Does anyone get up at 5am?

I’m thinking of joining the 5am club.

Honestly, I would get so much done if I got up at 0500. I’d get my chores done before work, get the gym earlier, a bit of quiet time with a coffee and I think it would make a big difference to my time management.

The only thing is I need a lot of sleep, so I’d need to go to bed at 2100 (I go to ged now at 2200 and get up most days at 0600)

If you get up early please tell me about your routine, body clock, what you get done and how you handle it.

I used to but don’t anymore more as dc is 2 yo.

I loved it the peace and quiet and knowing I was up before the city (I live in London - it’s never quiet). The early morning quiet is very different to a 9pm quiet.

I either used to start work very early (and leave early) or do a gym class. Weekends I’d chill and have a leisurely coffee. It’s particularily great in summer!

To be honest because I was so fit healthy and active at the time I didn’t change much in terms of sleep routine as I didn’t feel I needed it

Rainydaysandwellybobs · 20/04/2025 20:50

I have been getting up at 4.45am for around 20 years now.
I clean the house before work so we can come home, eat and relax (on the nights kids don't have hobbies! )
I have been off work this week and we are still up by 5am because our bodies are used to it.

greengreyblue · 20/04/2025 20:51

Oooh no! Anything before 6am is night! 🤣
If you live alone you might be able to get to sleep at 9 but I’d be woken up by DD21 or DH. I go to bed around 10 to read/ watch tv, asleep by 11 normally, alarm at 6.45.

When our two oldest chikdren were young and I was physically fit I got up at 5 a.m.
It was super efficient.
We had full-time jobs and I usually had the housework and food prep for tea done by 8 a.m.

BCBird · 20/04/2025 20:53

Yes. It's exhausting. I don't do any chores I.just sit there feeling sorry for myself before going to shower at 5.40. Need loads of time to come round gradually in the morning. By Thursday I'm.dragging my feet. Rope others in to do chores if anyone else is there. Don't underestimate the effect an hour earlier might have on you physically.

Love this. This is making me feel like I need to re join the 5am club!

No I personally don’t see any benefit to getting up that early. I get up at 0630 and that’s early enough, go to the gym, home in time for the school run and get ready for work.

No point doing chores at 5am because I’ve still to clean the kitchen, do laundry, hoover etc after dinner each night. I’d rather go to bed with a clean house than get up super early to get it done and I say that as someone who prefers the morning.

Globules · 20/04/2025 20:55

I get up at 5am weekdays and either run or do weights.

I fall asleep around 9.30pm.

I don't do this on holidays, so Tuesday morning is going to be a killer. It's also much easier in the summer months

Sammysquiz · 20/04/2025 20:57

Noise really carries in my house so it’s hard to do early chores as it wakes everyone else up!

Mingenious · 20/04/2025 20:58

I’m often awake at that time, but get up? No.

Welliguessso · 20/04/2025 20:59

I get up at around 530 am. I don’t set an alarm it seems to be my usual
waking time. I like it as I’m able to have some peace and quiet before the day begins and I like to go for a walk as our house backs onto a lovely field and stream.

BabySocksNeverStayOn · 20/04/2025 20:59

Yes... Everyday at 5am. I bloody love it. I can please myself for at least 2/3 hours before anyone else gets up. Exercise, clean or just read a book.

Strokethefurrywall · 20/04/2025 20:59

I’m ups at 5am fairly regularly, either to run, spin or train boxing. Sometimes I’ll get up that early if I’ve got an especially good book I want to read, and I sit for an hour with a coffee.
5am makes no difference really, it used to be time I could spend in the quiet by myself (or exercising) but 11 year old also likes waking at that time so I’m never on my own.
Id only wake up at that time to do something for myself, I’m not doing chores. I’m either training or reading!

BatchCookBabe · 20/04/2025 21:02

Oh dear God no. Shock 5.00am is the middle of the night.

A comfortable waking up time for me is 8.00am to 8.30am. If I get up at 7am or earlier I feel tired and fatigued during the day. I don't 'wake up' as the day goes on, I just feel perma tired all day.

GreenWriter · 20/04/2025 21:05

I did this for a while and used the time for quiet time for me (cuppa, yoga / meditate, journal) but my dc (now 6), who has always been an early riser, seemed to get wise to it & started waking even earlier, so it became pointless. I also wound up feeling very tired & grouchy by 4pm / 5pm - even tho I’m usually in bed by 9.30pm and am fit and healthy.

I would probably do it again as I did enjoy the time and quiet in the morning before the day, but I would think it’s easier to do once child / children are older and not so dependant on you.

Zanatdy · 20/04/2025 21:06

I get up at 5ish daily. My alarm is set for 5.15, but i’m usually awake before then. Not sure if peri menopause, but I sleep so badly these days. I tend to watch some breakfast TV, then do some indoor exercise. Take the dog out around 6.30, usually in the office for 8.30am. I can’t image now waking up 45 mins before leaving the house. I quite enjoy that quiet time of the day. Usually asleep by 10, not a night owl these days. I used to dream of long lie’s in when the kids were teens, little did I imagine that i’d have terrible sleep.

Mrspatmoresapprentice · 20/04/2025 21:07

I do. 20-30 minutes to drink enough coffee to wake up, then straight in to my workout (at home. I definitely couldn’t be arsed to leave the house and go to the gym! ) Workout done by 6.30am and I’m ready to sort the dogs and start my day. Get a few jobs done, get ready and leave for work by 8.15am. Bed by 10pm.

HopeForTheBest · 20/04/2025 21:08

I'm up between 5 and 5.30am every week day but that's just because we all need to be up and leave quite early so I just do regular morning stuff. I've got so used to it now, I don't need an alarm clock any more.
i think your body eventually adjusts, although I won't be trying a 4am wake up any time soon😁

sociallydistained · 20/04/2025 21:12

Before my son I was up at 5 to go to the gym before work 3x a week but have struggled to do the morning workouts since having him. I do get up at 5.50 on work days though in order to shower get ready and sit with a coffee by myself before getting my son up an hour later... I'm thinking of making it earlier but I will struggle with going to bed early either way 🤦🏻‍♀️

user1469569516 · 20/04/2025 21:15

I'm up at 5 am every day.
My routine is:
5 to 5.10 am make bed and shower.
5.10 to 5.30 am clean cat litter boxes and feed our 6 cats.
5.30 to 5.50 am make and eat breakfast.
5.50 to 6 am wash breakfast dishes
6 to 6.20 am dry hair
6.20 to 6.25 am dress
6.30 am leave for work to arrive at 7.
I'm a teacher, so use the time before classes begin to prepare my lessons.

Bedtime for me on weekday is 10.30 pm.
At weekends, I'll sleep until 7.30 am which is when my body will naturally wake.

TheAmusedQuail · 20/04/2025 21:16

I do. I get up at 5, work for an hour between 6 & 7, then wake the sproglet up & get ready for school and do the school. Then start work again at 9.

I hate it. BUT it's a good solid hour of work. Still love a lie in, but my body tries to wake up from 5.30ish on due the routine.

I should be in bed by 10, but I'm really bad at going to bed and am often up until midnight.

BeneathTheSea · 20/04/2025 21:19

I'm up at 4.50 am, for work.
I do finish my shifts earlier, but as l get older I'm feeling more tired.
Problem is I'm on in the go literally all day and still busy in evenings, my home routine is still similar as when l worked 9 -5, except I'm up and out a lot earlier.
I should be asleep now.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 20/04/2025 21:25

I am usually at work for 4.15-4.30am. It's nice to be up and about when the world is peaceful, and nobody is around to bother you, and it's still quite cool at this time of year. I make the most of it by getting 250 cows milked by myself. At the beginning of my rota, I can go to bed at 10 and still be up on time for going to work. At the end of it, I struggle, and sometimes end up in bed, exhausted, at 8 (but I do have a very physical job).

In terms of your body clock, you will get used to it, providing that you don't lie in bed and think, "Five more minutes!" You have to be really disciplined to get up at that time. However, do take a break (e.g. once a week) from getting up early to catch up on any necessary sleep, otherwise you'll be the grouchiest person in town. It's nice to not have to wake up to an alarm, but you might still find yourself wide awake at the crack of dawn, having had a luxurious lie-in until the wild hour of 6.00am on a Saturday off or something.

Nourishinghandcream · 20/04/2025 21:29

I used to when I was working as I liked to be in the office early (6am start was fine with our management). Meant I had finished work (and missed the school traffic) while others still had a couple of hours to do.
After we were relocated, I still got up at the same time but the longer commute meant I wasn't starting work until nearer 8:30am which resulted in a much longer day (and was directly instrumental in my taking early retirement at 57).

Nowadays, I can still get woken up at 5am but it is by the Ddogs so I go down, let them out and then settle down on the sofa for a nap with Ddogs happily lying beside me.🙂

I don’t because whatever time I’m gaining in the morning I’m loosing in the evening, I want my time in the evening to wind down and relax and not have to go to bed at 9pm especially as I don’t get home until around 7pm
