Cate Blanchett for me; Blue Jasmine, Carol, Veronica Guerin, Notes on a Scandal… I could go on but I think that she’s just phenomenal. Who would you pick?☺️

Jared Harris.
I first noticed him in The Terror and have looked out for him ever since. He’s been in The Crown and Mad Men, raising the standard just by being there!

I’ve not seen him in much, but he was excellent in The Crown.

Coffeeishot · 04/05/2025 10:41

Split is a good film, James Mcavoy's TV stuff is good, if you like Irvine Welsh, James Mcavoy Is excellent in Filth.

I agree. He is incredible in The Terror. His performance moved me greatly. He should have won all the awards going for that role.

Oh and he's excellent in Mad Men too. Love that series.

Jodie Comer

Leonardo DC

Oh absolutely Jodie. She is incredible. If anyone gets the chance to see her on stage for Primary Facie...it's mind blowing. Thanks Ripley, I would have her at the top of my list. She's wonderful.

boobot1 · 04/05/2025 10:13

Yeah agree. Still think he was the best heathcliffe.

It’s the grand Budapest hotel for me

ThisHangrySheep · 04/05/2025 11:07

Colman Domingo especially in Sing Sing (I may have cried quite a bit)

Namechange032025 · 04/05/2025 11:12

So many good ones here but for all his amazing performances Anthony Hopkins would win

ItGhoul · 04/05/2025 11:15

The two best performances I’ve ever seen live on stage were both by Kenneth Branagh, twenty years apart.

unsync · 04/05/2025 11:19

Gary Oldman is definitely one of the greats of his generation. Him and KST in Darkest Hour were just sublime. Tinker Tailor, I could watch it over and over, such a great supporting cast too. Quite partial to a bit of Tom Hardy too. Kate Winslet is always watchable as is Emily Blunt, but I do like Meryl Streep. Her and Clint Eastwood in Bridges of Madison County was just heartbreaking. Everything I see it, I want her to leave with him. And in Out of Africa too, she's very versatile.

Bonjovispyjamas · 04/05/2025 11:23

Tom Hanks
Sandra Bullock
Jodie Foster
Kate Winslet

Derrymum123 · 04/05/2025 11:24

Stephen Graham for me. Absolutely brilliant in everything that he does.

BrandyandGinger · 04/05/2025 11:29

Andrea Riseborough has been exceptionally good in everything I've seen her in.

CurlewKate · 04/05/2025 11:31

Michael Sheen. Olivia Coleman.

WinterFoxes · 04/05/2025 11:33

Best live performance I've ever seen was Mark Strong as Eddie in A View From The Bridge.

tramtracks · 04/05/2025 09:50

Gary Oldman. Lesley Manville (especially in ‘Mum’)

(coincidentally they used to be married to each other)

I adore Lesley Manville. She's so versatile. She can play power-crazed sex goddess or downtrodden suburban housewife and everything between.

Rainbowchicken · 04/05/2025 11:40

Sean Bean

Titasaducksarse · 04/05/2025 11:41

James Mcavoy, Olivia Coleman, Antony Hopkins.

ShatnerssBasoon · 04/05/2025 11:47

Sam Neill. I think he is great in every film. I love Dean Spanley and The Hunt for the Wilderpeople

Jewel1968 · 04/05/2025 11:48

Gosh so many named on this thread are phenomenal. I might add Cillian Murphy to the list and Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleason. Florence Pugh and Viola Davis. It's impossible question to answer really

GlitchStitch · 04/05/2025 11:54

Woody Harrelson- he's exceptional in everything but he doesn't really seem to get much recognition.

Dominic West- so versatile, his performance as Fred West was chilling and it actually put me off him as an actor for quite a while as I was so creeped out by him!

Josh O'Connor- another one who is really versatile, God's Own Country was a masterpiece.

I love Sam Neill. He is ridiculously attractive and well into his seventies. Love his Instagram. He seems very grounded.
