Hoping some hidden gems might be found!

Tonight I saw A Woman of No Importance. It's a monologue performed by Patricia Routledge. I think it's from the 80s? Anyway, what I thought was a bit of satire really shone a light on loneliness and what a life ends up as, or can end up as. Also, PR didn't half know how to deliver a monologue! I'd pretty much only known her as Hyacinth Bucket.

I'm going to say Hex

Only because no one seems to have heard about it when I mention it ever
I loved that programme. But would love to hear other people who love it!

raysan · 30/04/2025 00:28

Loved Flash Forward but i think it ended on a cliffhanger with no season 2, or 2nd season was slated so i never found out what happened.

Lie to me about detectives using micro expressions to solve crimes. Normal detective series but it was reslly compelling. Cannot find it now

CraftyNavySeal · 30/04/2025 00:31

Pushing Daisies. Quirky supernatural detective show. Loved it but it was cancelled after 2 seasons!

Julia. Sarah Lancashire as Julia Child, David Hyde Pierce as her husband, Bebe Neuwirth as her best friend. Loads of other great people in it and the production is terrific.

We studied this in English Lit in the 80s/90s. Brilliant writing. Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads if I recall?

Some of my lesser known favourites (in no way similar to your OP, or indeed to each other) are:

Smash - about the production of a broadway musical about Marilyn Monroe

Stath Lets Flats - hilariously awkward comedy about a Greek Cypriot letting agent

Younger - absolute trash but strangely addictive series from the makers of Sex & the City, about a 40 year old woman posing as a 26 year old to get back into work after being a SAHM.

Fisk - Australian series about a bumbling female lawyer, she’s brilliant and the supporting characters are all hilarious too.

TheOtherAgentJohnson · 30/04/2025 00:49

I like Fisk too.

Roger And Val Have Just Got In was sublime, but I know hardly anyone who's seen it.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is a masterpiece.

I have a soft spot for She-Hulk, which everyone hated, but I thought was good fun (if a bit of a mess).

HotCrossBunplease · 30/04/2025 00:50

I second Smash. Katherine McPhee was great in it.

Party People a UK drama about SpAds about 15 years ago. Had a This Life vibe to it.

HotCrossBunplease · 30/04/2025 00:50

Oh yes, I enjoyed She-Hulk too!

HotCrossBunplease · 30/04/2025 00:51

And Miss Marvel.

iZombie was fab.

HRTQueen · 30/04/2025 00:53

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia- it’s absolutely hilarious

Fisk she is so awkward great characters

Here We Go - it’s very funny surprised it’s not more popular

Ashipcalleddignity · 30/04/2025 00:55

Crazyhead was a bit of a UK Buffy. Fantastic show, I was gutted it was never picked up.

Not2identifying · 30/04/2025 00:56

Rizolli and Isles - American detective programme, 2 female leads.

monktasmic · 30/04/2025 00:58

Families.

Pandimoanymum · 30/04/2025 01:00

I loved the Talking Heads monologues, they were so poignant and there was always so much more being said in what was NOT being said, if that makes sense!
I always enjoy Julia Davis comedies, I’m not sure if they’re not popular but they have very dark humour and sometimes things that some people might think are inappropriate, so they’re not for everyone. The well known one is Nighty Night, but Camping was great as well. And Hunderby/ Hummanby ( can’t quite remember the name!)

EmeraldRoulette · 30/04/2025 01:02

Houdini & Doyle

imagine if Harry Houdini and Arthur Conan Doyle got together and solved crimes.... Yes, it's a bit out there. And it's really fun. And they have a woman police detective. I haven't checked on the history of that one. But it was such a fun show. I think it's a shame it only got one season.

my favourite episode explored the myth of Spring heeled Jack.

That was really popular and won awards.

Thank you for mentioning the monologue, A Woman of No Importance, performed by Patricia Routledge.
I had never heard of it so I looked it up and watched it on YouTube.
It was so well done, very poignant, I'm glad I watched it.
My DPs used to faithfully watch Keeping Up Appearances.
My mum particularly liked the character Hyacinth Bucket, and Patricia Routledge's portrayal of her.
It was lovely to read that Dame Katherine Patricia Rutledge is doing well at 96!

Avonia · 30/04/2025 04:04

Patriot on Amazon Prime - spectacularly clever dark comedy/drama. I assume the title puts some people off, but it's not what you expect and is possibly my favourite series ever.

Tutorpuzzle · 30/04/2025 04:32

‘Detectorists’ and ‘This Country.’ Both on iplayer.

Beautifully written comedies that I can watch over and over.

Also agree about ‘Talking Heads.’ Patricia Routledge is brilliant.

I’ve just looked this up on google and it looks good, but I notice it only has two seasons, does it have a proper resolution at the end or was it suddenly cancelled?

frogshat · 30/04/2025 04:48

Monkey Dust! Extremely dark animated comedy series. It’s brilliant but you do have to have a particularly dark sense of humour.

I feel I must ask, is your username in relation to the topper of a well-dressed frog or has the frog opened his bowels?

P.s. thanks for the recommendation

The Leftovers. Loved that show.

OP the Patricia Routledge monologue was wonderful. Strangely i was talking to my DH about this just a couple of days ago. Fabulous.

notsureyetcertain · 30/04/2025 04:57

Hebburn
I thought it was hilarious, Lisa Mcgrillis, Neil Grainger and Victoria Elliot were fantastic in it.

I also enjoyed Touch with Kiefer Sutherland which ended quite suddenly.

And Devious Maids
