friend not accepting she’s NOT doing 28,000 steps per day

Just can’t convince her! Showed her that her app is picking up arm movement ..got her to move her arm whilst seated 😳 but she still insists she’s nearly up to 30,000 every day!

Just read on here that someone is doing 10,000 steps per day but this is really hard to achieve!

How do people squeeze it in alongside work/parenting/household stuff? I manage 5,000 steps in an active role ..nowhere near the recommended 🤨

Agree OP - I get a step count from moving my arms when driving

Butchyrestingface · 16/05/2025 18:21

I used to do around 14,000 a day, sustained it for a couple of years before foot injury kicked in. 10,000 steps wasn't remotely hard to achieve. Confused

28,000 every day would be very difficult, imo. But really, why does it matter?

terracelane23 · 16/05/2025 18:21

I do between 12,000 - 25,000 but I do a manual job and have high energy dogs to walk every day. Without those two factors I’d struggle to do more than 5,000 I think.

Abra1t · 16/05/2025 18:22

I have the same device as my husband and he always records more steps than me on a long walk.

steff13 · 16/05/2025 18:22

Why do you need to convince her? If she wants to believe she takes 28K steps a day, let her.

RainBow725 · 16/05/2025 18:24

I play a string instrument and can easily get to 10000 steps on my watch after a lengthy rehearsal whilst sitting on my arse. Meanwhile in reality I’d have to walk 4 miles to get 10000 steps.

BeansCounter · 16/05/2025 18:25

God. I've worked from home today and have currently clocked 1,048 steps. That's poor but I haven't really done much more than desk, kettle, desk, toilet all day.

10,000 per day is my goal but it's definitely not as easily achievable for me as it is for others. I will have to prioritise and build the time for it into my day!

stayathomer · 16/05/2025 18:26

I used to work in an active retail role, up and down stairs and between large stock room and large store and I remember on a really busy day getting to 18000 and on a day that I thought was busy (but was just that I was tired lol), got 10600.

Who cares how many she’s doing- I’d say if you did a study where you told someone they were doing that amount they’d have more of a spring in their step which is probably the case here! If you’re her friend just don’t discuss steps!!!!

MereNoelle · 16/05/2025 18:26

So what if she thinks she’s doing 28000 steps a day? How is it affecting your life?

HorrorFan81 · 16/05/2025 18:27

This is my day so far. Over 12 miles walked (including a bit of running). 28k steps. I cant imagine getting this amount of steps without alot of effort

I work an office job in a school and average 9000 steps a day. My husband works in operating theatres and does 18000 steps a day. If we had a day out it wouldn't be unusual to top 15000. If you're walking you do about 5000 steps in an hour.

ChoppyChoppy · 16/05/2025 16:06

Lots are very accurate. My pals and I sometimes compare ours after we’ve done a long hike and they are often almost exactly the same and the readings also tie in with the route length if we are using a walking app.

Same here, except for my tall friends who do significantly fewer steps because they have longer strides 🤣

She’s on her feet most of the day but in a smallish space
has a nap when she gets home
no running half marathons or anything

my active role is a three hour shift (I do other (sedentary work))

10,000 is hard! I walk most evenings for about 45 mins and probably only clock up 2,000 or so

If I walk for 45 mins (and I am by no means a speed walker) I do 5000 plus steps!

10000 is a normal walk with a friend for me

whiteroseredrose · 16/05/2025 18:30

I have a VERY sedentary job so have a 20 min morning or evening walk which is about 3000 steps. When I had a Fitbit and worked in a bank I thought I was doing 10k steps, but most was counting out bank notes Grin

LandSharksAnonymous · 16/05/2025 18:31

For most people, 2,000 is 1 mile. Walking 1 mile in 45 minutes is incredibly slow...the average person walks 3 miles in an hour.

I do 25-30K steps a day (when not in the office) easily.

BeakyFlinders · 16/05/2025 18:32

Tell her to put the monitor on her ankle. I moved my Fitbit from wrist to ankle and it made a huge difference (negative) to my daily steps.

How does an apple watch record steps if it's on your arm!!

They're set for movement patterns. My smart watch knows if I'm rowing, kayaking, cross training, walking or running!

Tattletail · 16/05/2025 18:34

I once did 30000 steps. But to put into context I had spent a whole day walking around Hong Kong sight seeing. I do think a huge portion of those were spent lost walking around various gigantic train stations 🙈

Ariela · 16/05/2025 18:42

If I had my phone in my pocket I probably would do 20k+ per day.

I can rack up 10k before 10am easily. Dog walk, horses to muck out & go out, hang washing out and that's before going to work. However I don't carry my phone everywhere with me.

How fast are you walking? I do over 3 miles in 45 mins and that’s around 7250 steps.

Enko · 16/05/2025 18:45

I walk 20 mins to office and 20 mins back thats 8K. Then I just got to manage 1K more thats doable with a short walk at lunch.

Butchyrestingface · 16/05/2025 18:45

I did 50,000 steps in one day a couple of years ago.

I was out on an organised walk and finished at 35,000 steps. But I decided to keep going so I break the mythical 50,000 steps barrier on my pedometer and then never need to do it again.

Not gonna lie, it nearly killed me. But now I never need to do it again.

TheFormidableMrsC · 16/05/2025 18:46

No way. I’m on my feet all day as I work in a school. I walk to work and back and I’m forever running about everywhere. I only use the car when it’s too far to walk and I do a really long walk every evening after dinner. Max 15k steps.

I really wish I had a step tracker when I did the Moonwalk. I’d love to know how many steps that 26 miles was!
