It's an obscene amount of money.

Apart from the usual house, car, holiday, helping friends and family and charity, what would you do with it?

At this point in my life I’d use it for something extremely important.
laser hair removal on my moustache.

🤣🤣🤣 gosh I'd 100% be doing this too 😬 my tash & chin hair are wildly out of control!

WhitegreeNcandle · 28/03/2025 15:56

Oh I’ve had such fun thinking about this.

we run a business, I’d retire from it, triple the pay of all the staff and buy them a car plus fill their pension every year. I’d put a manager in the house we live in.

We’d buy a house nearby. Might move DD to a boarding school.

I’d go to the local primary school and gift them a sum of money that the interest would be enough to pay an extra teacher a year or something.

I’d fund all our village church refurbishment and then set aside enough money so that running costs come from the interest.

I’d gift all my family and god children a million. Probably pay the god children’s school fees.

I’d fund a few local charities close to my heart.

Then I’d pootle about doing charity work, do some learning into Biblical archaeology, go to the theatre A LOT and garden.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 28/03/2025 16:00

I’d travel a lot, then come home and start my own theatre company, that’s my lifelong dream.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 28/03/2025 16:01

Oh, and I’d buy a house with enough land that I could have several dogs, some ducks and some Pygmy goats! 😆

ALJT · 28/03/2025 16:02

I would buy properties all over the world in places I’d want to holiday. I’d make bank accounts for my kids, nieces and nephews… I’d invest… and then I’d live nicely as a lady of leisure. Wouldn’t give a penny to charities however if there was go fund me for things that directly help people like money for equipment etc then I’d donate to them

AdoraBell · 28/03/2025 16:04

I can’t afford a ticket but I would buy houses for my DDs, pay off the student loans, pay off my debts. Then I’d think about what to do before spending it.

somanythingssolittletime · 28/03/2025 16:11

I would buy Harry Styles ;-)

orangegato · 28/03/2025 16:12

@LushLemonTart oh don’t worry those furry little fuckers would be spoilt. Think Choupette. Solid gold cat tree. Sheba instead of Whiskas. Le Creuset cat bowls. I’ve thought this through.

KarlaKK · 28/03/2025 16:33

I've bought a ticket but don't want to win that much. I'd give most of it away. That would probably be my job - finding small charities that don't get much funding. I'd have to find loads of them. It might be a nightmare and time-consuming. I'd donate to individuals too - not massive amounts like millions but £100,000 here and there to help out.

Mwydryn · 28/03/2025 16:52

Libraries! So many libraries. Improving the council-run ones and creating new, impressive ones which will offer free residential courses in the arts. I'd set up a press too, for under-represented writers, and I'd buy lots of land and plant huge forests and orchards.

fromthevault · 28/03/2025 16:58

I'd really really like to do lots of random acts of kindness, too. I often read threads on here where it's obvious that a relatively small amount of money would absolutely transform someone's life - imagine having the ability to just do that for someone. It would probably mean that MN was over-run with money-seeking trolls, but it's a nice idea!

YorkieTheRabbit · 28/03/2025 17:03

Fully fund an animal sanctuary that I donate to.

Fund our local hospice.

Buy twenty houses, pay all the household bills, allow women fleeing domestic abuse to live rent free for roughly five years. During that time, they would hopefully be able to work/train and become self sufficient, enabling them to move on and free up the houses for others in the same situation.

Set up lunch clubs for school holidays.
Twice weekly lunch clubs for people who are lonely/elderly etc including suitable transport.

Buy several acres of land to be properly re wilded

LadyRoughDiamond · 28/03/2025 17:14

Oh the charities and community interest companies you could set up with that money! The right person could make such a difference.

I’ve always wanted to set up a network of ‘homework cafes’ - basically, cafes that would otherwise be closed in the evening, opened up for school kids with limited quiet space at home to do their homework or revision. Free basic drinks & snacks, manned by cafe staff and trainee teachers (in partnership with TT providers).

Or setting up a social housing association like the old Victorian philanthropists, with affordable rent, and health care advice, a library, affordable childcare and education and training info on site.

If anyone wins tonight, please do something good. I’m off to buy a ticket…

ClaudiaWrinklemum · 28/03/2025 17:20

I’m going to buy an island, build a massive castle on it, surround the castle with impenetrable thorny plants, and fill the castle full of cats. I’m going to have a huge bedroom with a custom-made mattress that fills the entire room, and hundreds of pillows and a duvet the size of a football pitch. And a wine cellar. And within the wall of thorns I’ll build two cottages - one for the elderly couple who will cook and clean and maintain the thorns, and one for the naked muscular cheese maker.

Butterpaneer · 28/03/2025 17:23

Oh Ive just bought a ticket too. Have to remind myself I havent won it (yet!)

I would buy a large (not mansion, maybe a decent 5 bed?) with loads of land. It would need: several bathrooms, a swimming pool, a movie room, a sauna, a massive kitchen with an island, an orangery. And I'd need a ride on Mower. Then I'd get lots of farm animals but pay staff to do the mucky bits. I'd also have a lovely kitchen garden and orchard, and a massive pond. And an outdoor kitchen. And a proper treehouse for ds. And a library.

I'd pay off my sister's mortgage and give them £10mil, same for bil. I'd buy a lovely beach holiday home, probably in Wales, and maybe a villa in the south of France. I'd offer my parents and in laws money too.

I'd pick some people and donate £1m each to a charity of their choice.

I'd also pay for private school for ds, dniece and dnephew and set up trust funds for them all

Then we would take a really lovely holiday somewhere

Add Harry Styles and high speed internet in there and you just described my dream life

tillyandmilly · 28/03/2025 17:30

Buy a house! With a garden - Pay off our mortgage and retire! Also donate a couple of million to my local dog rescue centre and our local cancer charity

Can Harry Styles make cheese? If so, he’ll do.

JaneJeffer · 28/03/2025 17:44

You’ll need that cheese maker to change the duvet cover for you (and a huge washing machine) @ClaudiaWrinklemum

Pedallleur · 28/03/2025 17:51

Get the cheque in the bank and go to a boutique bank that handles this money for high worth individuals. You need to plan what happens to the money. Inheritance tax is 40% so 80 million would go to the Govt. Prob be a trust fund for my daughter but not available until eg 25 years old. The wills would need rewriting and I might consider moving to Monaco or taking residence somewhere warm. That money needs consideration. No good if it causes family divisions or your husband decides to leave with his half of the money to pursue the 19 yr old Only Friends woman he secretly subscribes to.

caterpillars27 · 28/03/2025 17:51

Not bought a ticket in years until I saw this thread haha!

NoBiscuitsLeftInMyTin · 28/03/2025 17:51

Well - thank you to everybody for your ideas. JTLYK I've already bought the winning ticket but keep the ideas coming!

MadamePeriwinkle · 28/03/2025 17:52

I was trying to manifest this for last week so I have a written list which is mostly all the basic stuff, and as I have a small family I don't have need for a massive house or huge car. I'd probably a cottage in Yorkshire so I could get up there more often in addition to my main house.

I'd ask our local high school to give me a wish list and make a significant donation to fund it.

After that I'd set up a national scholarship fund for children who have been in the care system to get substantial help with uni costs.

The other thing I've thought about is setting up a gated residential unit for women escaping domestic violence, where they could stay for 3-6 months and get emotional and legal support, advice on employment, education and benefits and some free childcare while they got back on their feet. It would basically be like a specialised residential Surestart centre.

I'd set them both up so I could have a little involvement but on an ad hoc basis rather than day to day.

Beyond that I'd just enjoy early retirement - there's lots of things I've not done yet and places I haven't seen and at 50 I'd be happy enough to spend the rest of my days enjoying those.
