What are you up to today if you have chronic illness?

MewithME · 10/05/2025 14:02

I do like the What are you doing today thread. But as someone with an energy limiting illness, I find myself marvelling at the level of activity that is beyond me.

Sometimes I feel sad about it even after accepting my illness for a few years now.

My week at work has been brutal and I'm feeling very weak and worn down. I am trying to find some inner peace.

This morning I managed a bath and ds helped when shopping arrived. I sat in the garden for a little while but newish neighbours were playing loud music which I found a bit stressful.

I've managed to put a wash on and made some lunch for us. I'm now in bed listening to some music festival in town floating on the breeze. There's sirens going off, so hope nothing bad has happened to anyone.

I'm going to lie down for a couple of hours. Hoping to watch a film with DS later. Pizza for dinner.

I found a nice new podcast called Shedunnit with lots of Agatha Christie in it which is up my street.

I may just lay here and listen to that for a while.

So if you have ME or LC or fibro or anything else that is a flipping funsucker of a thing to deal with, do share your little things. Our world is smaller but we are here.

I will add I know there are those worse off than I am, but not matter what we deal with, chronic illness is hard and it's hard to feel part of the world.

I also get v weepy in PEM. Huge sympathies @MewithME- I think that long car trip and the stress of the visit is enough when you’re fully fit let alone battling illness.

I’m also back at work on Monday. I know I will get lots of comments about having a nice rest on my holidays which will make my heart sink. I’m just as exhausted as I was when I stopped work as I’m always exhausted, doesn’t matter how much I rest. I know it’s just a saying but still it makes my heart sink just thinking about coping with the exhaustion of it all!

Absolutely. The commentators about being recharged or refreshed are hard work. Smile and nod territory 🙄.

I've had a total of 4-6 days out of 42 to myself this summer and I was/will be working for half of those. I think autism is wearing me down too and menopause.

Anyway, back to bed and binge watching shortly. Hugs back atcha @FishFlaked

@MewithME I’m so sorry you’re struggling with PEM today. Be kind to yourself and remember how well you’ve done to drive there, cope with the visit etc…
I can relate to feeling weepy when PEM hits too, it just feels so hard and so unfair sometimes.
Hope tomorrow is a better one x

@MewithME

Hope you are doing okay and getting some time to recharge.

Struggle to get to sleep. Occasionally terrible insomnia.

really really prioritizing sleep over everything at the moment. Going to bed before I get tired and without a screen. Seems that there is a window between 10-10:30 where I fall asleep naturally. If I miss it can be up until 1am trying to drop off.

Easy to try to stay up to get things done but it just isn’t productive when there are other issues and wrecks the next day.

Magnesium G has reduced the insomnia.

Bedtime yoga helps.

We all have to learn not to push through. Though sometimes it's unavoidable.

Something I find helps keep my heart rate in an ok level is either mindfully pacing going upstairs....so I don't just march to the top in one go. I got a couple of steps and stop....breathe slowly. Also, walking. If I can go consciously slow. Again noticing my heart rate and stopping if it starts pounding... It can help.

I've got my visible armband. I'm pacing better today so far. Slow walking and lift not stairs.

I always think the biggie under all of it is stress which again, with my life, is unavoidable but something to work on where I can.

And also trauma. I've done talking therapies but have recently start looking at sound baths and have bought the nurosym gadget to try and help my vagal nerve. I know I'm very easily kicked into fight or flight. The nurosym certainly helps me at night...not sure long term yet. We shall see.

Edited

So sorry, it is tough. Mine is cardiac related and high heart rates and arrhythmia are an issue.

I carry a frozen water bottle. Can use it on my face to try to slow things down. Feels like a safety net in the hot weather.

I carry the meds in several places. In my handbag and another small pouch in my pocket.

I also practice the gentle breathing exercises every day. Seems to help and they are another thing to have ready.

Best wishes.

BerfyTigot · 29/08/2025 15:25

Sleep is also an issue for me and magnesium also helps me. Plus a hot bath, warm milk, blackout blinds and ive just started with the calm app.

BerfyTigot · 29/08/2025 15:30

Today I have had lunch with a friend. I can manage about an hour before needing a nap.

Otherwise a quiet day. I really need to tidy up before prepping tea.

Sorry to hear that you're unwell @MewithME Hope things improve soon xx

MewithME · 30/08/2025 18:55

Hello all. Crawling out of pem a bit today. Managed to collect school uniform order at least. DS is at his dad's (finally)...so I have a whole day to myself before work on Monday.

I am planning telly to a disgusting extent. Sigh.

Currently watching Destination X and cried because I don't think I'll ever see those places. Just having a minor menopausal mid life crisis day...but probably need it. Been keeping stuff in for six weeks in front of my boy. Urgh.

Sorry. Moaning again but I'm sort of ok.

Glad you got out yesterday @BerfyTigot

My hot bath on Thursday evening ended in disaster - I didn’t realise how slippy it was after using a new skin emollient.

Anyway, I managed to slip, bash myself about a bit and get some cracking bruises.

I swear that bathroom is out to get me …

Anyway, lesson learned.

Today DP took me out for a nice walk, and a browse in a huge Matalan store which has lots of chairs and benches! Drives me mad when big shops have no seating.

Stressybetty · 30/08/2025 19:21

@MewithME ah glad you're starting to come out of it. At least you have some time alone to rest now. We watched Destination x too, been years since we went abroad and I spent the whole time feeling very insecure and intimidated at not speaking the language and exhausted by preparing for the trip. I couldn't wait to get back home. I don't know if I could do that again. I quite fancy the idea of a mini cruise or something, might be less tiring?

Yes I have day dreamed about a cruise in Norway when DS is grown. Not sure I'd afford it but maybe. ..I can day dream.

I think you're right. Mustn't be rose tinted about things. My friend went abroad and didn't have a great time either this summer.

I am very sore today, all over.
We are going out for dinner with friends.
I have chosen a large G&T instead of a pain killer!

Stressybetty · 30/08/2025 19:45

Just put off BIL "popping in sometime between tomorrow night and Monday night to see his mum". Been made to feel really guilty that he can't see her. I just can't cope with manically tidying and cleaning the house and the stress of visitors and the pressure of having to do so. Making out he has no leave left and it might be months before he sees her again. Last time he saw her was over 2 years ago and hasn't bothered asking to come since or even facetiming. Lives 300 miles away. He's a very busy and very important type of person, treats DH like a second class citizen and this is typical of him expecting us to jump when he says so. I've just had enough of prioritising other people and accomodating everyone else's needs. Of course we need to sort the house for puppy visits and planning to do this over the next few weeks but that's in our own time not on someone else's schedule.

Stressybetty · 30/08/2025 19:54

@TheAutumnCrow Ah no, hope you're ok!

Stressybetty · 30/08/2025 19:55

Puppy pic for update!

Stressybetty · 30/08/2025 19:54

@TheAutumnCrow Ah no, hope you're ok!

Yes, thanks, and thank you @MewithME too.

DP is being very helpful and buzzing about with food etc. For reasons best known to him he’s currently making tequila cocktails. I’ll be fine as long as I don’t have a bath 😄

I am very bashed up though, with bruises. I find it a bit embarrassing but I don’t want it to stop me going out, because as you all know and say, trying to go out for a bit every day is very important.

Stressybetty · 30/08/2025 20:49

Tequila cocktails!

CharlotteCChapel · 30/08/2025 20:55

I have a chronic condition and Im recovering from a serious illness. I spent today on the Xbox and I will cook my dinner which my DH has helped prepare. We're having different dinners because since being ill sone things like garlic, neat tomatoes ie ones not in a mixed sauce, cinnamon are very unpleasant except for cinnamon which is too strong.

BerfyTigot · 31/08/2025 10:23

Today I'm having a quiet day on the sofa, Might need to take dog to field later so she can have a run.

I can collect a new book from amazon locker at the same time.

My energy levels have been better yesterday and today. Who knows why? Anyone else have random good days? I have plenty of bad ones.

BerfyTigot · 31/08/2025 10:25

Forgot to say, quiet day is to build up some reserves for a busy week ahead

MewithME · 31/08/2025 11:17

Hey @CharlotteCChapel what game are you playing? I haven't been gaming for a while but I will probably get back into it this autumn. Sometimes it takes too much energy for me and is too stimulating.

Waves @BerfyTigot . Sofa day ahead here too. Back at work tomorrow 😭 ds with his Dad. It's my one day of freedom. I will probably carry on with Destination X to the end. Total lack of any effort needed. I will probably have a soak in the bath tonight with an audiobook or podcast on.

I think I did a wash yesterday and haven't emptied it so will probably have to redo it 🙈

I woke at 6am and managed to go back to sleep. Woke again at 10am and still not dressed!

I have a horrible headache and feel very weak still. I must do very little today. So boring 🫩

Hope you are not too sore @TheAutumnCrow ... either with the bruises or tequila cocktail aftermath 😆 What are tequila cocktails? Is that like Margherita? I think I mix those up with mojitos. I was rewatching the Good Wife and Alicia likes her tequila. She goes hardcore in s6 or 7 and starts on tequila and triple sec at home 😁 I love her.

@Stressybetty hope you are doing ok and the puppies!

@CharlotteCChapel me & DH used to play Sea of thieves on Xbox, need to get back into it but takes a lot of time and energy up. I've got Harry Potter Hogwarts legacy but not even opened it yet. DH & I just usually end up arguing with him running off not telling me what he's doing and leaving me to faff about docking /crashing the ship etc then annoyed I'm not doing something else we apparently discussed pre game and I've forgotten 😵‍💫 😂 Too stressful!
Hi to everyone else and rest up well for the week ahead.
Pups are good, mums are being fed 4-5 meals a day.
Have actually scraped the dog hair off the landing today with my gadget and might hoover it also later or possibly not 😂

He made tequila cocktails out of tequila, vermouth and lemon juice, @MewithME which were strangely impressive.

I only had the one! 🍸
