I've just had the nastiest April fool whatsoever

Friend is on here but I'm sure she can cope with me being 'public'. And hello, my darling!

But phone went off middle of the night telling me childhood friend had died. Turns out this is nonsense. Isn't that a really cruel thing to do to someone? I was throwing up. I'm not sure what I'd gain from posting here just a bit of feather soothing and 'relax'. I don't want anyone to say they deserve a kicking I just think that was a horrible thing to do

OP posts:

Well, that isn’t funny, but throwing up seems like an overreaction Confused

I found a relative dead many years ago. No throwing up but I suffered an injury which required hospital investigation and treatment.

No doubt someone YOU would see that as an 'overreaction' but others have tended to be more understanding.

If it WAS the OP's friend who did this, they need their head checked.

I can't imagine anyone throwing up because someone has died. Unless it was because they were viewing the body.

It's been mocked too much on people saying the phrase "screaming, crying, throwing up" to be believable.

Just because you can't imagine it doesn't mean it can't affect other people. I have thrown up after bad news before and when I'm stressed in a more chronic way I feel permanently nauseous. It's just how some of us are wired and I guess I was just trying to point out that it's a bit off to imply someone is being melodramatic just because their physiological response to stress isnt the same as yours. I couldn't eat after a recent loss and yes, I did throw up quite a few times in the immediate days after getting the news.

FunDenimFatball · 01/04/2025 12:36

Death and pregnancy April Fools should be automatic you are no longer on my friend list who the hell jokes about these things

BunnyLake · 01/04/2025 12:38

Well if that friend is on here they should be very ashamed of themselves. They need to look deep inside themselves to work out why they thought that was funny.

‘Friend’, whoever you are, you sound broken, go see someone to figure out why you did this.

Really, @thankyounextplease? I’ve never thrown up at receiving news of a bereavement, but I know people react differently to shocks, and it doesn’t take a huge stretch of the imagination to see someone could have a severe reaction to a bad shock. You could just try.

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 01/04/2025 12:42

Was it a call or text? If so text I think it would count as malicious communications as the only aim was to cause upset. Report it to the police and see your ‘friend’ try to defend her humour.

BunnyLake · 01/04/2025 12:45

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 01/04/2025 11:55

I can't understand practical jokes. I never have been able to. Programmes like 'Beadle's About' just made me cringe myself inside out, feeling for all the people who got pranked (and I even hate the word 'pranked' - it's not a 'prank', it's upsetting someone because it's supposed to make them feel SO MUCH better when they realise they've been had).

Unsubtle, upsetting and juvenile. I'd cut contact with anyone who played a joke like this on me. (So if this is an April Fool, I'll have to leave Mumsnet...)

I despise practical jokes. The premis is nearly always to make sure the recipient is either worried, anxious, disappointed, troubled, humiliated, bewildered etc. The point is never about making someone feel good.

whynotwhatknot · 01/04/2025 12:47

i honestly doooont get whhy anyone would think tis was funny-my nan actually died on april 1st so i just cant imagine someone using ddeath as a joke

Sudden vomiting is a very common reaction to huge and sudden stress. It’s a very standard autonomous reaction. I’m amazed a fully grown adult doesn’t know this even if they haven’t experienced it themselves. Are you a fully grown adults?

KhakiBeer · 01/04/2025 12:48

Oh that's awful.

April Fool's jokes are meant to be light hearted and just leave you feeling a bit daft for believing it (Looking at you BBC and your 'spaghetti tree').

If your friend is reading the thread....
I hope you just pitched that horribly wrong and can find a way to make it up to OP. If your intention was to cause upset, then as it's after 12. if OP tells you to Foxtrot Oscar, she won't be joking.

People throw up from stage fright or interview nerves and no one thinks that’s odd so why should it be odd that someone throws up at out of the blue, shocking news, which could affect your nerves or adrenaline.

JudgeJ · 01/04/2025 12:50

OneAquaFatball · 01/04/2025 12:08

nobody who’s actually received one of those calls would ever think this was something to joke about. i hope your friend continues to live a life insulated from that kind of pain tbh as she’s gonna need it if she keeps throwing friends away like this

I would make sure that her circle of friends know what's she's done, people like this rely on anonymity to get away with things. April Fool is about pranks, I once caught my whole Year 10 form group and they were quite impressed, they're not about upsetting people.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 01/04/2025 12:50

Absolutely disgusting fool. They would be dead to me from now on.

Wildworldandteacakes · 01/04/2025 12:51

Jesus, that is disgusting, and way beyond any April fool's joke I have ever heard of. This is downright nasty, and not something to joke about whatsoever. I couldn't be friends with somebody like that.

Thelnebriati · 01/04/2025 12:51

Fuck me, I'd never get past that. I find it difficult to maintain relationships with people who lack a sense of good humour, or revel in cruelty.

BitOutOfPractice · 01/04/2025 12:53

Speaking as someone who was at a dear school friend’s funeral on Friday, that is really fucking unfunny.

As a ten year old child, my weird parents decided to 'april fool' me by pretending my step mum was pregnant, so i thought i would be getting a baby brother or sister... then after mid day they told me it was all an april fool's joke.

I look back now and see it as symbolic of how fucked up they were

I agree. Of course people can vomit from things that have shocked or caused them stress.

I felt like I was going to throw up when I found a massive credit card bill my (now) ex had ran up in our names. I had to really sit and calm myself down or I most definitely would have vomited.

Resilience · 01/04/2025 11:51

Simply not funny.

I’ve never liked the kind of humour that is about “winding people up” - it demonstrates a tendency towards liking upsetting/humiliating others.

Yes it’s just plain nastiness, with the thin cover of a “joke”, nope not a joke, just horrible.

FunDenimFatball · 01/04/2025 12:36

I'd add one to those. A "friend" of a friend allowed their child to buy one of those voice altering apps and phone people late at night with their number blocked to say things like they knew where where they (the victim) lived and they were going to break in. My friend is neither old nor frail but lives alone and actually called the police over it. "Friend" tried the "can't you take a joke" line. Needless to say the friendship has not lasted. Its shocking what people think is allowable.

SmoothEncounter · 01/04/2025 13:01

thankyounextplease · 01/04/2025 12:18

Throwing up? Really?

Shock and grief over the sudden unexpected loss of a loved one can result in various responses depending on your nervous system - some people freeze, some collapse, and yes some vomit. It’s a visceral response to a “threat” - body empties itself in preparation for flight/fight.

I was in a traumatic situation in a public place and several people either wet or soiled themselves as the danger level went up.

Don’t mock what you don’t understand.

Mischance · 01/04/2025 13:02

I think the OP is a April Fool in itself.

SuspiciousChipmunk · 01/04/2025 13:02

I can't imagine anyone throwing up because someone has died.

I can’t imagine someone being unable to imagine anyone throwing up because someone has died. But here you are!

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 01/04/2025 13:07

About as funny as announcing a fake pregnancy for April fools, how old is your friend, 8?
