Serving crisps with sandwiches? Do you?

I moved to the UK 20yrs ago. PIL always put crisps on the side of the plate if having a sandwich there. I assumed it was just a thing they did. In a cafe recently, they did the same.

Not a packet of crisps such as in a meal deal, but just loose on the side of the plate. We are in the SE. Is this commonly done in the UK?

We don't keep crisps in the house as I'd just eat them all and sandwiches tend to be a spur of the moment thing so not usually but I do love a crisp sandwich and always have crisps if I have a meal deal, I always enjoy them together in pubs and cafes.

Only in the posh places

Morrisons cafes, pre vamp of the menu, used to do plates of sandwiches with crisps on the side.

Imo, most sandwiches are improved by crisps inside to give a nice crunch!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 13/05/2025 10:52

I first experienced this in the US many years ago, I saw it on a menu and I must admit I was expecting 'fried chips'. A bit disappointed to receive a packet of crisps with my sandwich...

DappledThings · 13/05/2025 10:57

Completely standard in a cafe or pub. Would never do it at home though.

TellySavalashairbrush · 13/05/2025 10:59

Yes, its very popular. I don't like crisps though so its wasted on me.

radishgate · 13/05/2025 11:02

Absolutely! I love a stodge plate. I shove them in my sandwich for some extra salty crunch!

Soluckyinlove · 13/05/2025 11:02

My husband would rather have a handful of prawn crackers than crisps with a sandwich, or salad, or even with a dip.

stayathomer · 13/05/2025 11:03

Out, yes, in someone’s house have never been offered crisps with a sandwich (though I’d be happy if they did!!)

BertieBotts · 13/05/2025 11:10

For a cold sandwich, yes. I am eating a bacon and egg sandwich and no crisps with it.

I think it's because the bread that we usually use for sandwiches is a bit bland so it makes it feel like more of a meal. I would usually do some other stuff on the side too, like some crackers and hummus or potato salad or cut up cucumber/peppers/tomatoes.

In other countries they tend to serve sandwiches in something like a baguette or a crusty type of roll, or some nice granary or sourdough or whatever rather than that square loaf bread. Though I have to say, I do really miss the UK square loaves. The square bread they sell in other countries is very strange and not quite like it at all.

Chips with a sandwich?

Of course - delicious! Our local does amazing baguettes with chips on the side…mmm!

Northumberlandgirl · 13/05/2025 11:39

I’ve always found it an odd thing to do, probably because I’m not keen on a few damp, stale crisps, especially if they’re flavoured. My oh loves it and puts the crisps in his sandwich. Even if I’m making a sandwich he’ll try and find a few c rises to add. The carbohydrate overload just doesn’t appeal to me. It’s as bad as the m &s mac and cheese sandwich. I’d rather starve.

CoffeecakeSuncream · 13/05/2025 11:41

Not every time, but it is a guilty rare pleasure. The only way to do it is to slip a couple of crisps in the side of your sandwich and crunch away, soooo good! I used to do it when I was pregnant. They are fine in the bag though, doesn't matter to me.
Of course on MN, people will not contemplate eating a crisp, and god forbid as part of a lunch, it will be a travesty here. 😂 Maybe you'll get away with it if you hand make them from the finest of potatoes, and hand cook them yourself!

You think we don't have baguettes, rolls, ciabatta etc here? How odd! Were you last in the UK in 1972? 😂

Topseyt123 · 13/05/2025 11:48

I used to love crisp or chip butties as a child. I haven't had one in ages so might fancy it again one of these days. 😃😃😃

Oh, and a fish finger sandwich, in a nice freshly baked crusty bread roll from the local bakery. With a good dollop of tartar sauce for good measure. The fish fingers must be fried too, not grilled.

ForAzureSeal · 13/05/2025 11:51

My joy if I order a toastie and it comes with a little side salad (extra points for cress on top) and some crisps - is unmatched.

UseNailOil · 13/05/2025 11:53

This is such a John Lewis cafe vibe

Oh yes, a little crescent of crisps is essential

Absolutely

gingercat02 · 13/05/2025 11:56

I'm not sure I have served sandwiches to anyone outside my immediate family but I love a sandwich and a bag of crisps.

Moier · 13/05/2025 11:58

I do... if a cold sandwich.. ( not hot like bacon or sausage) . Yesterday l had patè on baguette with sliced tomatoes on top and crisps on the side.
A ham salad sandwich isn't the same without crisps lol.

Iggii · 13/05/2025 11:58

Always

BobbyBiscuits · 13/05/2025 12:01

I've seen it in pubs/cafes but not in someone's house. I guess it's an extension of the typical British lunch, the supermarket meal deal. So crisps and sandwiches do often go hand in hand.
I would prefer real chips if it was from a cafe though!

And a side clump of cress!

No. I didn't say they don't exist. I said it is less common to make sandwiches out of those things, especially at home.

That doesn't mean nobody ever does it, just that it's less common.

I associate crisps-on-the-side with a white, square bread sandwich, anyway.

pizzaHeart · 13/05/2025 12:03

Abra1t · 13/05/2025 09:30

No. Stodge on stodge. Don’t like chips with sandwiches either. Like all elements separately.

Agree with this^ 100%
salad is much more appropriate but of course crisps are cheaper and simpler

AmazingBouncingFerret · 13/05/2025 12:03

I’ve literally just sat down to my lunch break of a ham sandwich with a few little crisps on the side! Colleagues laugh at me because I refuse to bring in a whole bag when only a couple will do. Nice added crunch to go with the soft bread of the sandwich.
