Emma Bridgewater mug handles keep dropping off!

Earlier posts on the same subject are a bit old now.
I love EB mugs and have bought 14/15 but I’m now down to about 7. The handles simply drop off. At £25 each I think this is ridiculous.
I emailed EB pointing out the weakness, making it clear I was not seeking recompense but telling them I am no longer collecting them.

I received a reply explaining their quality control. Not much help.
if anyone else has had the same experience please contribute to the thread and I shall advise EB to have a look at your responses.
Many thanks.

This happened to me yesterday morning! Handle came off as I picked it up to drink and the mug cracked open like an Easter egg. Luckily the tea was tepid as I’d got sidetracked after I made it earlier. I agree the quality of Emma Bridgewater has gone down the last few years, I have some that are well over 10 years old that look brilliant and more recently bought ones that are very crazed.

As a non-potter, just an enthusiast, that suggests to me they are making those mugs in a mould and joining the halves, rather than throwing them on a wheel. But still shouldnt split like that, ever.

Scutterbug · 27/03/2025 22:24

I’ve got about 30 and never had a handle fall off!

LynetteScavo · 27/03/2025 22:41

Asau the quality of EB mugs is poor. It took me a long time to realise this (I must be a bit dim) and so I have a large collection in my garden now acting as plant pots. DH has declared we are never buying any more EB products - they are lovely to look at if not used Sad

The handles on my EB mugs often break off and funnily enough we were having a conversation only this morning about finding another brand of mugs to build up a new collection. I think they're expensive for the number of times the handles have broken off and now they don't even do replacement lids for the teapots.

Snugglemonkey · 27/03/2025 22:47

It happened my Mama bear one that DS picked for me. Really pissed me off.

southchinasea · 27/03/2025 22:48

Yes the same has happened to several of my EB mugs - such a shame, as I love the designs, and have quite a few flowers and birds. Others have bits of the glaze that have chipped off or have developed long cracks. Really not good enough for the cost.

I've got a very favourite one that I try not to use too often. The handle came off it yesterday as I lifted it out of the dishwasher. I'm hand washing from now on and could have cried as the pattern is discontinued (one of my dogs).

What’s the pattern?

imsorryihaventaclue · 27/03/2025 23:12

I have had several lose handles over the years but none since I started storing them upright after I noticed the handle is taller than the mug. Like a previous poster, I think storing them upside down puts pressure on the handle over time and weakens it.

Buy Brixton Pottery instead. EB. Totally ripped them off originally.

These are nice, and so many! I’ve never bought any EB ones as I don’t like the writing inside. I just know I’d be reading‘SUNFLOWERS SUNFLOWERS’ over and over every time I had a sip of tea so these would be much better for me,

Noooooo! I’ve just started collecting them and have 5/6 ish! More on my wish list! I will heed this caution and not buy any more though so thank you!

My CK mugs that I’ve had over a decade are still going strong!

I love my old CK mugs; the straight-sided ones are a perfect size and shape, and I’ve had them about twenty years. The newer ones are pretty but not quite right for a strong cuppa

ConsuelaHammock · 27/03/2025 23:31

The handles have fallen off so many of mine I’ve stopped buying them. I must have had 30 mugs over the years but here’s only so many toothbrush holders, pen pots and plant pots one can use. I still have a few discontinued ones stashed from previous sales but I won’t be buying any more. I have Denby feom
mt wedding and they’re like brand new and almost 20 years old . I like the creuset mugs and have a lovely one from Giesla Graham which is very pretty. I’m afraid EB has lost me as a customer. £25 is just much too expensive now !

Frostynoman · 27/03/2025 23:31

One of my favourites has a crack at the handle join - it’s a design flaw

whatf · 27/03/2025 23:34

I've had this happen as well. Got given one, used and dishwashed it quite a bit, handle broke off.

PeriMoan · 27/03/2025 23:35

I only had the one. The handle recently broke as I lifted it out of the dishwasher. Annoyingly, it also chipped both itself and another mug as it landed on other items in the dishwasher rack. I can't remember how long I have it. Probably 2.5-3 years. It's always stored upright, but I put its breaking down to the dishwasher.

FortyNineAndABit · 27/03/2025 23:35

I haven't had the handle issue but in general I find their china very mixed in quality. A lot of my mugs are crazed inside and the patterned items (ones with transfer pictures rather than handpainted) have faded a lot in the dishwasher. Maybe I'm not supposed to dishwash them, I don't know?

DramaAlpaca · 27/03/2025 23:41

I've only had one EB mug, a lovely one with a robin on it, and yes the handle broke.

I have a large collection of Nicholas Mosse mugs, made in Kilkenny, Ireland, and they are fantastic quality. I've never had one so much as craze or crack, let alone have a handle fall off.

justasking111 · 27/03/2025 23:53

Had mine as gifts from the grandchildren for years, not recently though. Never had an issue. Are they being made differently now.

AnotherHappyCamper · 28/03/2025 00:00

I have maybe 50 (possibly more, I haven't actually counted) of them and none have broken, touch wood. But I'd already decided I'm definitely not going to buy any more.

They're a good size for a cuppa and kind of fun/sweet but the prices really are a bit much. I have never paid full price.

They are made in a mould.

Poppystar1 · 27/03/2025 18:09

Yes, this has happened to 7 or 8 of our EB mugs. I contacted their customer service and received a fairly noncommittal email saying that they hadn’t come across the problem before! I also have found that the glaze on them looks cracked after not much use. It’s a shame - they’re lovely mugs to drink out of, and the designs are gorgeous, but I won’t be buying anymore of them.

Edited

Chinny reckon to EB saying that they hadn’t come across the problem before!

ThatsNotMyTeen · 28/03/2025 00:15

Oh I bought one at Christmas for myself. I’ll see how it goes

orangedream · 28/03/2025 00:30

Yes, the quality is rubbish but the customer service is worse. Orders always arrive later than stated and they are borderline rude if you email them. Very passive aggressive responses.

TeaRoseTallulah · 28/03/2025 00:37

Why on earth would you say you weren't looking for recompense? At 25 quid a mug I would want a replacement. I have 2 which were gifts and they're lovely but nothing like the quality of Denby.

If the handles come off so regularly it's due to lazy finishing off causing weakness.

cailingaelach · 28/03/2025 00:37

Same here and I had same response from them.

tiredofthisusername · 27/03/2025 16:51

I don't own anything by EB. In all my life I have never had a single handle drop off a mug, cup, jug or any other receptacle, ever. Never ever. Not one. It is not a thing I would even begin to consider happening.

So it has to be exceptionally shoddy manufacturing for it to be a common thing with Emma Bridgewater mugs.

Same here.
It sounds like dreadful. A known fault that they can't be bothered to fix.

AnotherHappyCamper · 28/03/2025 00:57

Again I seem to be an outlier - I've never had anything but great experiences with CS, on the phone or by email they've always been very helpful.

Shame if it's going pear shaped lately.
