Worst aspects of hot weather

For me it’s
-Wasps, flies in the house, and bastardy bitey bugs.
Spent yesterday evening in the garden watering the veggies and I got bitten in 6 different places.

It’s all clothing related.

first in that I detest my flab and don’t seem to be able to dress myself in anything that doesn’t make me feel either even more flabby or like a German hiker.

Then I’ll settle on a pair of shorts but no matter how well they fit, the bastards ride up my inner thigh so I keep having to do this weird little leg kick as I’m walking every 10 seconds so they drop down.

And if I go with a skirt or dress (that doesn’t make me feel like a tent), I have to wear chub run shorts which just make me sweaty.

Oh, and the heat flares up my dermatitis so my hands feel like they’re on fire.

I actually love the summer, I just have a body that does not.

That little leg kick 😂 you and me both lol. Shorts always ride up when you walk..

Paleshelter · 15/05/2025 23:38

The wee assholes whizzing up and down on quadbikes and ebikes, nearly crashing into cars etc, being very intimidating. Have already phoned the police twice but not holding out much hope they'll actually do anything about it.

ohreallyIsee · 15/05/2025 23:43

bees+wasps, I have a phobia of them so cannot enjoy the garden as much as I would like😟

Elderflower14 · 16/05/2025 02:49

Sweaty boobs and bras!

StarlightLady · 16/05/2025 06:12

Men’s smelly armpits on public transport. Even some on the way to work.

SendBooksAndTea · 13/05/2025 17:43

Men walking the street topless. It really never gets so hot here that a t-shirt is going to kill you.

Yes. Usually they don't have anything nice about them either.

Daftypants · 18/05/2025 10:03

I do think this the weather is lovely , however , some places are NOT set up for warm weather at all !
For example some of the lovely cafes we would usually head to haven’t got canopies to shade the outdoor seating area or haven’t bothered to get them repaired so the sun streams in and anyone sat there is in full sun ☀️!
That’s all that’s needed to be honest where I am , AC not necessary in that instance, I just wish some of the older buildings had kept their canopies .
Our back garden is also fully south facing and we are still establishing a garden so no decent size trees as yet for shade .
We have built a pergola right next to the back of the house and rigged up a shade with a pulley system so the back of our house doesn’t get too hot .
I also have to keep getting our dog back indoors or he would overheat , he seems to want to lie in sun till he’s panting heavily and then he will come in and throw himself dramatically on the kitchen floor FGS 🙄.
Also for some reason buses around here are too hot 🥵 don’t know why the newer ones don’t have AC or if they do have it ,then the driver isn’t using it ☹️
Weirdly the nights are still chilly so I’m heading to bed under warm bedding 😂

Sorbetto · 18/05/2025 10:12

I have such bad varicose veins that looking down at my pale legs from above I just think of cold lumpy porridge. so I’m in trousers or ankle length dresses all summer and it’s sweaty as heck

polarsystem · 15/05/2025 08:09

Sweaty under boob 🤣

Take two cotton hankies (real cotton, not tissues), lay them out, one on top of the other, fold into thirds, and arrange under the underwire of your bra. Easy to change as often as needed, can be machine washed and they dry very quickly. Goodbye sweaty underboobs!

So trying that!

FridgeJenga · 19/05/2025 06:42

Has anyone tried using antiperspirant to combat sweaty under boobs?
I have a pair of 🍳🍳 so don’t have that issue to contend with 😁

Just to be clear, I’m all for the lovely weather, it’s just the accompanying annoyances that comes with it - bastarding bitey insects being top of the list.

OP posts:
Seamond · 19/05/2025 07:54

I also don't like the biting insects, I wear long trousers and long sleeves because of BCCs and Actinic Keratosis that blight me (probably from loads of sunbathing in the 80s) so they generally target DH in his shorts and t shirt if he is with me. I like the hot weather though despite this.

NattyTurtle59 · 19/05/2025 08:01

Honestly, reading some of the posts on this, and the numerous other summer threads we always see on MN, anyone would think Britain is the hottest part of the world!

InMySpareTime · 19/05/2025 08:51

@NattyTurtle59 the issue is not the actual temperature, it’s the unpredictability. Being a temperate island we’re not set up for heat (or snow). Carpeted floors are great in a “typical” spring but awful in the heat. We have good drainage for the times it rains (which it typically does) but that means everything gets dried out and dusty after a week without rain.
Countries with more predictable heat have aircon everywhere and shaded public areas, but that would be a waste of resources here for most of the year.
British heatwaves are uncomfortable because the infrastructure is not set up to alleviate the discomfort.

Arraminta · 19/05/2025 10:20

I hate it more every year. This year I hoped it might be different as I'm 3 stones lighter and very slim thanks to WLI. I assumed I'd be merrily frolicking about in ditsy little dresses and sandals. A veritable sun worshipping pixie, no less.

Nope, I still fucking hate it. My hair has acquired a Donald Trump wave-over thanks to the humidity. My new sandals have given me so many blisters that I look like I have Trench Foot. There isn't a sun screen on the market that I can tolerate on my skin. Bastardy flies are zooming in squadron formations around the house all day.

RampantIvy · 19/05/2025 10:24

We haven't had the humidity this year (yet).

It has been a dry warmth. We had one day at 26 degrees, but it has been warm or very warm so far this year, not hot.

Toooldforthisbollocks · 19/05/2025 10:42

Those who don’t like flies and wasps indoors, get fly screens. I have them and they are great.
Also good for those with indoor cats / cats who have catios as windows can be open but cats kept safe.

I have those! I wear long, loose-fitting kaftan dresses which are lovely and airy so I don’t worry about wearing shorts ( and I’d feel uncomfortable for other reasons)

Those who say summer weather is only for a short time - doesn’t that depend on where you live? The East coast at the moment will have a different climate to the SW. I’m in the SE and it already feels endless and it’s only May

Im grateful for the cool mornings and nights and low humidity atm

Verv · 19/05/2025 13:44

Im in scotland and the weather for the past month has been glorious, and more to the point, at the maximum temp i can take without hating it.

When it gets to 28-30 degrees i am just miserable. I swell up which gives me sore calves, feet, and hands, and i hate feeling sticky and airless.

Devastated999 · 19/05/2025 13:48

WhatNoRaisins · 13/05/2025 17:50

I hate how sweaty I get and I hate how sunscreen feels when I put it on. I'll also admit that I don't really know how to dress well for warmer weather.

This is me too! I have that every summer arrives and I am still fat, therefore a red sweaty, frizzy haired mess. I am too big to wear floaty white clothes as they make me look even bigger. I hate it.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 19/05/2025 15:32

I’m in agony with heat related knee bursitis.
I’m googling surgery which I would willingly have

Britain is not the only place in the world where floors generally have carpet - and I've never found it to be an issue in summer. Air con is probably more prevalent here, especially in businesses, but lots of people don't have it in their homes and those of us who have been around a while worked in places with none for years. Shock, horror, some places actually have drought conditions most summers - and I've never seen shaded public areas. The level of moaning on here is nothing short of ridiculous.

NattyTurtle59 · 19/05/2025 22:00

On the flip side, we don't have central heating here and most of us live in houses with single glazing. We generally heat the living area and the rest of the house is like an ice box. However, other than the occasional "I hate winter/summer" people just get on with it instead of turning into delicate flowers.
