Labour have an advert with Farage and Badenoch's faces merged. Now, I am not a fan of that kind of campaigning but it is spot on.

I also read that more than 60 candidates standing for Reform are defectors from the Conservatives.

Where can I find this ad please?

I just find that sinister full stop. I wouldn’t persuade me to vote Labour. There are no alternatives either.

Thank you! It does illustrate the point well.

I suspect that hides quite a lot of facts about the issues with the screening though. Prostate screening is archaic and survival rates of thyroid cancer have not dropped despite more cases being found. So some people's wait times may drop but their treatment may not necessarily be better.

The detection and subsequent survival rates for people with pancreatic cancer are woeful. I was one of the lucky ones with a switched on GP and a local hospital trying out a fast track treatment for this cancer. Generally though in the UK the survival rate after 1 year for those diagnosed is 13%, which has hardly changed in years, and only 3 in 10 of those diagnosed get any sort of treatment - no surgery, no chemo, no radiation therapy.

Piggywaspushed · 06/04/2025 13:23

That's very troubling.

PandoraSox · 06/04/2025 13:27

Having had a think, I am not keen on that advert. Perhaps I am reading too much into it, but it has hints of something very unpleasant.

ETA this article which explains why I find it troubling:

All very childish and negative, it would be better if Labour focused on what they doing and what they plan to do...

Apart from tinkering, so far very little... our local Lab MP couldn't even get the Tamar Bridge Toll increase stopped.... a real financial burden on people who have to cross the Tamar for work and NHS appointments in Derriford.

& nothing what so ever on a new Dental contract either.

itsgettingweird · 06/04/2025 16:10

notonthestairs I absolutely agree with you re regional differences.
I think it speaks so well for why we have areas of deprivation. Areas of poor healthcare will lead to so much of this. I would imagine this then adds to less people from these areas going into medicine die to familial disenfranchisement with education and this reduces numbers locally working in local healthcare and increases social mobility - so the middle classes move away.

I wish we’d start looking outwards as a country to why things do t work rather than constantly trying to paper over cracks

Tariffs are an irrelevance at this point. There is no going back to where we came from.

The US in 2025 isn't the US of 1945. It's ploughing it's own furrow and has to be left to that. (It's not "America first", it's "America only").

Global economics have changed irreparably. Any and all effort should now go into moving to the new world order as quickly as possible. We really shouldn't be trying to reshoe a horse as the automobile age dawns.

And as the world economy transforms, it will naturally reshape defence strategies.

However in a country and message board that seemingly refuses to accept the High Street died years ago, I fear we will see fucktonnes of money trying to prop up a future which doesn't exist.

They’ve done quite a lot more than tinkering. I don’t agree with it all, but to deny it is either deliberately ignoring or lack of knowledge. Have a look here. https://pledgeprogress.co.uk

I agree it does have overtones that are unpleasant. Placing them side by side would get the message over just as well.

Trump is doing a Truss

It’s worse. With Truss there was always the 1922 Committee/Graham Brady lurking.

Trump’s an absolute monarchist.

Health workers to go door-to-door under new NHS plans to tackle sickness rates across England

A community health worker will be allocated 120 homes to visit every month

It's an interesting ideal that they have trialled in Pimlico.

"Under the model, a community health worker is given a patch of 120 homes and typically makes monthly visits to see if help is needed.
Results from a pilot in Westminster suggested it could achieve a 10 per cent drop in hospital admissions over a year and a 7 per cent fall in visits to A&E.
Dr Matthew Harris, a public health expert at Imperial College London who has worked in Brazil, where the programme cut deaths from common heart conditions by more than a third, had the idea of bringing it to the UK."

(from the Times)

SerendipityJane · 07/04/2025 12:40

Results from a pilot in Westminster suggested it could achieve a 10 per cent drop in hospital admissions over a year and a 7 per cent fall in visits to A&E.

What is that in grown up money ? How does it compare to the cost of

a community health worker is given a patch of 120 homes and typically makes monthly visits to see if help is needed

?

The reason I ask is I wonder in how many of the 120 homes the help that is needed is well known, just not there ?

dontcallmelen · 07/04/2025 12:40

Think they did the same in Cuba not sure if still happens but certainly had a big impact with the model of more preventative interventions.

PandoraSox · 07/04/2025 12:51

Is it just a random 120 homes or more targeted than that?

Notonthestairs · 07/04/2025 12:54

"The reason I ask is I wonder in how many of the 120 homes the help that is needed is well known, just not there ?"

A good question I don't know the answer to.
Given they are targeting 'frequent fliers' in areas of deprivation I imagine the problems are known but that help hasn't been offered or - the suggestion is - sought. But if, as reported, part of the service is to encourage health check ups and address any barriers to that (like accessing appropriate transport) and with a monthly check in to follow up I think that must be beneficial in the longer term - but no enough detail in the reporting to know.

Notonthestairs · 07/04/2025 13:04

Wes Streeting said that they would focus initially on the top areas of deprivation and those that have had to use A&E a high proportion of times.

It seems to be broader than health care as it will offer or enourage use of services related to housing & poverty which also impact/influence health.

DuncinToffee · 07/04/2025 13:05

James O'Brien had a call in on it on LBC, I haven't listened to it but maybe it would answer some of the questions?
