Serving crisps with sandwiches? Do you?

I moved to the UK 20yrs ago. PIL always put crisps on the side of the plate if having a sandwich there. I assumed it was just a thing they did. In a cafe recently, they did the same.

Not a packet of crisps such as in a meal deal, but just loose on the side of the plate. We are in the SE. Is this commonly done in the UK?

We had a bbq at the weekend. Bread buns, potato salad and couscous @eqpi4t2hbsnktd
Triple carbs 👊

BangersAndGnash · 13/05/2025 14:10

I have always lived in England and crisis on a sandwich plate is not a familiar thing for me.

A pub might, but at home?

Do you have the whole packet? In which case why empty it out?

SummertimeFeelingFine · 13/05/2025 14:11

Crisis on a sandwich plate sounds like the most British thing ever. 😆

ladymalfoy45 · 13/05/2025 14:18

I'm hankering for a ham or beef sandwich with crisps now.
Obviously with enough mustard or horseradish to make me sneeze.

MounjaroMounjaro · 13/05/2025 14:34

It's the law over here, OP.

I’ve always found it an odd thing to do, probably because I’m not keen on a few damp, stale crisps, especially if they’re flavoured. My oh loves it and puts the crisps in his sandwich. Even if I’m making a sandwich he’ll try and find a few c rises to add. The carbohydrate overload just doesn’t appeal to me. It’s as bad as the m &s mac and cheese sandwich. I’d rather starve.

The mac and cheese what now???? 😳

Could be the title of a Pam Ayres poem

SummertimeFeelingFine · 13/05/2025 14:59

It so could! Heh.

Mac and cheese sandwich - ideally served toasted - tastes incredible!

dizzydizzydizzy · 13/05/2025 16:01

I would say it's common but not something I usually do on health grounds.

BrilliantineStickInsect · 13/05/2025 16:44

It’s just wrong to me if I have a sandwich or toastie in a cafe and they don’t serve crisps with it! (I also want a nicely dressed side salad and some creamy coleslaw to boot 😂).
A cafe where I used to live served delicious burgers…with a side of crisps 🤣 (they didn’t do chips). Now that I drew the line at!

verycloakanddaggers · 13/05/2025 14:01

It's really common, not 'madness'.
Pie and chips, burger (in bun) and chips, pizza and garlic bread, lasgne and potatoes, chip butty - you have surely seen all these?

Pub menus have been full of these double carb options since forever.

I can see chips and burger but lasagne and potato?

I’ve seen it served with chips and garlic bread … triple carbing!

The crunchiness offsets the sandwichy squidge. It's a heavenly marriage.

Yes. It's the contrast in texture. I don't do it at home but I like it when I'm out.

Ooh, lasagne and chips is an elite combo!

Newbie8918 · 13/05/2025 17:15

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 13/05/2025 13:11

But they are both a main carb thing! That's like chips with pasta. Or a garlic bread and jacket. Madness.

You mean like a hamburger and fries? 🤣

I once had Mac and cheese pizza in America!

TatteredAndTorn · 13/05/2025 17:18

IN sandwiches is better 😬

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 13/05/2025 17:20

Never in any private home I've been to, but usually in pubs etc.

MferMonsterSearchingForRedemption · 13/05/2025 17:25

I rarely eat crisps, I don't really enjoy them. However, ready salted crisps are vital with a cheese sandwich. Doritos with Camembert are nice too.

Edenmum2 · 13/05/2025 17:31

In cafes yes always
