How many eggs does your DH or older ds eat as a portion?

daisydalrymple · 05/05/2025 11:54

DH has just had 5 scrambled eggs for breakfast.
DH and DS18 never have less than 4 eggs as a portion. So I buy a dozen on a shop on a Monday. By weds they’re gone.
we got through 42 eggs last week, me, dd and ds2 had 6 between us.
I think it’s excessive, but wondering if this is now the norm in this high protein era.

2 as boiled or scrambled 3 for an omelette. We have eggs in carbonara or kedgeree too sometimes. I buy 6-12 eggs a week, only DH and I eat them

RoseDog · 05/05/2025 12:18

Dp and ds 20 would eat 4 scrambled, we have XL eggs. Fried they would have 2. Boiled I’m not sure!

I would scramble 3 but only eat 2 and give one to the dog cos she loves scrambled eggs and looks at me all sad when I have them.

DownWhichOfLate · 05/05/2025 12:18

I’d eat 4 as scrambled or an omelette but I’m quite energetic and need the protein! My husband, not so much.

2-6 eggs depending on availability and hunger. Lots of calories burnt during a usual day. In good shape.

TiredArtTeacher · 05/05/2025 12:20

6 bomboclaat eggs Steven!

HiRen · 05/05/2025 12:25

Two.

It’s the cholesterol.

I only buy large eggs. Can’t think it’s fun laying massive XL eggs Blush

Seems like every five minutes the opinion on whether dietary cholesterol is bad for you changes. Wish I knew for sure...

Eggs haven't been considered a bad food for decades.

daisydalrymple · 05/05/2025 15:04

Thanks for all the replies. A mixture of opinion then.
DS1 does go to the gym 3 times a week, and is very fit and healthy. DH not so much, he just likes to eat and I feel like it’s getting a bit out of hand for the grocery bill.
I eat eggs in moderation, so might have a couple scrambled and a couple poached each month. Probably make pancakes and bake a cake once a month too. Just seems every time I go to get the eggs, the egg box is yet again empty, even though I’ve just bought a new one,
It’s not just the eggs. DH thinks he should have 2 chicken breasts as a portion now, or 2 salmon or other fish fillets, because ds2 who is only 10 has a whole fillet / chicken breast etc. DH says as he’s a grown man he should have twice as much as a 10 year old. I argue that he doesn’t order two steaks if we go out to eat for example.

Yes he’s grown, not growing. He’s being very foolish.

Hatty65 · 05/05/2025 15:11

Teenage (19) son will quite happily make himself 6 fried eggs on 3 or 4 bits of toast.

Hollow legs.

Codlingmoths · 05/05/2025 15:13

My 9yo is quite sporty and had a dozen eggs for a morning snack the other week when he had a basketball tournament all week. He’s growing and playing sport every day, he needs it. My dh isn’t silly enough to think his own energy levels need 2 chicken breasts! And if he did I’d ask him interestedly if he was keeping his 3 sports teams and training sessions and endless practice secret and if he was also shooting up like a weed, as I rather thought there was only one direction for middle aged men to grow in.

Your 9 year old ate 12 eggs for a morning snack?

AtomicBlondeRose · 05/05/2025 15:19

The argument about having twice as much as a 10 year old is spurious - the child is actively growing and needs a lot of energy! Any adult wanting two bloody salmon fillets of chicken breasts at a time better be bringing in the big bucks to be able to justify chowing down on the most expensive things you can buy. Eggs, fine, go to town on them. But he can damn well full up on bread if he’s hungry.

GarlicPile · 05/05/2025 15:20

SouthLondonMum22 · 05/05/2025 12:10

DH and I eat the same for scrambled eggs - 3.

Yep. No DH or DS here; I have three. Except that one time I got a substitution of gigantic, organic, free range eggs! I had two at a time of those and they were delicious, but I wouldn't pay nearly a pound per egg in the normal run of things. The hens must've been the size of an average goose!

VerityUnreasonble · 05/05/2025 15:22

When I was a lad, I ate four dozen eggs
Ev'ry morning to help me get large
And now that I'm grown, I eat five dozen eggs
So I'm roughly the size of a barge

DenholmElliot11 · 05/05/2025 15:23

Surely your DH can have as much food as he wants? 2 chicken breasts or salmon portions If he wants. 6 eggs scrambled.

I think it's excessive, bordering on greedy, but it doesn't matter what I think.

Let him crack on.

TheCurious0range · 05/05/2025 15:23

DH had 4 recently with other things, I told him it was greedy. It is the whole protein thing. Eggs are expensive these days too.

HowAmITheCatsGranny · 05/05/2025 15:25

Ds made eggs at lunchtime today, he had three scrambled, but also a couple of sausage patties, made into breakfast burritos, so three corn tortillas as well. He’s 18 and well over 6 foot. (On the other hand as a female a foot shorter, I was happy with one egg, one tortilla, and no meat! I wouldn’t want more than two in a meal for myself.)

FetidMoppet · 05/05/2025 15:25

My ds LOVES eggs and has 6 pretty much every day. (17, tall, fit) Where you went wrong was in buying 1 dozen at a time! I get 3 boxes of 12 large eggs at a time.

TisILeClair · 05/05/2025 15:25

We have 2 medium eggs scrambled as a portion. eggs are cheap though, cheaper than chicken breast etc.

Many people don’t eat as much protein as they should - largely because good protein sources are mostly meat and meat is not cheap unlike flour based products and potates that peasants eat.

CherryVanillaPie · 05/05/2025 15:26

I have 2 but men have higher calorie needs

I took it to mean 12 eggs over a week’s worth of morning snacks? But the wording is ambiguous! I just can’t imagine anyone eating 12 in a row like that…

Whilst I agree broadly with the sentiment, if he isn't doing the grocery shopping or managing the budget, it isn't necessarily good for the family if others have to go without or a meal can't be made with what is left.

doodleschnoodle · 05/05/2025 15:28

I’d have 2 or 3 myself as a portion of scrambled eggs with toast so I don’t think 4 or 5 is that wild for a teenage boy or adult man.

JoyousEagle · 05/05/2025 15:28

5 seems like a lot - was he having anything with them? I have two for scrambled eggs, but on two slices of toast. I’d have more (although not 5) if I wasn’t having the toast.
