Particularly when followed by

'home made, not from the supermarket'

Get over your sour selves, sick of hearing about this

*disclaimer - I dont eat bread. I have no yeast in this game.

How old are you OP out of interest?

I’d say either very old or a teen.

Mondaytuesdayhappydays · 11/05/2025 18:07

See also ‘Physilla husk’ whatever the blazes that is??
And Chai lattes. All my colleagues who claimed to be addicted circa 2022 are back on the lattes and builders tea now lol

I had it with crushed avocado & a poached egg for breakfast this morning after my gym workout. Gorgeous & no cafe tables were harmed in the eating.

It’s when the yolk seeps into the holes … 😋

But Did you have some pea shoots and pico de gallo as a flourish on top ?

I am poking my head above the parapet to say that sour dough bread with anything, and brioche buns with burgers in particular are the work of the devil...

Oh I forgot about brioche buns and burgers, you are right. Thats going on the list as well.

Nope! Not necessary imo.
Bit of coarse black pepper does the trick.

soupyspoon · 11/05/2025 18:11

Oh and pea shoots!! lol.

Nah, I don’t like it. It’s actually sour 😹 and it’s a jaw breaker. Give me a lovely fresh, white crusty loaf or roll. Or a fresh white baguette

It's awful. And I say that as a bit of a bread fanatic.

And I agree those who make it at home somehow make it their entire personality.

I think that’s what OP is getting at
Nobody actually cares what anyone else eats lol x

It’s not a fad. It’s the kind of bread everyone used to eat before processed supermarket bread was invented. I keep mine sealed in the fridge and it stays fresh for a week.

No it isn't. At least not in the UK. I'm nearly 70 and pre-supermarket most people bought their bread from the local bakers. We had cob loaves, split tin loaves, coburg loaves, cottage loaves and bloomers to name but a few. Sourdough was unheard of. It might possibly have been sold in ethnic bakeries, but those didn't exist outside of London.

Just let others enjoy it.

They preface it with the word “sourdough” because they want sourdough.

Personally I find it delicious. I love the holes that receive all the melty butter or egg yolk or glistening jam. The bread itself has a sproing and character than normal bread cannot match. The image of your DH crunching through the crust is making me want some right now. And then there is that faint sour tang.

You sound quite intolerant.

Gluten intolerant

Sourdough toast is inedible, it turns to brittle concrete.
And the combination of avocado and egg is a tasteless mush.

Edited

I love it toasted, I make sure to not overtoast it but I love that crunch.

More sourdough for us who love it, yay!

And avocado and egg on top is heaven.

I’ve never mentioned sourdough to anyone. I didn’t know talking about it was a thing (and I’m a lover of it).

Tearsinheavens · 11/05/2025 18:15

I recently ordered "extra sourdough" to go with My bacon from a hipster cafe and they charged me £2.50 - for ONE SLICE of sourdough bread toasted. I wept.

The Romans and ancient Greeks ate it. Also possibly the Vikings.

This is absolutely correct. I would say sourdough has been in the UK only 20 years

Oh no OP I thought we were Kin… but you’ve lost me at Brioche …

Brioche bread -absolute yum fest, but the French way with chocolate or even more butter and jam - NOT with burgers or the ubiquitous ‘ pulled pork’ ( another covid fad iirc)

History didn't start in 1950, the post war industrialisation of food production( particularly the chorely wood process) is generally considered to have been detrimental to the nation's health.
