Holiday sorted

We managed to sort our holiday. We are now going to Spain instead. It looks much more fun . And the times are better to. We were not overly worried about tunisa in the end. But it just felt negative with all the communication difficulties. And it really stressed me out. I won't book a holiday on my own again 😭. Anyway put it down to experience. Everyone is happy now and looking forward to our first holiday abroad.

I'm just sorting cases or bags now. We are looking at the ones that go under the seat. As we want to avoid check in. I was looking at soft ones . But now I'm wondering if hard shell would be better so it doesn't bulge?

We are away for 5 nights so I'm wondering about the 2 youngest. I'm thinking maybe 7 pairs of shorts. 7 t shirts obviously underwear/socks and a pair of summer type shoes. Wear trousers / top and zipped hoodie, for travel. They will probably want their tablets, plug and a colouring book /pens .

Wouldn’t have to be a checked one but I’d get at least one that isn’t just the tiny backpack otherwise you’ll likely end up being charged at the gate. Not much fits in those tiny bags

Yeah I have realised that. It works for the 2 younger kids but not for anyone else.

It says this:

Priority & 2 Cabin Bags: This allows you to bring a 10kg bag (55x40x20cm) onboard, and costs between £6 and £36 per person, one way.

Because ds has autism we can get free prority boarding . But im not sure if that would include a cabin case. Or if its purely just the boarding and I would have to pay more if I wanted a cabin case.

You would best checking with Ryan Air but unlikely. Might be worth paying for at least one cabin case for extra stuff if not.

PinkPinkPinkBlue · 29/03/2025 22:18

@Youagain2025 It’s just assisted boarding, fast pass security and skip the queue passport control you get for having a disability. It’s ran by the airport not the airline itself you just book the assisted travel via the airline.

So it would still be extra for the cabin case?
Is assisted boarding for the whole party or just the child and one carer?

Yeah may i need to.

its confused me where it says prority and 2 cabin cases . It then gos on to say this entitles you to bring on a cabin case. So where does the 2 come from?

You’ll definitely need to book and pay for the cabin case. Shouldn’t be too much hassle to add one onto the booking.

PinkPinkPinkBlue · 29/03/2025 22:32

@Youagain2025 yes you would have to pay for the case, assisted travel board before “paid priority boarding.” You get a flower lanyard and ID tag at the assisted travel desk, you then pass through security, passport control in both countries in the assisted travel lanes. We travel regularly and the family is kept together never been split up.

TokyoSushi · 29/03/2025 22:34

Priority & 2 cabin bags is good, you get priority boarding, a 10kg bag which can be a cabin suitcase and the small under seat bag, so that’ll be fine for a week.

Just the under seat bag will be pretty tight, ok for just clothes, but once you add toiletries, suncream, shoes, chargers etc it’s very small…

It is badly worded but I read that as 2 bags, one 10kg and one underseat, if you pay for Priority. Your priority for assistance allows for the qualifying person plus the rest of the group to board early before most other passengers.

AllyDally · 30/03/2025 00:58

I find the most difficult thing with packing for summer holidays is the toiletries, if ypu take cabin bags you are limited to 100ml per item unless you buy all suncream at the airport after you hace gone through security. I am allergic to most things so this is virtually impossible for me.

I went with Wizz in Feb and its fractionally bigger than Ryanair but I found that I could fit hardly anything in. Its got ridiculous how little you can take in hand luggage now.

Bogginsthe3rd · 30/03/2025 19:46

You'll definitely need to pay for checked in luggage even if you don't want to with the clothes you'll need for the holiday with your children. What would be worse is realising your hand luggage is too big at the gate and being made to pay even more to check it in. Did you get your passports back already ?

CountryQueen · 30/03/2025 20:23

We get loads in the underseat backpacks! I have no idea what is so difficult. It’s a few nights in Spain, you’ll need very little.

chesterelly1 · 30/03/2025 21:23

Use packing cubes to be able to squeeze more in. When we went away when the dc were small I used to buy new undies/socks/pjs then had an epiphany that not everything on holiday has to be shiny and new. Started packing the old/tatty/nearly grown out of stuff and kept the new stuff for coming back to. That way you can ditch stuff when you’re away. It frees up a little space for souvenirs and you have less washing. Usually just these basics but if you’re doing a beach holiday I’d be tempted to pop in a couple of old T-shirts too but my DC were clarts and no one needs to be stain busting on holiday

Ozmel61 · 30/03/2025 21:31

I really cannot emphasise enough that having a piece of hand luggage for each passenger involving children is bloody stressful. We did this and it was awful and my adult son lost his passport at the return airport because of all the juggling with a child, pushchair and 4 hand luggage between us .
We are all competent travellers but the mix of small cases and child just was awful. The airport was hot and packed.
Son then wasn’t allowed on flight home without passport!!
Cannot recommend enough to check in a couple of cases and avoid the stress.

It will definitely fit the kids stuff in . I have orded just one case of that size. That way I can see what I can get in it . And decide from there. Hoping yoir right though.

No need to check in, I wouldn’t with Ryanair. Just pay for cabin baggage. Under seat is just a small bag. We usually travel with bags under seat only and it’s ok for us.

99namechanges · 30/03/2025 22:23

Why are you so against checking a bag in?
Its very simple. Much easier than faffing about with hand luggage that needs to be checked and emptied out and liquids screened. Putting a suitcase on a conveyor belt and waving it goodbye is so much easier than cramming stuff into small bags/cases and worrying so much about it.

My son says its to much faffing. If need be I may do this.

Priority & 2 Cabin Bags: This allows you to carry a small personal bag (40x20x25cm), which must fit under the seat in front of you and a 10kg bag (55x40x20cm) onboard, to be stored in the overhead locker. It also allows you to board the plane first using the Priority Boarding queue at the gate.

It lots less faffing than panicking over dimensions of hand luggage for days.
Checking a suitcase in is unbelievably simple.

Teenagerantruns · 30/03/2025 22:42

Just pay to check a suitcase, overhead is a nightmare, there might not be space near your seats. You realise that you can't take a handbag with underseat luggage? Priority means nothing on ryan air everyone with overhead luggage has priority, it's madness.

LIZS · 30/03/2025 22:50

But you need to pay for priority to get the extra cabin bag. It may still end up in the hold if the plane is busy and lots if others have additional cabin bags or you arrive later to the gate. Check if priority boarding for additional needs allows you to prebook seats together, or if you need to pay to include that.

I may do the special assistance. Which means we would be some of the first on the plane. I have already orded the underseat case. So i can see what I can fit. If I need more room then I will get a larger case.

If I do the special assistance we will be some of the first on the plane. Yes I would have to pay for the bigger case to go in the cabin. But we would only want the one extra case. So would not want to pay for 5 of us to have prority boarding for the sake of one case, if we just add one case we would only have to pay for 1 priority boarding for 1 case. Then the special assistance boarding would allow us on without it costing us more

Checking in a suitcase is the least stressful / ‘faffy’ part of flying. It is absolutely no comparison to emptying bags so that you can remove electronics and liquids to go through the scanners. I am a frequent traveler and still find it stressful - even when travelling alone without the children
