Particularly when followed by

'home made, not from the supermarket'

Get over your sour selves, sick of hearing about this

*disclaimer - I dont eat bread. I have no yeast in this game.

I’m with you, sourdough is not a tasty bread

okydokethen · 11/05/2025 17:35

Urgh I can’t stand sourdough, IBS hell.

I watch OH order this sort of thing in cafes (because theres no other option) and he spends half hour, and a wrecked cafe table, trying to hack through the crust to eat his breakfast.

I had it with crushed avocado & a poached egg for breakfast this morning after my gym workout. Gorgeous & no cafe tables were harmed in the eating.

It's awful. And I say that as a bit of a bread fanatic.

And I agree those who make it at home somehow make it their entire personality.

mateusrose678 · 11/05/2025 17:38

Sourdough toast is inedible, it turns to brittle concrete.
And the combination of avocado and egg is a tasteless mush.

It’s not a fad. It’s the kind of bread everyone used to eat before processed supermarket bread was invented. I keep mine sealed in the fridge and it stays fresh for a week.

Maybe so, but we have a couple of wonderful local bakeries locally and sadly they have cut out some of the breads I enjoyed to make way for more sourdough varieties.
(Supermarket processed bread is horrid. Even sourdough is preferable 😬)

Not all of us, I can't remember the last time I mentioned mine to anyone else, it's just something I make same as any other food.

Interestingly, sourdough is supposed to be better for your gut.

MyKingdomForACat · 11/05/2025 17:48

Toasted sourdough bread is food of the Gods

BangersAndGnash · 11/05/2025 17:51

I love sourdough bread.

There’s bread…. And bread. We need to know what we are dealing with when it crops up on a thread.

Is it ok to say we had focaccia , or pita bread, or naan, or a baguette, or is it just sourdough that mustn’t be named?

Oh! I thought it was meant better to be better because of the fermentation/enzymes or some such?

How about when it costs the price of a week's shop and has pretty garnishings on top?

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 11/05/2025 17:53

Yes I wish they'd shut up about it too, but only because it makes me terribly jealous. I love good sourdough bread, but I'm gluten intolerant. Sad

Op, have you tried it toasted with crushed advocado and poached eggs? Or with bacon and dandelion leaves? Delicious.

Dandelion leaves? Do you mean like the ones that are growing in my garden right now? Do you cook them or just pick and eat?

Anyway - yabu op, I love sourdough 😋

It's quite nice when it's warm and dipping in quality olive oil . And you're in Italy. In the sun .

With a big wine!

Ha! I feel the same about people banging on about ‘protein’ and ‘strength training’ all the time!

Calliopespa · 11/05/2025 18:02

Just let others enjoy it.

They preface it with the word “sourdough” because they want sourdough.

Personally I find it delicious. I love the holes that receive all the melty butter or egg yolk or glistening jam. The bread itself has a sproing and character than normal bread cannot match. The image of your DH crunching through the crust is making me want some right now. And then there is that faint sour tang.

You sound quite intolerant.

How old are you OP out of interest?

BasilParsley · 11/05/2025 18:05

I am poking my head above the parapet to say that sour dough bread with anything, and brioche buns with burgers in particular are the work of the devil...

BunnyLake · 11/05/2025 18:05

I love sourdough bread but it sounds like a faff to make so I buy it. It’s the nicest bread in my opinion. I wish I had some now :(

Calliopespa · 11/05/2025 18:06

Sourdough is as almost different from bread as bread is from crumpet or focaccia. To not specify is as weird as saying “I had buttery toast for breakfast” when you actually mean you had a crumpet and butter.
