An American pontiff, eh?

Trump must have threatened the Vatican with massive tariffs on wafers and cassocks. And then cut a trade deal whereby God’s Vicar on Earth has to be a yank.

bombastix · 08/05/2025 18:49

The deal gives beef farmers in the UK a slightly better deal for the export of their produce to the US. UK beef is largely grass fed at its best. That gives a very good taste, less fat, but more expensive. A lot of other countries will feed corn to produce beef. This is cheaper and fattens the animal faster than pasture. So too the use of hormones which is banned on import in the UK (we kept that from the EU).

It’s like comparing UK lamb to NZ lamb. There is a quality and price difference on these products.

From the little I know about the new Pope, appears a good choice I’m heartened by the name choice & the meaning behind it.

I hope you’re right because otherwise it’s another good kicking for British farmers.

Not being rude but have you ever got a good word to say ?

It’s what the deal says. Cant you accept that?

DuncinToffee · 08/05/2025 19:24

More info on the beef, (my bold)

Many people in my mentions seem surprised to learn that many goods, including beef, are simultaneously exported to and imported from the same country.

I know it's counterintuitive but it happens all the time, and no it's not just to waste of sea miles - traders aren't burning money for no reason.

Many people also appear to think the UK government relies on US authorities to certify beef as meeting UK standards and regulations.

This is incorrect.

Proving compliance with UK rules requires undergoing checks and inspections by UK authorities, not the USDA.

It’s the nature of trade. For example, we import whiskey made in the Republic of Ireland to the UK. Does that mean we don’t sell whisky to them? Yes we do!

Trade is about market access. Today, the UK has said yes to some high quality US beef at a lower tariff rate. They have given our farmers access for grass fed beef at a lower tariff.

But also this deal has probably saved a lot of jobs in car manufacturing and related industry. Well done Starmer.

i hope we get some improvements on tech industry and pharma in due course.

Not the sort that Trump would approve of, though. An immigrant and a moderate.

Only sort of. He’s a naturalised Peruvian. Of the Augustinian tradition, but a centrist, so as distant from his training as Francis was from the Jesuits.

What does it mean to be Augustinian cardi?

Piggywaspushed · 08/05/2025 19:49

Also, can I make a polite request not to use the term Yank? Ta.

I’m not an expert. His writings are interesting. He supported dogma - original sin and the need of god’s grace for eg. He believed in a physical hell as a punishment and heaven as a reward. His views shifted a bit over his life. Not a fan of women on the whole…due to his belief in original sin.
An eccentric traditionalist is how I’d put it, so not someone who would be described as moderate in the modern church.
I’m sure others on here have deeper knowledge.

Er, ok. But I can’t see how yank(ee) could be remotely offensive.

Could I ask what your reason is?

Piggywaspushed · 08/05/2025 20:31

Yankee and Yank don't have the same connotations. Literally no one says Yankee anymore except for talking about baseball and a few Americans in some kind of frivolous banter. Many so called 'Yanks' aren't even Yankees and there is a whooooole minefield right there.

Yank is generally use pejoratively by British people. I think you were using it somewhat in that dismissive way. It goes with Japs, Kikes, Limeys, Eye Ties . My DH doesn't ever get much involved in US sport but if he was annoyed at something in, say, the golf, he would say' bloody Yanks'. He's not very enlightened.

I am half American, American passport holder, and would rather you didn't use it. Thank you.

Well, you did ask nicely. So fair enough.

But I don’t accept a word of your justification. It’s obvious nonsense. Yank comparable with kike? I doubt you believe that yourself, frankly.

PandoraSocks · 08/05/2025 20:40

I think you should have left it at: "Well, you did ask nicely. So fair enough " Rummly.

cardibach · 08/05/2025 20:42

Generally tend to think it’s best to use words for any group tha5 the group 8s happy with. I’d agree it tends to be used perjoratively these days, with a ‘tone’ and I think we can probably articulate our issues with the current regime without going there….

You asked for an explanation and then don't accept 'a word' of it. OK then.

BIWI · 08/05/2025 21:03

@Rummlywas there any need for that?

Piggywaspushed · 08/05/2025 20:57

If it offends you that’s good enough for me to do as you asked.

The point of asking for reasons is not just to agree with them.

FWIW, I’d say in Britain ‘yank’ is something close-ish to ‘pom’ in its effect. It’s certainly nothing like the examples you gave.

And, TBH, I don’t think I did use it in a derogatory fashion.

But that’s enough of that.

Piggywaspushed · 08/05/2025 21:18

Yes, indeed it is.

The VE day celebration currently on BBC is very EDI in nature. It's lovely to watch.

My mum was 19, and just about to celebrate her 20th birthday. The previous year, she took her youngest brother to a hospital in Belfast because he was very ill. He died of childhood leukaemia a few weeks later and she's now at rest with him.

Her father, my granddad fought in WW1 and his brother died at Yrpes.

Mum went out to celebrate with a heavy heart for those who died. She was young and just wanted to have a good night out.

Mum voted Remain, was delighted by the Good Friday Agreement and died aged 99. A wonderful woman who was kind and generous with all her eight children.

Piggywaspushed · 08/05/2025 22:15

Aw, that's so lovely.

BIossomtoes · 08/05/2025 22:17

I’m a soggy mess after that. My parents were from the Great generation too, it’s ten years this year since they died within six months of each other at 97 and 99. My dad missed his 100th birthday by nine months.

Evenstar · 08/05/2025 22:24

The Daily Mirror today reprinted the illustration they used on VE Day, I thought it was a timely reminder with the rise of the far right, we must stand as they stood in whatever way we can against losing the freedoms they fought for

How odd. That was in the Telegraph the other day, redrawn by Blower.

Universal sentiment. My grandfather fought in Italy. He came back. His brother didn’t make it.
