Worst aspects of hot weather

For me it’s
-Wasps, flies in the house, and bastardy bitey bugs.
Spent yesterday evening in the garden watering the veggies and I got bitten in 6 different places.

It isn't hot here.

Worst aspects of hot weather
amooseymoomum · 15/05/2025 10:01

I have an almost phobia of sun and try to avoid being in it as much as possible. I have had sunstroke twice the first coming just after a bad case of German measles I had been encouraged to go outside and get some sun obviously too much.

missdeamenor · 15/05/2025 10:04

For me it's flies. My supermarket feels like a freezer and the hot weather makes people hot tempered.

Tulipsontoast · 15/05/2025 10:11

My gym doesn’t have air con so it’s unbearable and quite dangerous imo in the summer!

Apart from that I love the heat.

Having to go to work & not being able to enjoy the Sun Shine …

Ditto, we are barbecuing (Friday eve, Sat eve and Sunday lunchtime, just for us) and no, it won't annoy neighbours because they are not close enough, and no, we aren't near any of their washing lines.

I am loving this good spell of weather, it actually makes me happy and re-invigorated.

Why are people complaining about the heat when I am in one of the southerly hotspots in the UK today and it's still only 20. Tomorrow 22, can't wait.

We always have our BBQ on the side where we don't have neighbours so no smoke to annoy anyone and its only for us and we are quiet and respectful of our neighbours. We don't have loads of people round to join in and have a party or anything (not that there is anything wrong with that anyway)

But we are enjoying every second of our early morning and late afternoon dog walks in the warm weather and our weekends relaxing in our garden with a cold drink and a BBQ.

I just love it and it makes me feel so much more relaxed and happy when the sun is shining. 😊

People whining when it gets over 22 degrees.

This. ^ Bit lame isn't it? Temperature is barely in the 20s and people are carping and moaning.

Honestly, some people just moan for nothing. The weather is GORGEOUS. Perfect temperature. Beautiful. Yet people are like 'waaaah it's too hot, and flies... and wasps.. and bees. WAHHHH!' 😩

Seriously, get a grip! 😂

the80sweregreat · 15/05/2025 10:54

I’m the first to whine when it’s too hot etc, but where I am in the south east , we need rain , desperately!
I find this worrying , although nothing I can do about it of course.

PuddleintheOcean · 15/05/2025 10:57

The bit I hate is having to go through a hot summer with small children. I worry about the baby being out in it, I'm never sure what to dress him in as if we are outside he's in the shade where it can be a bit cold, the toddler won't keep a hat on, he hates wearing shorts, getting him to drink plenty is a slog, and then there's the whole suncream battle everyday. Plus being told they should be kept out of the sun between 11 and 3pm.
So I feel sunny days are wasted as often it's just easier to stay inside or a shaded corner of the garden. I live by the coast. I had visions of endless days at the beach with them. I just find the sun so stressful 😔

Tortielady · 15/05/2025 11:07

I don't like summer much - sticky nights, in-yer-face flies and wasps, pollen, (my DH came home last night full of it, in spite of hay fever meds) and the way some people think the rest of us want to hear their car stereos etc. But whatever my conscious brain thinks of summer, my subconscious likes it. I'm doing my PhD and the longer days and ample sunlight are pushing me on in a way that chilly autumn fog never does.

The fact that everyone's energy levels run high and there is just some kind of weird tension in the air. People's behaviour changes when it's hot. From giddy children to exasperated adults it all just feels a bit too much. I can't wait for it to lash it down and calm everything down a bit.

This is a good description, like everyones on edge. People in hotter countries are usually quicker to anger and carnage so makes sense.

Mine are:
loud people in gardens
dirt bikes and quads tearing around
sun pouring in the window highlighting all the dust and flaws
More cyclists on roads
the light lasting too long into the evening

love everything else though!

That’s terrible

RampantIvy · 15/05/2025 13:23

Just been out to hang washing out.

It is a chilly 13 degrees with a cold wind today.

MellowOliveBee · 15/05/2025 14:06

It's already been too hot on three separate occasions to take the dog to school pick up, it's only May! He sulks, full blown sulks.

Whereabouts are you that it’s so chilly? It’s been between 18 and 26 all week here!

South Yorkshire on the edge of the Pennines. I was in shorts on Monday and Tuesday, then the temperatures dropped Tuesday evening.

Purplecatshopaholic · 15/05/2025 15:28

People moaning about it when I love it, lol. At a push I guess I don’t like getting into my car when it’s hot but it soon cools down and is a small price to pay.

Catnapsallday · 13/05/2025 23:45

Humidity.
Blasted intense relentless oppressive humidity.
Without the humidity the hot sun would be wonderful because you can get away from it when you go indoors which you cannot do when it is humid.
Thankfully we have AC but the thing I don't like about the summer is that it's almost as bad as the winter as we keep the blinds down, the curtains drawn, the windows shut all in an attempt to keep the heat out and instead of outdoor noises and bird calls, all we can hear is the AC droning on.

Yes to this.

Heat is fine. Humidity is horrible, and makes sleeping almost impossible. Thank goodness for AC.

RampantIvy · 15/05/2025 15:53

It has been a very dry heat recently though. Humidity levels were pretty low on my weather app.

Men walking the street topless. It really never gets so hot here that a t-shirt is going to kill you.

A gentleman should only remove his shirt at the pool or on the beach.

CrystalSingerFan · 15/05/2025 17:38

Swerving most of the above, I'm in the process of moving. My new house has a tiny garden which will have to be pots. I can't pot anything up in this weather as the moment I wander off to catsit, holiday, visit friends, etc. I won't be here to water them. So everything will promptly die... And then probably a hosepipe ban...

Will no-one think of the patio pot plants?

JohnTheRevelator · 15/05/2025 17:54

So many things! Constantly sweating is the worst one. Despite losing a substantial amount of weight over the last few years,I still seem to break out in a sweat the moment the temperature goes above 24 degrees C. Poxy bastard house flies. Struggling to sleep at night. Feeling sorry for my poor cat because she can't take her fur coat off. Not being comfortable wearing a long cardigan to cover up my saggy bum or bingo wings. Cunty behaviour from a certain sizable proportion of the population who think warm weather means non-stop barbecues and music blaring from their cars. Up until a few years ago,I would have also said being feasted on by mosquitoes, but for some reason, they don't seem interested in me any more. Must be my age! Men walking around toplesss with their beer guts on display. Shops with no air con that I swear still have the heating on when it's 26 degrees outside I'm looking at you Boots Hot sticky buses with no air con and people persisting in slamming the windows shut because they still feel cold when it's 30 degrees wear more bloody clothes then
The only positive things I can think about with hot weather is that I'm not spending a fortune on gas for the central heating, and it doesn't take me 20 minutes to get dressed and undressed with all the layers necessary in cold weather. I have osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis AND a frozen shoulder and struggle to get dressed and undressed at the best of times without having to negotiate 3 jumpers,2 pairs of leggings and 2 pairs of socks!

RampantIvy · 15/05/2025 21:09

Not being comfortable wearing a long cardigan to cover up my saggy bum or bingo wings.

Oversized shirts are very in at the moment and much more comfortable and cooler than a cardigan.

Please don't make yourself a martyr to your insecurities when there is an excellent solution.

All the shops where I live have arctic aircon all year round.

I think the worst is dehydration. It is not always recognisable. By the time some people become severely dehydrated their brain is unable to tell them to take some water.

It is one of the most dangerous conditions of hot weather, because although sunstroke is obvious and can be treated, being dehydrated when someone is vulnerable and living alone is a killer.

If you know disabled and elderly people who are at risk, check on them regularly. To test for dehydration, gently pinch the skin. If the fold stays up, then the person is becoming seriously dehydrated, and needs water.

With the opposite - fluid retention, you can test this by pressing your thumb into the swelling. If the thumb print stays, the person has fluid retention.
