Thank you. It’s really not nice if people are gloating.

Sadly it’s the way of politics these days. And it starts with those at the top of Labour.

It’s no wonder it filters through to SM. Even when dc are involved, or maybe that’s a bonus

Upstartled · 13/06/2025 14:34

I think once you build an identity about being the kindest political voters, it's only a hair's breath away from giving yourself license to be a complete dick to people who disagree with you. You see that a lot on MN and out in the wild 'progressive liberalism', where anything less than conformity is the target for venom.

I'm sorry it's been a rough day for those with their fingers crossed that some pragmatic sense would kick in with regards to VAT on private school and particularly those with children wedged between poor state Sen provision and impossibly expensive fees. Bad enough without the gloaters out in force.

EasternStandard · 13/06/2025 14:37

I can see the backlash seeing them out. It may feel good in the moment to have a good old spite go but people connect Labour with nastiness.

Honestly, I don't know. You'd think that there would be but picking out small sections in society for tax jackpots and cut windfalls seems to be working. It might change in the Autumn when tax rises kick in before there's another decline in Labour support.

EasternStandard · 13/06/2025 14:47

It’s such a big drop though since the GE. Obviously you’ll get Labour loyals who bat for them no matter what, even when policy impacts them.

If they called a GE today they’d plummet. I don’t think any party has lost support so quickly.

Upstartled · 13/06/2025 15:00

Yes, you're right. I suppose what we might see is Starmer and other cabinet minister's favourability ratings continue to plunge even while the Labour faithful remains fairly stable in terms of voting intention right now. And it will be through that polling where we'll see strength of opinion, maybe? Idk - it's the best guess of a rank amateur.

EasternStandard · 13/06/2025 15:02

I do hope they lose more support though as you say. There was chat on what happens to Reeves if tax rises come in on the radio earlier. And how implicated Starmer would be.

TheNuthatch · 13/06/2025 18:34

I'm very grateful for our little thread today.

When this side of politics shows empathy for parents and SEN dc, and the other side chooses laughing emojis, I know I'm on the right side.

Exactly.

At the risk of being a negative Nancy, and full disclosure I sometimes can be, in case the Iranian threats to close the route of Hormuz isn't just hot air, it might be an idea to fix your energy prices today for over winter before the energy companies can scramble over the weekend.

Good idea, thank you. Although if energy gets any more expensive, we'll be buying a firepit and some candles 😂.
We filled both our cars up today too as the oil price has shot up.

Upstartled · 14/06/2025 17:24

Yes, I saw that, Brent oil has a barrel at over seventy dollars. Even posturing and low level disruptions and detours could make that go higher. It's just an idea because the current fixed deals are pretty good relative to the cap prices at the moment and so there's not much penalty to insure yourself against fluctuations right now.

Upstartled · 14/06/2025 17:31

Oh man, I think our life insurance would have to go up if we were stuck with firepits and candles. My lot are so clumsy and accident prone that you can usually guarantee that at any point one of them will be sporting a broken toe or a mega-bruise. I think we'd have to switch out the naked flames for oodies and hot water bottles. 😅

Your household sounds very similar to mine 😂

Oh good. Let's hope it's done with the depth and the scope that those poor victims deserve. I hope those who sat on their hands and watched the travesty play out are hauled across the coals.

Have they said what kind of funding they have earmarked for it? Honestly, if they do this properly, with compelled documentation and testimony under oath, without all the minimisation and delays tactics, this could mark a step forward between the public and institutions more generally - beyond party politics. A big thank you to Baroness Casey.

God, I hope they cover everywhere.

@Upstartled yes 💯

The latest trial earlier this week.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cdd2rld9mj2o.amp

I didn’t realise cases were current.

Starmer has dragged on this, I wonder why he’s changed now.

Upstartled · 14/06/2025 18:46

An article in the Times (back earlier in the year) said that there were 40 ongoing cases spanning from the Stovewood investigation in Rotherham alone, it'll include these bastards but there are more already in the pipeline.

TheNuthatch · 14/06/2025 20:32

I'm so pleased. Cooper is giving a statement on Monday, hopefully there will be more details then. I just hope it's done properly. This scab needs ripping off.

I watch with a cynics hat on
Why has he u turned again ? After his latest tweet marking the firm but fair vat on PS going to housing instead of 6500 extra teachers which has since been deleted one wonders if his entire pr team should be sacked

Upstartled · 15/06/2025 10:01

I'll be waiting for an apology after Starmer framed the demand for a national grooming gangs inquiry as far right adjacent. Or from Powell who reduced the concern to a dog whistle now that the government agrees that it is a necessity.

This was such an aggressive and bad-faith portrayal of a significant portion of the population. 76% of the population according to YouGov.

EasternStandard · 15/06/2025 10:12

Exactly it’s the abuse from Labour before they u turn.

I can’t believe anyone trusts them anymore.
