The world population is 8 billion,
The USA is only 340 million.
Maybe there are other countries that other countries can export with and trade with.

Zonder · 02/04/2025 19:21

I had a lot of catching up to do on this thread just now. All good - it reminded me why I love these threads and all the regulars on here.

Hershey's chocolate .
Californian wine.
American beer.

American goods - any designer brand or car.
Celebrity perfumes.

I have to stick with Bruce Springsteen though, been in my life for decades (his music obvs ) and
he is one of the good guys.

Jack Daniels? DH bought some Japanese whiskey instead this week. I thought he would laugh at my suggestion to stop buying JD but he wholeheartedly agreed

Brewdog is off the menu as well, both for their treatment of their workers and their support of Musk

Canada has gone big on boycotting orange juice made from Floridian oranges as well as traditional US spirits - but EU/UK oranges for juice probably don't come so far

Zonder · 02/04/2025 19:24

I do quite like Californian wine but wouldn't miss Hershey's or American beer.

I think Springsteen is allowed.

Hershey's tastes like vomit to me. I read somewhere that there is a reason it tastes like that for some people, but can't remember why now.

DuncinToffee · 02/04/2025 19:27

I don't like Hershey either, or Reeces.

Funny how some poster’s scruples evidently do not extend as far as abandoning US TV shows/movies…

Butyric acid. I can't remember why it's in the chocolate but it's the reason why vomit (and dried parmesan from the 70s) smell like vomit! (and also tge reason why bicarb neutralises the smell)

Yes, I think that's it.

There is a reason why it tastes sour. I can’t remember the exact details other than their manufacturing produces an acid which tastes like vomit.

Notonthestairs · 02/04/2025 19:44

X post 🍫 😁

N Zealand and Aus wines are equally good.

I can attest re bursaries, sadly.

We stopped contributing for another child at our DC’s school - the same amount as the VAT increase (6k per annum). We were evidently not alone in doing so.

I remember you mentioning that child had to leave the school in the end. Such a shame that something could not have been worked with the school so that the child could have stayed on.

But I suppose it does demonstrate that private schools are businesses and not charities.

I don’t know why we don’t see much of it over here but Canadian wine is very good too. Not to mention the whiskey.

Yes, that’s right.

It actually caused a rift at home at the time with DH.

You haven’t said you have.

If you were, you'd have seen that we watch K and C dramas... Also UK made stuff and a lot of other foreign language stuff - Dutch, German, French. Your crystal ball needs the cracks taking out.

Very true.

I've been watching Finnish programmes as I've been learning the language. I exercise early in the morning, I'm out of the house just after 6 to ride but as I'm a pensioner I also have plenty of time to walk, garden, knit, read and volunteer for wildlife surveys as well as posting on mumsnet.

pointythings · 02/04/2025 20:36

Spotted that last X post just before it was deleted and may I just say that I also read (actual books) a lot.

Personal comments really aren't in the spirit of the thread.

The only Finnish I know is the bit that I've picked up from watching Suurmestari (yet another version of Taskmaster, of course, for those not familiar). It's such a complicated language and everything takes forever to say thanks to all the sneaky syllables!

I don't know Finnish, but being Dutch I am fluent in four languages (and of course there's always subtitles). I grew up with Dutch TV, so pretty much everything was subtitled. Once we got cable we had more options - it really helped my German and French A-level equivalents to watch those channels. Some really good crime shows around in those days, anyone remember Derrick?
