Serving crisps with sandwiches? Do you?

I moved to the UK 20yrs ago. PIL always put crisps on the side of the plate if having a sandwich there. I assumed it was just a thing they did. In a cafe recently, they did the same.

Not a packet of crisps such as in a meal deal, but just loose on the side of the plate. We are in the SE. Is this commonly done in the UK?

I’ve never served sandwiches with crisps at home. The only places I’ve seen this is in pretentious upmarket cafes in very rural locations.
I don’t tend to order sandwiches when out, so it may be more common than I’ve experienced.

Yes

Usually put a few on a plate. Like an earlier poster said about Morrisons. That was the perfect measure.

HappyChilli · 13/05/2025 22:43

It’s such an English thing, we really noticed when we moved to the UK. Now we are abroad again, we still do it, love a bit of crunch on the side of my sandwich 😆

A sandwich needs a contrast - a handful of crisps or tortilla chips, and/or a scoop of coleslaw or Waldorf salad or carrot salad. Green leaves usually aren’t crunchy enough.

Chips with a cold sandwich are wrong.

Grated cheese sandwich with the hot chips inside (melting it), with a squeeze of salad cream. Try it Smile

Haha. And Morrisons.

Slightly off topic but have you ever had a crisp sandwich @JDM625?
There has been a thread or two I think on the delights of a crisp sandwich.
Tayto crisps ( an Irish brand ) nestled between 2 slices of sliced pan with a smidge of butter.
Utterly delicious.

Renabrook · 14/05/2025 08:07

No but my ils do and I am finding them very sensible people

Seagullsandsausagerolls · 14/05/2025 08:08

Come to Northern Ireland we have them AS sandwiches 😂

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 14/05/2025 08:14

I wouldn't ever do it at home, but it's very common in cafés etc.

Davros · 14/05/2025 08:38

My top lunch is fresh small baguette, lashings of real butter filled with walkers roast chicken crisps. Crush it down, guzzle a big mug of tea 👏

ApolloandDaphne · 14/05/2025 09:34

Round these parts (east Scotland) you get crisps and side salad with a sandwich. Coleslaw too if you are really lucky.

I can see chips and burger but lasagne and potato?

Yes definitely, especially in places where 'veg lasagne' was the only alternative to the Sunday roast!

Italian restaurants used to serve rosemary potatoes as a side for pizza or pasta.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 14/05/2025 10:33

No never.

Scottsy200 · 14/05/2025 14:22

Yep can’t have sandwiches without crisps
