Hoping some hidden gems might be found!

Tonight I saw A Woman of No Importance. It's a monologue performed by Patricia Routledge. I think it's from the 80s? Anyway, what I thought was a bit of satire really shone a light on loneliness and what a life ends up as, or can end up as. Also, PR didn't half know how to deliver a monologue! I'd pretty much only known her as Hyacinth Bucket.

Oh, Perception! I liked that too. I wonder if it's still available anywhere.

Perception is on Disney Plus as is Lie to me mentioned by @raysan

‘Detectorists’ and ‘This Country.’ Both on iplayer.

Beautifully written comedies that I can watch over and over.

Also agree about ‘Talking Heads.’ Patricia Routledge is brilliant.

Aren't those both massively popular? I enjoyed This Country and have tried the Detectorists as everyone seems to love it but I've not been able to get I to it

I used to watch a lot of late night stuff when Channel 4 was new that no one else seems to know about but I can't remember any names now

Firefly - so sad that it only got one season and a film (Serenity) but beautifully written stories and great characters

I put Firefly too! Absolutely love it, such a brilliant show. I’ve met most of the cast too! I have to say Nathan Fillion is such a wonderful human being - I’ll watch anything with him in it after having met him.

HotCrossBunplease · 30/04/2025 12:11

Carnival Row, Baker Street Irregulars and The Nevers.

MrsSkylerWhite · 30/04/2025 12:14

Loved the Savages in the 90s, with Victoria Hamilton, Marcus Brigstocke and Geoffrey Palmer. Only had 1 series.

BuffetTheDietSlayer · 30/04/2025 12:18

Farscape
Hemlock grove

HarperStern · 30/04/2025 12:21

There are some highly regarded and well known programmes on this thread... I was obsessed with By The Sword Divided, historical drama about the English civil war, ran to two series.

HarperStern · 30/04/2025 12:22

Excited to find another person who watched Hex 😂.

Do look for some of the other monologues by Alan Bennet - IIRC, Bed among the lentils, A chip in the sugar, can’t remember all the titles but they were all brilliant.
We saw one as a stage performance by Maggie Smith - it was wonderful.

Re TV shows, I love The Detectorists!

Edited

Was one title “A cream cracker under the settee”?

PuppyMonkey · 30/04/2025 12:23

Apple TV + have load of shows that are fabulous but probably not that many people have subscription so they’re missing some gems.

Silo
Dope Thief
Severance
Shrinking
Slow Horses

Honestly just get Apple TV. Not an employee. Grin

Crazyhead was a bit of a UK Buffy. Fantastic show, I was gutted it was never picked up.

I absolutely loved this!

icebearforpresident · 30/04/2025 12:26

The Last Man On Earth, it’s on Prime video.

Will Forte thinks he is the only survivor of the apocalypse (what the apocalypse was I don’t actually remember) and eventually finds a few others to form a group with. However it’s a comedy so has none of the ‘rival group’ stories you would expect in a show about surviving the apocalypse and has some big names in it -Jason Sudekis, Will Ferrel, Fred Armisan all pop up for a few episodes and the main cast includes Kristin Schall, January Jones and Mary Steenbergen. It was cancelled after 4 seasons on a major cliffhanger.

Also on the theme of the apocalypse, Station Eleven. It’s based on the book of the same name (which is a must read!) where most of the human population has been wiped out by a flu virus (it started filming just before Covid!) and we follow a group of survivors over decades. It stars Mackenzie Davis, Himesh Patel, Danielle Deadwyler plus loads of actors you’ll recognise but can’t quite place. It it had came out before the pandemic or even now I think it would have been one of those shows everyone was talking about but because it came out towards the end of 2021 so everyone probably avoided it! It was in one of the paid subscriptions you get through prime video, if it’s still there and you can get a free trial it’s worth it.

Is this an Alan Bennet play? I think I heard it on BBC sounds or on Audible

It was mid-70s I watched it and loved it as a kid.

Yes it was 76 , I loved it after reading the book all 6 episodes are on you tube just now

CurlySueAndBillToo · 30/04/2025 12:41

The cockfields. Sad more episodes and series weren’t made. Just light and easy to watch if you’re going through difficult times. Similarly, last tango in Halifax. Watching that made me fall in love with Yorkshire and Sarah Lancashire brilliant as ever.

ghostyslovesheets · 30/04/2025 12:49

Cougar Town - very silly and made me laugh

also with Courtney Cox - Dirt which didn’t last long but I enjoyed

possibly my favourite obscure one season wonder is The Fades which I think is still on I player

HunterAngel · 30/04/2025 13:11

Grimm. Ran for five season although the fifth wasn’t great, I think the writers were on strike then. Basically imagine the stories told by the Grimm Brothers were based on real events and fairy tale creatures (called Wesen) actually exist; so called Grimms are the only humans that can see their true nature. Grimms are tasked with hunting down the ‘bad ones’. Main character is a Grimm who’s also a detective so ends up investigating increasingly weird murders. Worth watching just for Monroe, the Wesen who ends up being the Grimms Yoda even though he just wants to do his Pilates and mend clocks

The Change - it's on catch up. Bridget Christie, a motorbike and a small town. Not to mention the eels.

I also liked Flash Forward but it was different to the book.

Resident Alien - an Alien comes to earth, kills the local Dr and takes over the Dr's practice and home. Humans can't see his real form, well most of them can't, one boy can.

The Change isn’t unpopular; it’s much talked about and gets very good reviews. Personally I think it’s a bit rubbish though.

Orphan Black!

Absolutely incredible and ended perfectly. I don’t know anyone else who’s watched it and you should!

I was going to say the same! One of my all time favourites. From the opening scene i was hooked. The show gets wilder (and more crazy!) as it goes along. Tatiana Maslany is brilliant.

Throwingitallaway24 · 30/04/2025 13:39

Barry is absolutely phenomenal and I never hear anyone else mention it

TonTonMacoute · 30/04/2025 13:45

Actually having mentioned Love Soup that's one I'd recommend that not many people seem to have seen. Also starring Tamsin Greig and written by David Renwick who is very clever at weaving different plot lines together

Is that the one where she's learning to drive? At one point she gets hijacked by a bank robber during one of her lessons!

I loved Flowers, totally bonkers drama by Will Sharpe, on Channel 4.

Also Black Books from way back, again with Tamsin Grieg

hairyunicorn · 30/04/2025 13:46

Unreal - Constance Zimmer is amazing. def one to watch

Yes! with Thora Hird, who was brilliant.

Myblueclematis · 30/04/2025 08:35

Yes, I really liked this, especially the episode with the horse.

The only other person I know who has watched it was a work colleague.

Roisin Conaty is also in Man Down with Greg Davies, I don't know anyone at all who has seen this. I've watched it several times, some of the episodes are so funny.

‘Simon Bridges’ is our go to random name for anyone. And Dom the big bottomed guru makes me laugh every time.
