Cate Blanchett for me; Blue Jasmine, Carol, Veronica Guerin, Notes on a Scandal… I could go on but I think that she’s just phenomenal. Who would you pick?☺️

My favorites are Audrey Hepburn and Doris Day.
Though alive one I always loved Andy MacDowell. As well I like Anne Hathaway , Rachel McAdams, Jennifer Garner Catherine Zeta Jones, as well as Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck...
And I had a huge crush on Leonardo di Caprio back in Titanic days.

Stephen Graham, Maxine Peake, Alison Steadman, Lesley Manville, Cate Blanchett, Timothy Spall off the top of my head but am sure I have missed a few.

Vincent D'Onofrio is underrated. Loved him in Law and Order CI, he was great in MIB and Daredevil.

I admire both Toby Jones and Jason Watkins. They are so versatile and never seem to get typecast like other actors and can convincingly inhabit amazingly different roles. By contrast, the late Sean Connery was enjoyable to watch but I felt he was always Sean Connery, whatever the role.

He plays a similar character, which isn’t actually like himself, he has an exceptional talent for comedy acting. But when you see him in things like the Truman Show, Bruce Almighty and True Crimes, he does show a lot more depth of character.

I've only ever seen The Truman Show, which is a film I like very much.

NewBrightonEel · 04/05/2025 23:06

Stephen Graham

Phil Davis. Fabulous and seems underrated.
Can't agree with Cate Blanchett.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 04/05/2025 23:11

Ralph Fiennes. He absolutely draws me in, he's captivating in everything I've seen him in.

Great thread!

My top picks in no particular order:

Anthony Hopkins, (I was lucky enough to see him on stage with Judi Dench in my youth - he was great!)
Jodie Foster
Meryl Streep
Ian McShane (he’s come into his own in his old age!)
Viola Davis - she elevates everything she’s in
Christian Bale

Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant are in the ‘honourable mention’ category for me - very good, but not great.

Lighteningstrikes · 04/05/2025 23:35

Jason Watkins
Jill Halfpenny
Jennifer Anniston

BarneyRonson · 04/05/2025 23:44

Hugh Laurie - I can’t believe the same actor played King George in Blackadder and the title character in House

Also, Michael Crawford performing as Frank Spencer and as the Phantom of the Opera…incredible it’s the same bloke!

Also, Michael Crawford performing as Frank Spencer and as the Phantom of the Opera…incredible it’s the same bloke!

He was sensational in phantom.

Most agree he’s never been bettered, despite years of successors.

It was the voice, the intonation, the movement … everything.

He was funny as Frank but clearly just mucking round in comparison.

augustusglupe · 05/05/2025 09:09

Denzel Washington
Ben Affleck
Jim Carrey
Dustin Hoffman
Clint Eastwood
Jack Nicholson
Glenn Close

YesYesAllGood I’ve always loved Michael Crawford. He’s so charismatic.
