Serving crisps with sandwiches? Do you?

I moved to the UK 20yrs ago. PIL always put crisps on the side of the plate if having a sandwich there. I assumed it was just a thing they did. In a cafe recently, they did the same.

Not a packet of crisps such as in a meal deal, but just loose on the side of the plate. We are in the SE. Is this commonly done in the UK?

I once had Mac and cheese pizza in America!

Reminds me of the cheeseburger pizzas they do (or used to do?) in Pizza Hut lol.

I like salt and vinegar crisps sandwiched between the tuna and cucumber. The crunch is essential you see.

Kazzybingbong · 13/05/2025 17:35

I refuse to eat a sandwich without crisps. I put them on my plate for easy access. Sometimes I’ll splice the bag if I’m feeling crazy.

poetryandwine · 13/05/2025 17:40

A sandwich needs a contrast - a handful of crisps or tortilla chips, and/or a scoop of coleslaw or Waldorf salad or carrot salad. Green leaves usually aren’t crunchy enough.

Chips with a cold sandwich are wrong.

SummertimeFeelingFine · 13/05/2025 17:42

DH got me onto lasagne, chips and coleslaw. I was very dubious indeed but I like it.

MadameWombat · 13/05/2025 17:43

We are a sandwich and crisps household. When I worked at Morrisons as a young adult we used to get yesterday's left over cafe sandwiches in the staff canteen and they always came on a disposable tray with a small bit of salad and a portion of crisps. I will never eat mine any different now.

GingerPaste · 13/05/2025 17:53

It’s a yes here. I love a sandwich and crisps!

VictoriaEra2 · 13/05/2025 18:17

Always. It’s the best part.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 13/05/2025 18:17

Cafes round where I live all do it. It’s a holiday area and I think once one of them started the others felt they had to. I think it’s the less fancy places, though.

abnerbrownsdressinggown · 13/05/2025 18:22

A yes here as well. It adds a bit of crunch and salt to my sandwich.

I always eat mine with the sandwich, whereas DH will have (small) packet of crisps after his.

Needsomezzzz · 13/05/2025 18:28

Yes this is essential, then the crisps go into the sandwich.

JohnTheRevelator · 13/05/2025 18:29

Of course. But I'm fully expecting to see many posters on here saying that this is excessive. I remember going in Subway a few years ago and having a packet of crisps with my tuna sub. 2 women at the next table started exchanging looks and whispering about it being greedy.

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 13/05/2025 18:30

In cafes. Not at home.

JDM625 · 13/05/2025 18:49

Thanks everyone. I didn't expect to come home to SO many replies! I never realised it was popular, although mainly in pubs and some have said more common 20yrs ago.

For those that do serve them as a side at home, do you have an open packet available, use a single serve pack and empty on the plate or something else?

I usually do a single serve pack. But it depends - if we happen to have a sharing pack in then I'll use some of that.

And in answer to pp's question about why I decant onto the plate, I just think it looks and feels nicer than eating straight out of the bag.

We also have a selection of good looking little bowls that I serve snacks in, because it just feels nicer.

Devilmentpleassure · 13/05/2025 19:14

I love crisps with a sandwich but only as a treat.

We just have ours with a bag of crisps each that we scatter with delight on our plates at the side of our sandwich! Every single time we have a sandwich! Like a meal deal, but home made!

pilates · 13/05/2025 19:31

Yes empty a bag on plate with sandwich.

PurpleChrayn · 13/05/2025 19:34

One of life’s great pleasures for me is an egg mayo butty with a packet of salt and vinegar crisps on the side.

deeahgwitch · 13/05/2025 19:38

I go to a cafe regularly and if you order a toasted sandwich you get crisps but if you order a salad sandwich or any untoasted sandwich, you don’t 🤷‍♀️

I wonder what would happen if you ordered a toasted sandwich and asked for it not to be toasted??

whynotmereally · 13/05/2025 20:13

Yes always at home. Either a whole pack or split a pack between two if there’s two of us having sand witches

GRCP · 13/05/2025 20:17

Definitely

Either one crisp packet for two plates of sandwiches, or two packets for three plates (if I'm just making one sandwich for myself I'd probably just eat it there without plating it up with other things).

fruitpastille · 13/05/2025 21:28

Sandwiches just taste much more delicious eaten with a few salty crisps. I don't enjoy them nearly as much without. And I don't feel bloated or find it stodgy. It's only an extra 60 calories or so if you share a bag.
