I would happily see PMQs binned

I was thinking about this today but I just love seeing Badenoch struggle and always love Ed Davey standing as third.

Parliament has to be open and transparent. It's good for democracy.

Daddybegood · 02/04/2025 15:30

DuncinToffee · 02/04/2025 15:25

I recognise it as bullshit

Buy clearly you swallow other bullshit quite enthusiastically

Notonthestairs · 02/04/2025 15:32

The other thing is that there are cross party committees working very successfully.
They just aren’t given the same sort of coverage as PMQs which is just click bait.

I don’t think PMQs adds to transparency - it just sucks up attention.

placemats · 02/04/2025 15:32

My contribution to the tax. It's in my front hedge and have never seen it flower so early.

I should really post this in legal or somewhere else. I think my sister, who is non contactable and I value that, has died. She lives/lived in New York USA and I'm currently trying to establish whether or not she is alive. Googled for information and it's frightening to try and find recent death certificates in that I haven't a clue where to start.

This leads me on to Trump tarrifs. It's time to renegotiate custom union terms with the EU. I honestly believe there will be a collective sigh of relief throughout the UK and Northern Ireland.

Daddybegood · 02/04/2025 15:22

Very valid points Puggy, & agree with much of it
Strangely the debate has polarised the 7% of kids as the bad / priveleged / entitled guys who are not only responsible for the Dystopian state system but also for perpetuating it even tho many (particularly SEND) were those most failed by it.
This is a false & divisive narrative as is the general assumption that they are all loaded.
Aside from private evaluations for SEND (charged by health providers) I havnt been charged additional for any learning support but the reality is that the education system can only be properly funded from general or corporate taxation : cut during austerity & beyond by the Tories but now, in reality being perpetuated by Labour tax & spend decisions - tbh indistinguishable from the Tories - & the red meat of bashing some 5-18 year olds kids don't fool me

the red meat of bashing some 5-18 year olds kids don't fool me

I hope you are as exercised about the PIP cuts, @Daddybegood . That will have a far bigger negative impact on 682,000 (as of 2023) children once they reach 16 than VAT on PS fees.

Difficult situation. I hope you can resolve it without too much stress and heartache.
I totally agree about the EU.

So sorry to hear that. You could try asking on the Trump thread, US based posters might be able to help.

Was she a British citizen? If so could the British embassy help?

Notonthestairs · 02/04/2025 15:48

I was about to suggest the British Embassy too @placemats Do you have a last known address - I wonder if the police would be able to check on your behalf.
the Trump threads would definitely be a good place to ask for more local advice.

Edited

I am against the PIP cuts Pandora, and although they are different policies, there is a correlation in the cause, I.e. that Labour have caged themselves in with their tax & spend policy - unfortunately modelled on the Tories and their 11 failed attempts at a "New growth strategy"
Clearly we are in difficult times with a Trump administration supporting Putin & his ambition to damage western economies - so i understand the need to raise defence spending but we are only cutting our cloth tax wise due to self imposed restrictions from Reeves -

Yet you have come on to a wide ranging thread about politics purely to lambast us all, quite rudely and condescendingly at times, about VAT on PS fees. Why did you decide to do that? I am genuinely curious as to what you hoped to achieve.

BIossomtoes · 02/04/2025 16:05

Oh Lord, has the private school VAT issue found its way on to this thread despite the eleventy billion others dedicated to it? How fucking tedious.

So sorry to hear about your sister @placemats. Do the US police do welfare checks?

Erm - did I?
OK
But if you expect honest people, who respect human rights for their kids, to not bow down in your echo chamber, then don't be surprised if you become more misinformed - the result of which is very real damage to kids education
And anytime you do that - shouldn't you expect to be fairly lambasted?

Although I really don't think I have lambasted anyone - perhaps my answer on PIP was wrong for you

No, I actually agree with a lot of what you said in your last post.

But I genuinely wondered why you chose to come on to this thread when there are a ton of others specifically relating to VAT on PS fees. If there had been an ongoing discussion here, I could understand it. You haven't said why you chose to do that, if you don't want to, fair enough.

There is no echo chamber here, by the way. What there is is a lot of criticism of and disappointment with Labour as well as some agreement with some of its policies.

DuncinToffee · 02/04/2025 16:20

The echo chamber comment again Hmm

OK,
Well I didn't have an agenda, aside from being against the VAT policy, but no thread selection or strategy behind it.
And surely I've only done the same with some support & criticism of Labour

I may have hit a raw nerve & angered some unintentionally, but many are angered by what they see as an intentionally cruel policy

But I genuinely didn't set out to anger anyone - perhaps you should just ignore me

itsgettingweird · 02/04/2025 16:25

One of the 6 private schools in a 10 miles radius of me (4 shut during the Tory 14 years prior to this) one had a send unit that’s funded by echps and had just built and will be running from Sept a new send unit. 95% of these children are LA funded through an EHCP.

what’s not acceptable to me is that those lucky enough to get a space cost £100k a year per child at times and if the LA provided the same provisions it would be a lot cheaper.

the real scandal is all the special education schools shit down all those years ago in the name of “inclusion”.

“inclusion” was never thought through about whether it was right for the pupil to be in MS.

It’s always about the money.

Weirdly it was an echo chamber that I used to find informative & when it was against brexit/the Tories etc, it was a place that aligned with me
Some things still do but some of you have let yourself down a bit IMO

itsgettingweird · 02/04/2025 16:31

Daddy good as someone who’s work for many a decade in special ed I would say the issue is the send kids in private without EHCP line.

children who need an EHCP need an EHCP because they can’t access education without support.

yes, it’s wrong that MS schools can’t always meet all kids needs but if a kid needs an EHCP they aren’t attending private education perfectly well.

Already what me many primary’s and secondaries have built and/or are developing ARPs within their schools.

over the years these will become accessible to all who need them and I welcome that.

we don’t need to send children with mild enough send to get through school without and ehcp - private.

we need them to be able to access the support required on state facilities.

It is now a comment used by recent visitors to try and derail (or rather discredit) these threads

We all recognise that long running threads are echo chambers in a way.

You are welcome to continue to contribute to these thread beyond PS vat.

Blame the Warnock Report. We also followed the USA without the funds to implement inclusion properly.
