I read some good analysis on the Telegraph app, I was interested in the £9bn claim and the timescale for that.

I think it’s a real divider. Some will be happy, some will be angry. Where it falls with votes I guess we’ll see.

I read Daisy Cooper say it was disappointing. Estimates It will be 0.2% on GDP by 2040.

that's right @TheNuthatch they were crying out for drivers. My brother took his HGV test and changed his career as they were in demand after Brexit and I know people say just give me one benefit of Brexit and my brother is a classic example of a benefit. It changed his life and he earns more than me now. Well let's see what happens because for all those cheering today, there might be some downsides.

Interesting that the standard of life in Poland is now better - maybe they will stay away and I'm whittling over nothing!

I'm not sure what difference today's news will make to my life. Cheaper food maybe at the supermarket? I've been to the EU twice this year and there was barely any queue at passport control and in the airport at my last trip, the queue was longer at the EU booth, so not something that has affected me too much.

TheNuthatch · 19/05/2025 19:43

@Liker yes, same with the e gates queues.
Cheaper food would be nice Smile

Just listening to Ben Wallace. Such a shame he didn’t want to go for the leadership job.

Is that just a vibe or definitive policies he offered ?

Most small business owners seem happy. Why not just accept this could be a positive thing and avoid the party politicking ? I mean ultimately we’re all Brits and want the best for the country. Surely that’s the whole idea of politics, wanting to see the country do well, regardless of which political ideology.

UK cheesemaker welcomes new EU deal – but says it comes four years too late

Simon Spurrell was forced to sell his business because of £600,000 loss caused by Brexit red tape

Reason and natural understanding. I wasn’t sure who it was until the end of the piece. The interviewer respected his views rather than harangued.

Not the usual script tactics Labour use every time which is off putting to many. More an informed opinion.

Out of all the options, including Labour options, I think he could have stood a stronger chance against Reform.

ETA idk his views on immigration, which is the main issue that drives Reform, so also depends on that.

EasternStandard · 20/05/2025 09:18

On the EU stuff as much as people want positive analysis only it doesn’t work like that. People who are angry, not on here so much here, will get a vote too.

TheNuthatch · 20/05/2025 09:22

I was listening to him too Eastern. Bloody love Ben Wallace. Things could have turned out very differently with him at the helm.

Agree with him about this so called 'deal' too. 'It's a mixture of waffle and concrete'. Thr concrete is what the UK has given away, the waffle is what we have received from the EU. No details on how much UK will have to pay into the defence fund. Only 0.2% increase of GDP and that's not until 2040. Even the e gates thing is a sham because EU states won't be compelled to let Brits use them. But hey, pet passports.
In return, Starmer has thrown our fishing industry under a bus, and it about to agree to freedom of movement in all but name, as the youth mobility scheme (or whatever they'll rename it as) with be for 18-30. Two thirds of eu citizens who arrived here under freedom of movement were under 35.

There seems to be lots of hyperventilating from the Labour supporters, but they would have voted Labour anyway. I love The Sun front page this morning. Done up like a kipper.

You need to understand that Tory policies haven’t really worked for 80% of the country. I’m not sure any leader of the Conservatives would have been effective in 2024. Too much baggage, too much complacency. They need a few years out to regroup, preferably without KB at the helm. Rubbish Labour all you want but they are a better alternative than Reform. I’m not a blind follower, they’ve made whopping mistakes but some things I agree with.

Again, the tories were toxic. Just changing the leader wouldn’t absolve them of 14 years poor governance. Don’t you think they needed to learn from their mistakes rather than being constantly rewarded by being blindly voted in despite their poor record ?
And bloody hell, getting your news from the Sun. Scraping the barrel.

EasternStandard · 20/05/2025 09:25

Vote for who you want. Everyone else will.

There’s plenty of criticism for Labour, as much as the focus is on this thread for some reason. The polls and commentary are all out there.

How true !

All those Labour MPs in fishing areas need to brace themselves because a voters backlash is coming.

@TheNuthatchI know. Such a shame. Actually could listen to a politician for a change.

And yes agree with his take.

PlutoCat · 20/05/2025 09:27

Sadly, it looks as though the Tories will end up with Jenrick, who is a really nasty piece of work.

And it will be thoroughly deserved after what they've done to that industry with this 'deal'.

Fair enough. Time will tell.
I’m sure you’re hoping the government will succeed. Who wants their country to fail. Weird if you do.
But well done for accepting that the Tories deserve their current fate. Very pragmatic.

And farming/rural areas
And pensioners
And anyone disabled
And anyone who chooses independent school
And now anyone with kids with SEND
And WASPI women
And.......

I don't like Jenrick either, but I'd rather vote for him than Farage. As for being a nasty piece of work, I would also put Starmer in that category.

Due to expire next year and Labour have extended it. They could have chosen not to. Same with selling off school playing fields, Labour could have ended that but they chose to extend it.

Who cares who leads the Tory party?

They're a busted flush, with only themselves to blame.

They aren't even conservative with a small "c", let alone Conservative

Jenrick is vile and makes Starmer look like a kindly uncle (and I hate some of what Starmer has done). He called Starmer that word. The one beginning with q.

A choice between Farage and Jenrick might not be on the table? Jenrick would hitch he Tories to the Reform wagon if needed, I reckon.

Kugelblitz · 20/05/2025 09:35

Erm, you’re against taxing the wealthiest of farmers and pensioners ?
WASPI women have hardly any support.
People chose to send their kids to private schools it’s a choice like any other luxury.
The reduction to benefits, I’ll wait and see, if the most needy get more, too right, but the Tories weren’t sympathetic to disabled people either. How many died because of cuts ?
Can’t believe it, Tories clamouring for higher benefits. Can’t wait til I see their election pledges for higher UC, dropping the 2 child benefit clause. Now that would be a surprise.
Fishing, well a fisherman was on the news today, saying Tory Brexit was the worst thing that could ever have happened 🤷🏻‍♂️
Thought Tory supporters were pragmatic, like hell they are, petty whingeing and simultaneously hoping that their country fails.
