Cate Blanchett for me; Blue Jasmine, Carol, Veronica Guerin, Notes on a Scandal… I could go on but I think that she’s just phenomenal. Who would you pick?☺️

I think personally he is possibly the most genuinely talented - especially as a disturbing character.

There’s a lightness of touch that can be overlooked when you see him in things like Paddington and stuttering through Four Weddings in more obvious roles.

But very versatile.

TBH the first time I realised Hugh Grant could actually act was with Paddington Two. Loved him in that movie.

Strokethefurrywall · 04/05/2025 13:56

Gary Oldman
Tom Hanks

This ^ without any doubt.

Stephen Graham isn’t even the best actor to come out of Liverpool. (I am a HUGE David Morrissey fan!)
Al Pacino is the best archived A list actor - picked that description up from The Rest is Entertainment. He couldn’t open a movie now but in his day, unbeatable. From the Godfather I and II, Sea of Love, Donnie Brasco. My favourite is Frankie & Johnny.
Best actor now - Gary Oldman. Brilliantly versatile. Terrifying. Invigorating.
Best living movie star - not quite the same - Tom Cruise. Of course he’s an action star but in the late 80’s and early 90’s he was it - The Firm, Rainman and A Few Good Men were proper Hollywood movies. (And hang on.. Jack Nicholson!)

Winslet was good but where has she gone?

Currently liking Olivia Coleman and Keeley.

Chalamet is indeed surprisingly good and I do think Hugh Grant is massively underrated. He’s actually better as a flawed bitter character than he is at fluffy roles he made his name with - and which I think make people underrate him.

Fiennes deserves mention.

In terms of raw acting ability, for me it’s Hugh Grant.

Currently watching “Lee” on Sky cinema. Also the Mare of Easttown on streaming is fantastic. Winslet has made a brilliant transition from beautiful young lead female character to beautiful older gritty complex character. She hasn’t ever stopped working, I expect like many older women in film she has found she’s been forced to move away from the blockbusters.

Gary Oldman for me too. His versatility is amazing.

He only really plays himself though really, doesn't he? Bit like David Jason and Tom Hanks (and Dustin Hoffman to a certain extent).

He plays a similar character, which isn’t actually like himself, he has an exceptional talent for comedy acting. But when you see him in things like the Truman Show, Bruce Almighty and True Crimes, he does show a lot more depth of character.

waltzingparrot · 04/05/2025 17:23

It seems we're living in a golden age of great acting unless it will forever be like this. So many excellent drama schools churning them out.

No idea, but I think Jodie Comer is a very compelling actor.

Her and Steven Graham are two actors who would persuade me to watch something by virtue of being in it.

Leonardo DiCaprio was so talented as a teen, find his style a bit same-y as an adult actor.

FlyPhobicDog · 04/05/2025 17:32

Oh yes, forgot about Olivia Coleman! She’s very good

I really liked that movie. It made me wish for a kindly nurturing father figure. It's like a comfort watch.

It was a nice, cosy, feel-good watch.

I saw Robert Lindsay play Richard III when I was about 12. I have never forgotten that.

I don't particularly like him but would agree with David Tennant. I've seen him in a few things and surprised at his versatility.

Bill Nighy for me.

Bill Nighy is so one note. Terrible actor!

Picklepower · 04/05/2025 18:17

Agree with most of these, especially Gary Oldman is fantastic. I can't agree on Stephen Graham though, he's fast becoming a national treasure but I just don't see it. And I've watched lots of stuff with him in, he always seems like a person acting, rather than the character. Gary Oldman never seems like someone who is acting.

Not sure why people think timothee chalamet is surprising good, he's been up and coming for years and is very talented. Other young ones I like are Florence pugh and Jodie comer

A more obscure one who I have loved for years is Anna camp. American actress in true blood, unbreakable Kimmy schmit, pitch perfect and I believe recently in You but I've never watched it

anon666 · 04/05/2025 18:29

I have to say I thought Alex Hassell was extraordinary in Rivals. Especially when you then see him interviewed because he is nothing like the character. I guess he has yet to do enough roles to qualify but I really hope he does.

I think Brad Pitt is incredibly talented, as well as his looks.

Tom Cruise is very good. I really think Hugh Jackman is great, too. Huge range including singing. Chris Pratt. Benedict Cumberbatch was incredible in Sherlock.

All the ones in those superhero films are incredible, the way they are able to be precisely choreographed. I'm probably dyspraxic - "uncoordinated" in old parlance, and have no conception of how they do it. 🤣🤣

I think most leading actors are incredibly talented tbh. I think that taoent is rarer and more of a skill than most of them acknowledge.
