How many eggs does your DH or older ds eat as a portion?

daisydalrymple · 05/05/2025 11:54

DH has just had 5 scrambled eggs for breakfast.
DH and DS18 never have less than 4 eggs as a portion. So I buy a dozen on a shop on a Monday. By weds they’re gone.
we got through 42 eggs last week, me, dd and ds2 had 6 between us.
I think it’s excessive, but wondering if this is now the norm in this high protein era.

Omelette I will use 3 eggs. For scrambled I use 2 eggs, boiled I have 2 and if its A fried egg just the one

SheilaFentiman · 05/05/2025 15:29

Two or three- if I was scrambling eggs for 2, I would probably use 5 eggs.

For myself - 2 if with anything else (eg toast or bacon) 3 if a stand-alone brekkie.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 05/05/2025 15:31

Dh- 1 if fried, two boiled, 3 in omelette
DS(grown) 2 fried, 4 scrambled, 4 in omelette.

Two for.scrambled eggs, three for an omelette. Two.for boiled or poached, 1 with a fry up or in a bacon sandwich.

4 for scrambled egg for one is very piggy imo.

3 eggs in an omelette is just fine but 4 scrambled is "very piggy"? Really? One extra egg (maybe 80 calories) is the difference between ok and "very piggy"?

Or is it that anyone who eats even a small amount more than you is considered piggy

frozendaisy · 05/05/2025 15:35

5 eggs for breakfast one portion of scrambled eggs is excessive

TeenageRooster · 05/05/2025 15:36

@daisydalrymple you've said
feel like it’s getting a bit out of hand for the grocery bill but buying more eggs is going to be miles cheaper than buying double the amount of salmon or chicken. I'd be telling your DH to up his consumption of fruit or veg as snacks first. My teen DS will eat a good number of eggs, 2 if alongside a mixed plate of other food but 4 or 5 easily if just with toast. I have just upped my egg ordering, but I also get apples and bananas in and he knows he has to eat those too.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 05/05/2025 15:39

2-3 depending on what format. Ds is a tall, skinny, hungry 17yo but even he wouldn't eat 5 eggs in one go.

threenaancurrywhore · 05/05/2025 15:40

More than two eggs feels like a lot – not in a tee-hee I’m so tiny this massive salad of half a grape has filled me for the week way; more it just feels excessively eggy. I had two fried on toast at lunchtime, eaten on the run between tending plague-ridden DC, and I’m still hungry. But couldn’t and wouldn’t go for a third egg. Too eggy! Like goat’s cheese: too farmyardy!

I could, however, eat the equivalent of a dozen eggs in the form of cake, so…

AutumnFroglets · 05/05/2025 15:41

It’s not just the eggs. DH thinks he should have 2 chicken breasts as a portion now, or 2 salmon or other fish fillets, because ds2 who is only 10 has a whole fillet / chicken breast etc. DH says as he’s a grown man he should have twice as much as a 10 year old.

Ohhhh, it's not about the food at all. It's territorial pissing and willy waving because DS will be starting puberty. You need to stamp that out right now before DS notices his dad is "fighting" him for resources.

daisydalrymple · 05/05/2025 15:42

Sorry I forgot to answer what they have with the eggs, DS tends to have avocado on toast with them, DH toast and or bacon.
im not telling him what he can or can’t eat as such, just that we’re a family of 5, so we can’t really afford to be doubling up on the protein in each meal.
not to turn this into another mumsnet chicken thread 🤦🏻‍♀️😂 but he roasted a chicken last week, I’d eaten in work so was going to have chicken sandwich for supper when I got in. He’d used up the whole chicken between four of them. I really think it’s excessive, but he doesn’t.
I keep telling him the boys are still growing, whereas he isn’t, but he still says he’s a man and should have more. Despite ds1 being 18 and as tall as him and way more active.

SplendidUtterly · 05/05/2025 15:47

I would imagine your sporty, 18 year old DS needs more food than your not very active DH. He's "willy waving" like a previous poster already said.

MsTamborineMan · 05/05/2025 15:49

Dh would have 1-2, maybe 3 if an omelette. He's a fairly active but fairly average sized man

On MN everyone is a hollow legged 7ft tall strapping lad but the reality is in Britain most people are overweight and most people are not deficient in protein. Your DH doesn't need 4 eggs or 2 chicken breasts

Pedallleur · 05/05/2025 15:53

Usually 2 each or more depending on poached, scrambled, boiled. We go thro a min of 18 a week (3 of us)

SheilaFentiman · 05/05/2025 15:54

If he didn’t need two chicken breasts for the last 20 years or whatever, why does he need two now? Was he not a man when he married you and fathered two kids?!

Crumblesandcustard · 05/05/2025 16:00

I've just been out for a 20km run and had scrambled eggs on toast for lunch after. I had 2 eggs and 1 piece of toast. 6 eggs sounds like loads, I'm female though.

FortyElephants · 05/05/2025 16:01

2, but I'd be happy if he ate 4, he's slim and active and vegetarian.

ETA this is DS who is 16 and needs the fuel. DH wouldn't have more than 2 in a serving.

Moveoverdarlin · 05/05/2025 16:04

I would always have 3 for scrambled egg and omelettes. Perfectly reasonable for a man to have 4.

Enthusiasticcarrotgrower · 05/05/2025 16:04

Muchtoomuchtodo · 05/05/2025 12:15

DS1 has 4 boiled eggs as a snack an hour or so before going to the gym! With 2 teenage boys in the house we get through at least 3 dozen eggs a week, usually nearer 4 dozen!

Isn’t it meant to be carbs before the gym, protein after?

RobinHeartella · 05/05/2025 16:07

Do they also use antlers in all of their decorating?

Seriously though, I think 4-5 scrambled eggs for a grown man is fine. I would happily have 3 and I'm a smallish woman

IAmTheLogLady · 05/05/2025 16:09

DenholmElliot11 · 05/05/2025 15:23

Surely your DH can have as much food as he wants? 2 chicken breasts or salmon portions If he wants. 6 eggs scrambled.

I think it's excessive, bordering on greedy, but it doesn't matter what I think.

Let him crack on.

Eggcelent pun.

SugarPlumpFairyCakes · 05/05/2025 16:11

My ds aged 20 eats 9 eggs every day.

Ds aged 15 eats six.

They are both into weight training and rugby and eat loads of protein.

Seems excessive to me. We go through so many eggs.

Calliopespa · 05/05/2025 16:16

Fwoooof!! I can almost smell the methionine farts from here … 💨💨💨

Three is the most I’ve really seen in one sitting .

andtheworldrollson · 05/05/2025 16:21

Do they eat basically well - do they have 5 to 8 portions of fruit and veg a day?
do they eat carbs - those cheap yet unsexy filler foods - with all these eggs ?
are they a healthy weight?

if yes to all- at east eggs are cheaper than sone other things

if no they are greedy

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 05/05/2025 16:22

@daisydalrymple and what is his heart like? how is his cholestrol!!! that is way too many and just pure greed¬

Esssa · 05/05/2025 16:23

I eat a dozen as scrambled eggs. I'd make 2 dozen if I was feeding my 2 kids as well. Though they are quail eggs. We have our own birds and are swimming in eggs. Just as well really cos a dozen are £4.20 in Sainsbury's. One chicken egg is equivalent to 3 or 4 quail eggs depending on their size.
