And what a glorious day for it. I’ve chosen vanillier, minella cocooner, and stumptown 🐎

I'm not a fan of horse racing nor any sport that involves an animal .
Before anyone says about eating meat , don't do that either .

Also pigs are more intelligent than horses.

Doesn’t matter. Pigs are 2nd class citizens according to these posters

The difference being people choose to take the risk…. The animals do not.

Animals don't make choices about anything humans do with and to them, from being eaten, to being ridden, to being kept as pets. I don’t personally believe animals are equal to humans, or get to have choices, but many people who say they do seem to be quite good at picking and choosing which choices they think animals should get to make.

Offtobuttonmoontovisitmrspoon · 05/04/2025 13:17

Why assume that the people that are against horse racing eat animals? I’m sure that some do but most won’t. For me it’s the same, killing is killing.

It’s not acceptable to jump on threads and post their views on it. I didn’t ask that. Make your own threads

You don't get to control what people post in reply , they can post their view if it conflicts with yours then that is the debate ..

Do you think a jockeyless horse keeps running because it SO loves to run?
It carries on because as a herd animal it sees the other horses as safety , and even injured it will try to keep with their herd . Until capture or injury stops it.

I am not a fan

Oblomov25 · 05/04/2025 13:26

Only 1 person has named a horse!
Dh too thought of Iroko.

ParrotsAteThemAll · 05/04/2025 13:26

Also backing the banning of it and hoping all those poor horses make out alive today.

None. I am praying every horse gets home safe and sound. I hate everything to do with the racing industry.

Agreed. It's utterly horrible.

But they’re not dying for entertainment. Your attitude is horrible.

They are dying for your personal food preferences!
Not actually any more important than for entertainment. Also the reason a creature is killed is irrelevant to the creature itself. And yes I do eat organic meat, ride horses and am all with good racing too.

Sorry your post got sidetracked in to an anti racing tirade!
I’ve backed I am Maximus just because we backed him last year and he won. And another one that I can’t remember the name of now- DC picked based on pictures of the horses 😆 The National is so much safer than it used to be. We will be watching later.

Erm ok. Animals die everyday 🤷🏻‍♀️

Don't be so fucking callous.

ginasevern · 05/04/2025 13:53

I eat a plant based diet and I'm also active in bringing an end to humans' exploitation of other living creatures in all forms. Moreover I have no inclination to line the pockets of the sort of scum that own race horses.

I've read all of this thread - it has 3 pages as I write - and I'm so pleased that lots of posters agree with you, as I do wholeheartedly.
A few years ago I was listening to our local radio, (I live on Merseyside and not too far from Aintree), and a renowned equine vet from Liverpool University's School of Vetinary Science was being interviewed.
People who support the National will say the horses must love it as they carry on running and jumping the fences even if the jockey has been unseated.
This vet shot this view down in flames. Horses are pack animals, he explained, and they carry on because they are following the herd.
And he also stated that horses' bodies are just not designed or built to jump high fences. Running, yes, high fences, no. Their torsos are very large compared to their legs which are thin and spindly. You do seem some refusing to jump at the National, but most do jump because they have been trained to, not because they want to.
The most common form of injury to horses in steeplechases is a broken leg, usually suffered when landing back on ground level after jumping a fence. The horse is nearly always destroyed as the structure of their legs render them almost impossible to mend.
Of course they will be very well looked after during their racing years - their owners, trainers, etc., want to monetise them massively!
And if horses enjoy racing so much, why do they have to be whipped so hard?
The Grand National.............a vile, vile race.
Shall we have bets on how many horses will die there this year?

Elderflower14 · 05/04/2025 13:56

I've backed Hewick and Duffle Coat... Mum has picked Threeunderthrufive...

Boredlass · 05/04/2025 13:58

Knew this would go the wrong way for you OP. Enjoy your bet. I have no issue with it

Oh dear OP, it was obvious that the 🥇😇would be jumping ( pun intended) all over this thread! We had one poster yesterday who claimed that a horse had been killed this year in the Grand National, oblivious that it hadn’t actually been run yet….

It’s not my favourite race, too much depends on luck rather than skill, but I would like Kandoo Kid to win as I have a lot of time for Harry Cobden.

@Allthegoodnamesarechosen its a 3 day event and a horse died the first day, so that poster was right.

Willy De Houelle (FR) killed on first day of the Grand National Meeting - Animal Aid

It is with nothing but horror and disgust that we report the death of another innocent animal at Aintree today. Willy De Houelle, just four years old, was killed in the second race today after suffering a horrific fall. The death toll of this barbaric...

Yes OP I've had a bet today... used to be my only annual gamble but haven't for the last few years so decided to start up again. I've picked 3 horses - 1 massive outsider 1 middle of the road and 1 fairly decent chance. Each way bet £15 in total! The bookies aren't going to be too bothered about my small amount of money!

These horses are bred for this, it's in their dna to run fast and a horse will let you know if it doesn't want to run, they're stubborn and large, if it didn't want to run it wouldnt! You see horses that refuse all the time!

It's dangerous for jockeys 🏇 too - are you all only concerned for the horse not the life of the jockeys?

I'm looking forward to it. Come on!!!!!
