It's an obscene amount of money.

Apart from the usual house, car, holiday, helping friends and family and charity, what would you do with it?

DeepfriedPizza · 28/03/2025 14:21

There's an empty building round the corner from my house owned by the local council and will only be sold to a comminuty group. I would buy it an turn it into a multi use centre that can be used for coffee morning, toddler groups, youth groups etc.

Uricon2 · 28/03/2025 14:27

Usual seeing family and friends alright.

I'd set up a housing foundation, buying up and restoring properties and giving people proper, secure tenancies. Profits from rent to be ploughed back in to expand the work. I've had it mentally planned for years!

LushLemonTart · 28/03/2025 14:27

I'd love to open youth groups where you can't just sit on your phone. They can play pool darts cards board games. Do crafts etc. Possibly video games? Phone use discouraged. Don't know if it'd be popular but there's so many dcs that sit in their rooms.

Slightly off topic but how do you initially manage the money? I mean, obviously you get a lot of good advice but do you have to lock a load away because squirrelling it in your current account or handy ISA while you decide how to divvy it up is probably going to cause a headache with the FCA protection? Does it just land in your account one day? And presume any interest gets taxed so you’d need to keep some cash handy in order to pay that at the end of the year.

The Lottery gives you a shedload of financial advice when you win, and will advise you on wealth management for the future too. They recognise that winning large amounts of money can be destabilising and scary, and they have a responsibly to make sure you are OK. People with that amount of money usually have a staff to help them look after it.

I’m interested in how inconceivable this wealth is for most of us. My thoughts immediately were give up the job I’m not enjoying, pay off the mortgage, take the family on a nice holiday (we can’t afford one this year as things stand), get some building work done to our house that I have been wanting to do. Beyond that, my own personal needs feel met. Maybe a new laptop? I think the challenge for me would be the guilt in not being able to solve all the problems I see. I’d have to choose what to make a difference to.

Agree - why not make 202 people millionaires?

Many people don't enter the small draws because it is not enough to be life changing for them. They spend money entering because of the appeal of "big money". That amount varies from person to person.

Walker1178 · 28/03/2025 14:37

I’d have to give at least £150mil away and then employ a body guard for my cat so nobody steals her for ransom to get hold of the rest. I’d then lead a nice quiet life reading books and signing up for all different courses at the local college. I quite fancy learning silver smithing, painting with watercolours and flower arranging instead of the current 9-5

BurntBanana · 28/03/2025 14:39

I’d have a bloody lovely time giving most of it away.

SawItOnTikTok · 28/03/2025 14:39

I’d do the usual, buy a big place in the country, immediately retire all my family and give them enough money to enjoy etc etc.

I would fund the dog shelters I got my dogs from.

I would also buy some houses and set up a fund for women who need to leave abusive relationships and can’t because they have no money. Give them a place to go and as much money as they’d need to set themselves and their children up in a place of safety so they don’t have to worry what’s coming next and can get back on their feet.

then just sort of sprinkle joy amongst my friends and family. Would need a housekeeper and a cook. My MOT is due Wednesday and I can’t find anywhere to fit me in so I’d buy a new car first thing.

Snugglemonkey · 28/03/2025 14:48

I would set up a health trust and an educational trust so that generations of my family would have private education and healthcare. I would seek to create generational benefits for my extended family and for my close friends and their children,as well as giving family and friends money now.

I would also create trusts for my children so that they acquire wealth throughout their lives. Payments at 18, 21, 25, 30, 35 and 40.

I would set up a charitable foundation with half of it which would aim to support projects for women and children, especially those having experienced abuse and needing therapeutic support.

I would give donations to the charities I currently support.

I would keep £10 million invested for personal benefit.

LongRangeDessertGroup · 28/03/2025 14:55

I’d buy an ice cream van and just travel around giving out free ice creams

I think I would panic too, at first, and try to avoid doing anything too rash till reality has settled in and I can think clearly.
Obviously pay mortgage off and all other outstanding debt. That would be the first thing to address, no question.
I’d gift money to close family but otherwise I would probably try to keep it on the down low. Enough for them to pay off their debts and live comfortably.
Amazing holiday would be booked, that would also probably be one of the first things I do.
Things like work and where to live I’d find more difficult. I’d be tempted to quit work but my rational brain would tell me I’ll soon get bored. I don’t think a jet setting lifestyle of not working and just complete indulgement would really suit me. I’m not sure I’d want to move my daughter from her school and friends. Maybe a bigger, better house but in the same area. Possibly also a wee holiday bolt hole or several around the world!
My OH would get his knee operated on privately.
I know nothing about setting up charities or where to even start with the philanthropy side. If I gave to charity I would want to know exactly what my money was doing though!

ShinySquirrel · 28/03/2025 15:03

I would buy SO MUCH yarn.

Lurkingonmn · 28/03/2025 15:03

Rewrite my will!
Put a chunk aside/invest to cover any tax bills for people if I died within 7 years of giving them the money.
Pay off mortgages of my close friends/family/buy them a property if renting.
Set up trust funds for DC/DN&DN/GC etc. Maybe for close friend's DC/GC too.
Properties around the UK/World.
Support the charities i do now- but more so.
Give back to people who I know have done a lot for others - and the charities they run/work for.
Support initiatives/charities/businesses close to my family and friends.

DonaldMacRonald · 28/03/2025 15:09

I'd half my winnings with my sibing to start. Then I'd buy a lovely forever home. Employ a chef and a housekeeper. Tummy tuck and breast uplift. Amazing holiday. I'd like to open a centre for elderly people with free activities and a cafe, there isn't much for elderly people who are alone around where I live. I'd also love to open a massive children's centre with lots of childrens activities, freeplay as well as classed etc. Some to parkinsons research. Anonymous amounts through the doors of friends and people who I know who I think are deserving as I wouldn't want everyone knowing that I'd won such a sum of money.

MystyLuna · 28/03/2025 15:13

I would use it to ensure that my disabled son had the best care for the rest of his life.
It is such a worry wondering what will happen to him when we die.
He will need 24 hour care for the rest of his life.

Uricon2 · 28/03/2025 15:13

EarlofShrewsbury · 28/03/2025 15:01

This is actually my plan too.

Then if I don't win, I really hope you do! Unaffordable and insecure housing is a scourge in this country.

orangegato · 28/03/2025 15:31

Many, many cats. I’d keep my Fiesta though, it’s the best car in the world.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 28/03/2025 15:32

I wouldn't hand my notice in.... I wfh and am completely ignored by my team... so I would just stop working and see how long it takes for them to stop paying me!

juicylipbalm · 28/03/2025 15:32

Why are you all buying tickets? You’re ruining my chances!!!!

NeedWineNow · 28/03/2025 15:41

It would do me and DH!

Apart from the usual making sure that friends and family are sorted I think we'd enjoy travelling to all the places we've wanted to go, but be able to do it in a more luxurious style. And I'd take great delight in going to Chanel and ordering a 2.55 bag, because I've always wanted one.

One of the first things I would do is contact our local hospice. There was a piece on our local news recently about them having to cut staff and services because of funding reductions and I would definitely want to give them something.

Biggles27 · 28/03/2025 15:41

As my immediate family (sisters/brothers/nieces/nephews/aunts/uncles/parents/cousins/our dc) is huge - think over 100 people plus our friends on top - I'd not have a lot of change out of 200 million once I’d donated as well to the charities I’d like to make significant donations to. With that much money I’d be able to get everyone a modest house (£1m for 3 bed semi where we live) mortgage free which would literally change their lives. plus pay off all debt plus a new car

CreationNat1on · 28/03/2025 15:46

Animal welfare charity and AA/addiction services would get a big donation.

Then 1 mill each to siblings, some close and pleasant family and friends. Give this house to my ex, buy a new one with a pool for me.

After that travel the world, fancy hotels, delicious food. Buy land and have re wilding projects, plant trees.

LSTMS30555 · 28/03/2025 15:48

Rottweiler sanctuary 🥰
