How many eggs does your DH or older ds eat as a portion?

daisydalrymple · 05/05/2025 11:54

DH has just had 5 scrambled eggs for breakfast.
DH and DS18 never have less than 4 eggs as a portion. So I buy a dozen on a shop on a Monday. By weds they’re gone.
we got through 42 eggs last week, me, dd and ds2 had 6 between us.
I think it’s excessive, but wondering if this is now the norm in this high protein era.

2 or 3

DH had 4 recently with other things, I told him it was greedy. It is the whole protein thing. Eggs are expensive these days too.

I couldn't bear to live with someone who disapprovingly told me I was 'greedy' in sanctimonious tones.

What are you - his Mother? It's just so awful to police someone else's food.

No one needs to eat 3 rashers of bacon, 2 large sausages, 4 eggs, beans, tomatoes, avocado and 3 slices of toast for breakfast, having already had a large home made smoothie with greek yoghurt honey fruit nut butter and milk, and a bowl of granola all before 9:30am. Especially when that only left 2 out of 6 eggs (only bought the day before) for the other 2 people in the house. The aim of a weekly family food shop isn't to eat it all within 24 hours.
It is greed and it is selfish to not consider the people you are living with.

I only have 1/12th of an egg but it’s an ostrich’s.

HiRen · 05/05/2025 17:26

I can't believe your DH is in competition with his children. Teenaged boys are a law unto themselves when it comes to nutrition: there's a period of about 8 years where normality goes out the window.

But your grown man of a DH? How can he be jealous of the number of eggs or chicken breasts or salmon filets his children eat, to the point of needing to eat more than them?! Crazy.

EwwSprouts · 05/05/2025 17:27

DS20 has two all ways except boiled where he would only have one.

BlueBlueCowWondering · 05/05/2025 17:34

Seems no one is considering the size of the eggs. I buy mixed boxes and some of the eggs are only 50g (I weigh them for cakes)
So 4 is equivalent to only 2 large.
Not quite comparing apples and pears but 'an egg' isn't just 'an egg'

EverythingElseIsTaken · 05/05/2025 17:37

Adult DS has 3 in an omelette, 2 scrambled with toast. I have two in an omelette or scrambled with toast.

I was always told that too many eggs would “bind you up”.

JustSawJohnny · 05/05/2025 17:42

Fried or poached 1, boiled 2, scrambled 2.

5 is excessive, IMO.

CrickityCrickets · 05/05/2025 18:49

People eating 12 in one sitting is insane.

I always buy a box of large

Isn’t it meant to be carbs before the gym, protein after?

He has his tea once he’s home! It’s constant eating……

blueleavesgreensky · 05/05/2025 19:23

People in here saying ‘anything more than 2 is gluttony’ as they pile up sausages, beans and 2 pieces of toast.

I have 3. No toast. Maybe some cheese scrambled. That’s a whole lot less food than the combos listed above .

Like OP, I have considered size but now only buy Large, as I've found Mixed Eggs always seem to be small, so they are a false economy to me.

As stated above, 6 (large) eggs is average for my sporty teen/ young adult, with toast and maybe a tin of beans too. 2 (large) eggs for DH is enough for him.

Seventree · 05/05/2025 20:46

1 or 2 depending on what he's having with it.

Flamingopingo · 05/05/2025 21:04

4 for me, but I'm a vegetarian so don't get a lot of protein from other sources and I love eggs.

Octopus45 · 05/05/2025 22:35

My DS has four as a portion

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 05/05/2025 22:35

Scrambled eggs I do 2 a portion

HmmNot · 05/05/2025 22:41

Probably 2-3. But like pp I couldn’t stand the idea of my partner policing what I eat. Of course everyone should ensure they’re not taking more than their share or what the family can afford, but beyond that an adult can decide for themselves what to eat.

longtompot · 05/05/2025 22:45

2 eggs if poached, fried or boiled
3 if scrambled

Your 9 year old ate 12 eggs for a morning snack?

OOOPS, that is a significant typo. HALF a dozen, sorry!! My 9yo has always been non stop active and eaten a lot, he uses the food.

RareGoalsVerge · 05/05/2025 22:53

Scrambling is a silly thing to do with eggs because they seem to shrink and the volume you get from 2 scrambled eggs is tiny compared to 2 poached or 2 fried. I'd have 3 if I was scrambling for me and do 7 if DH wanted some, but I normally just poach 2.

QuickFawn · 05/05/2025 22:54

Eggs are a cheaper protein than salmon or chicken so you’re probably fixating on the wrong issue

tinyspiny · 05/05/2025 23:01

2 for boiled , 3 for omelette . Scrambled is always with something else like sausages / cheesy mushrooms so 3/4 between 2 adults . We do have large or XL eggs though .

AnonMJ · 05/05/2025 23:14

Depends. DS age 12 can easily eat 4 eggs scrambled. Probably only 2 boiled.

but scrambled would be for breakfast or his tea. Boiled would be for a snack between meals.

if I do scrambled eggs for all 4 of us I would do 15 eggs.

it’s a good source of protein

when my brothers were teens in the 90s this was also the case then. They would also drink at least 2 litres of milk a day between them.
