Serving crisps with sandwiches? Do you?

I moved to the UK 20yrs ago. PIL always put crisps on the side of the plate if having a sandwich there. I assumed it was just a thing they did. In a cafe recently, they did the same.

Not a packet of crisps such as in a meal deal, but just loose on the side of the plate. We are in the SE. Is this commonly done in the UK?

100%

Yes! I’ve seen it done in cafes and always do it at home. The last time I was served crisps with a sandwich myself and a friend were sat outside on a windy day. The crisps did not survive the journey from the cafe door to the table!

MoveYourSelfDearie · 13/05/2025 09:19

Only in the posh places

ImFineItsAllFine · 13/05/2025 09:21

I've not seen it so much recently, but yes definitely pretty standard growing up. Nowadays still common for a pub lunch.

Favouritefruits · 13/05/2025 09:21

Definitely! A sandwich on a plate looks a bit lost add a few crisps and a garnish it transforms it into something that looks more appealing

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 13/05/2025 09:22

Most pubs/cafes offer crisps with sandwiches, but the really good ones offer chips

verycloakanddaggers · 13/05/2025 09:24

Yes very common for people to do this.

TheMasterplan23 · 13/05/2025 09:24

I couldn’t imagine having a lone sandwich on a plate without a few crisps next to it….

FoFanta · 13/05/2025 09:25

Oh yes, a little crescent of crisps is essential

Illyna · 13/05/2025 09:29

Yes! I love crisps. I'd had a side of sandwich with a plate of crisps if I could.

Just going to make my self comfortable before the holier than thou evangelical UPF lot come along to tell us crisp eaters what damage we're doing to our bodies.

Abra1t · 13/05/2025 09:30

No. Stodge on stodge. Don’t like chips with sandwiches either. Like all elements separately.

Ygfrhj · 13/05/2025 09:32

I think it's just to fill up the plate and make it look like you're getting more than just a sad lonely sandwich.

If I have people over and do sandwiches I'll add some salad leaves and a few crisps to pretty it up.

WitchesofPainswick · 13/05/2025 09:32

The crunchiness offsets the sandwichy squidge. It's a heavenly marriage.

BethDuttonYeHaw · 13/05/2025 09:32

Often done in cafes although I don’t do it at home.

SummertimeFeelingFine · 13/05/2025 09:34

Yes.

I don't do it often (we try not to have crisps all the time) but it's absolutely essential to me for a picnic, otherwise it just isn't right.

LittleGreenDragons · 13/05/2025 09:34

Try going one further and having an actual crisp sandwich! Best with smokey bacon flavour or my favourite - primula cheese spread and wotsits. Yum!

My DM and stbx both did sandwiches with crisps next to them but I don't even buy them with a meal deal.

pimplebum · 13/05/2025 09:34

Yum yes pub sandwiches
My posh cafe give me a blob of coleslaw on their toastie best meal ever!

BruisedNeckMeat · 13/05/2025 09:34

Always.

OudAndRose · 13/05/2025 09:35

Yes but I personally hate it. Crisps turn a sandwich lunch into a plate of stodge. I prefer a salad or crudités because I don't do well with lots of starch (not claiming the high ground, I would happily follow it up with tonnes of sugar). Everyone else in the UK firmly disagrees - hence it is a common thing.

2JFDIYOLO · 13/05/2025 09:36

Yummmmmmmm. And putting the crisps inside the sandwich ... Oooh.

I once went for a pub lunch with a colleague. She couldn't decide what to have so she ordered a jacket potato with beans and a portion of chips. Years later, my mind is still blown 🤯 In fairness I've seen a roast served with both mash and roast potatoes and not thought much of it so why the jacket potato and chips combo shocked me I don't really know 😂

EsmaCannonball · 13/05/2025 09:36

It was the done thing in pubs and cafés back in the 70s, 80s and early 90s. I would be quite happy if crisps in or adjacent to sandwiches be made compulsory.

amooseymoomum · 13/05/2025 09:40

Yes I find it means I can have a taste of crisps but not the same calories as a whole bag. a big bag such as Tyrrells can be made to last a week seal the top after with a clip

purplecorkheart · 13/05/2025 09:43

Nearly always a side of crisps served with sandwiches here. I like them as long as they are not salt and vinegar.

I rarely do it at home unless we have an open sharing bag. I would not open a packet to serve with a sandwich.

Yes, I always want salad with my sandwiches. I I don’t get the arbitrary addition of a few crisps at all — it seems like an odd addition to me. It codes as very old-fashioned to me these days, like putting a doily under your cheese bap. I can’t remember when I last saw it.
