Cate Blanchett for me; Blue Jasmine, Carol, Veronica Guerin, Notes on a Scandal… I could go on but I think that she’s just phenomenal. Who would you pick?☺️

Gary Oldman is brilliant in Slow Horses.

SunsetCocktails · 04/05/2025 10:05

Gary Oldman. I don’t think there’s anything he’s been in where he hasn’t totally immersed himself in the role.

EtonMessy · 04/05/2025 10:06

Agree with Gary Oldman especially in Slow Horses. Will also add Jason Watkins who I think is excellent too . Lesley Manville too is amazing in everything.
American actors I’d say Stanley Tucci and Jack Nicholson.

I think this is an impossible question to answer.

I've not even heard of a lot of modern day actors and for I know they might be wonderful and outstanding.

Even of the actors I am familiar with there are so many that are very talented and whose work I love to watch that I couldn't rank them as best, second best etc.

It's like the Classic Fm Hall of fame vote: impossible out of all the classical music available to narrow it down to 3 pieces.

Agree. We usually name British and American actors because it's more niche to watch foreign language films but I've been blown away by some performances of actors I don't know.

I watched The Worst Person in the World yesterday. The female lead is incredible.

But for this thread Gary Oldman is awesome, Mark Rylance Stanley Tucci, Judith Dench, I love Jesse Buckley in everything she's in, Olivia Colman...so much talent around.

Can't pick one 🙈

EasternStandard · 04/05/2025 10:10

She’s good but I like Meryl Streep. Her TDWP was spot on.

Ralph Finnes

Yeah agree. Still think he was the best heathcliffe.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 04/05/2025 10:14

Charles Dance.

Hoppinggreen · 04/05/2025 10:14

Michael Sheen, Andrew Scott

boobot1 · 04/05/2025 10:15

Love Morgan Freeman too. Loved Alan Rickman and Maggie Smith. Johnny depp is a good actor too.

Sgtmajormummy · 04/05/2025 10:20

Jared Harris.
I first noticed him in The Terror and have looked out for him ever since. He’s been in The Crown and Mad Men, raising the standard just by being there!

MyOtherProfile · 04/05/2025 09:50

Yes! I still love him though 😍

Me too I find Bill Nighy being Bill Nighy soothing. 🙂

Maddy70 · 04/05/2025 10:29

Stephen Graham
Anthony Hopkins
Judy Dench
I think are extraordinary

Rockhopper1 · 04/05/2025 10:32

Sarah Lancashire & Andrew Scott

Calliopespa · 04/05/2025 10:34

Jack O'Connell and Kate Winslet

Winslet was good but where has she gone?

Currently liking Olivia Coleman and Keeley.

Chalamet is indeed surprisingly good and I do think Hugh Grant is massively underrated. He’s actually better as a flawed bitter character than he is at fluffy roles he made his name with - and which I think make people underrate him.

Fiennes deserves mention.

In terms of raw acting ability, for me it’s Hugh Grant.

BangersAndGnash · 04/05/2025 10:35

Gary Oldman
Jim Broadbent
Helen Mirren
Judi D
Mark Rylance

Amongst younger actors
Saiorse Ronan
Timothe Chamolet

I LOVE Bill Nighy and watch everything he is in a would happily marry him, I love his performance but it is pretty much the same performance with different nuances. Sorry Bill, I don’t love you less for it.

ETA David Oyelowo , after seeing Coriolanus last year.

And Toby Jones

Sux2buthen · 04/05/2025 10:35

David Dawson in the Last Kingdom was a masterclass

Check out the Beast must die., think it's on itvx.

He's in that with Cush Jumbo who I like too and Billy Howle.

It's a bit silly but a good watch.

Edited

Yup Johnny is good.
Alan Rickman I liked but he had a slight Bill Nighy thing in that they are always Alan’s and Bill.

Oh and how am I forgetting Meryl Streep?!

Changeissmall · 04/05/2025 10:36

Andrew Scott.
Always thought Aaron Paul is great too.
Judi Dench.
Love Lawrence Fishburne in anything.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt have sometimes been phenomenal.

Unforgettablefire · 04/05/2025 10:37

James McAvoy. I hadn’t heard of him until I watched split and he blew my mind, never seen anything like it.

Yes agree. He’s a contender.

DelphiniumBlue · 04/05/2025 10:38

Rupert Everett is a fantastic actor, I don’t think I've ever seen a better film performance than his in St Trinians.
I also rate Nicola Walker, Lesley Manville, Stephen Graham and Ruth Wilson. Obviously Ian McKellern, also Taron Egerton for his versatility.

RipleyJones · 04/05/2025 10:40

Jodie Comer

Leonardo DC

I was going to add Jason Watkins also. he was incredible as Christopher Jeffires.

Calliopespa · 04/05/2025 10:40

Yes Ian McKellen is up there.
