I've been to the GN once in 2019. Was okay. Prefer Cheltenham. I've been to the Festival twice. In 1992 I did the whole three days. I grew up across the field from Geoff Hubbards yard. He was very kind to me as was Ferdy Murphy. I was invited to all their Open Days.
Mr H used to name horses after local villages. I was there one day and asked why our village hadn't had a chance and he named one for me.
In Dec 1991 I was at Huntingdon. Ferdy arranged to take me into the Owners and Trainers Bar. Ferdys horse won ridden by a jockey I hadn't heard of called A Maguire. As AM walked past me I congratulated him. He very politely turned round and said "thankyou."
Gold Cup 1992 Adrian Maguire was riding Cool Ground. I backed him. And he won a photo at 40/1.
In 2003 Ferdy brought one horse from Yorkshire to Cheltenham. I backed Truckers Tavern at 66/1 and he came second.

Has betting on horse races declined? I do hope so. Horrible cruel industry but the only way to stop it is for it to stop making money.
I remember when I was a kid in the 80s the Grand National was a big event in my (poverty stricken) House. That and Miss World. Thankfully my own kids probably don't even know either exist.

I've always put a small bet on as a sentimental thing. It's something we did with grandparents many years ago. 50p each way. I don't gamble on anything else at all.

After watching today I'm ashamed at my ignorance of the dangers involved. In tears at the way a horse landed. I cannot imagine it will survive. What a horrendous 'sport'.

Miss World is an blast from the past , the idea of women being judged for how they looked in a swimsuit, how much they wanted world peace while they trained to be a medic and they were judged on their purity back in the day.
