Indeed.
Habemus Papam.
I do hope it’s another reformer.

BBC bullet point:

  • Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch says the UK has been "shafted"

Can’t find any details of that, as to why she would say that.

The Guardian:

'We've just been shafted' - Badenoch denounces US-UK trade deal
Kemi Badenoch, who is a fan of social media, has been reading Truth Social, where Donald Trump has posted these messages about the US-UK trade deal.
Today is an incredible day for America as we deliver our first Fair, Open, and Reciprocal Trade Deal — Something our past Presidents never cared about. Together with our strong Ally, the United Kingdom, we have reached the first, historic Trade Deal since Liberation Day. As part of this Deal, America will raise $6 BILLION DOLLARS in External Revenue from 10% Tariffs, $5 BILLION DOLLARS in new Export Opportunities for our Great Ranchers, Farmers, and Producers, and enhance the National Security of both the U.S. and the UK through the creation of an Aluminum and Steel Trading Zone, and a secure Pharmaceutical Supply Chain. This Deal shows that if you respect America, and bring serious proposals to the table, America is OPEN FOR BUSINESS. Many more to come — STAY TUNED!

Based on these figures, Badenoch said in a statement:
When Labour negotiates, Britain loses.
We cut our tariffs — America tripled theirs.
Keir Starmer called this ‘historic.’ It’s not historic, we’ve just been shafted!
In fact, the UK was shafted in early April, when President Trump announced his global tariffs. Today’s outcome amounts to a partial unshafting – but not a total one, as Keir Starmer sort of accepted during his Q&A. (See 4.33pm).
When Trump announced his global tariffs, the Tories issued a news release saying this was “disappointing news”. But they criticised Labour for not negotiating exemptions, and they said Britain was getting a Brexit bonus because its tariffs were lower than the EU’s (a situation that lasted only a week, because Trump subsequently suspended the additional tariffs that applied to the EU).

Did Badenoch completely misread the tariff changes?

Mandelson confirmed as Pope…

There’s another appointment that the right wing said was a bad idea. It turns out to be inspired.

PandoraSocks · 08/05/2025 17:51

Oh, someone should get AI to do the Prince of Darkness as Pope!

bombastix · 08/05/2025 17:53

Sour grapes I think. Notable silence from her colleagues and no cheers for her given her apparently close relationship with Vance. What it really confirms is her total irrelevancy

Saucery · 08/05/2025 17:53

Ugh. I hate the term ‘shafted’. It’s like ‘tear you a new one’. Violent, male and sexual. Good job Badenoch can’t sink any lower in my estimation.

Suggested MN Topic appearing upthread in the ‘If you like this thread…..’ is General Health. I mean….what? Grin

One thing I don't understand. We export beef to the US. US exports beef to us.

What is the point? Is it something like we favour some cuts and US others and so we off load the unpopular cuts to each other?

InMySpareTime · 08/05/2025 17:58

We don’t even call cuts the same name as the US. Good luck untangling any of those to sell a cut that means anything across the Atlantic (in either direction).

It's probably just a side note in the deal, details still have to be negotiated, it's just Trump wanting to announce something.

Starmer didn't even know the 🍊was going to make the announcement until last night.

@PandoraSocks - though we don’t have the detail, you can assume the opposite. The US and the UK both produce beef, and the US will have to produce it to UK standards to export. The US produces prime beef which is delicious. Whether a UK consumer will want to eat it will be a matter of consumer preference but some US beef is very good indeed (corn fed and a different taste). The UK has a tradition of grass fed beef which is also v good and much prized.

Notonthestairs · 08/05/2025 18:15

It's really telling, looking at the various online broadsheets, how they have laid out their front page articles. The Telegraph obviously the most grudging of them all.
Thank heavens for the new Pope or they might have to say something positive.

Ah, right. Thank you!

derxa · 08/05/2025 18:26

You don’t mention feed lots and other questionable practices…hormones to speed up growth.

bombastix · 08/05/2025 18:32

I don’t mention them because these practices aren’t within the scope of the deal. The UK doesn’t import hormone beef and won’t start under this deal either.

DuncinToffee · 08/05/2025 18:36

An American Pope, you can't make it up

Trump will be even more insufferable.

cardibach · 08/05/2025 18:39

Only sort of. He’s a naturalised Peruvian. Of the Augustinian tradition, but a centrist, so as distant from his training as Francis was from the Jesuits.

I hope you’re right because otherwise it’s another good kicking for British farmers.

Karistyleaftea · 08/05/2025 18:43

We don't have to eat Amercan beef - or any meat at all really.
When did "Optimism" become a dirty word to our media?
As for Kemi Badenoch , her spiteful narrative is sickening .
I am not sure if I can stomach QT tonight if it is on.

The NFU has cautiously welcomed the beef deal, but indicated they wouldn't be happy with further agricultural agreements.
