Inspired by another unusual baby name thread.
I remember as a young child hating my boring normal name and wanting to change it.
So glad I kept my name instead of becoming 'crystal star twinkle' that my 6 year old self insisted I wanted to be called.

I did change my name. Unofficially at 14 when I moved school then by deed poll on the first day I could.

I went with my middle name (thankfully my lovely Nana practically bullied my parents into giving me a 'boring' nickname to go with the monstrosity their drug addled brains came up with) for easiness.

I did have a shortlist with Elizabeth (nn Libby), Alexandra (nn Alexa - thank fuck I didn't go with that!), and Madeleine on it

Emma

I was obsessed with Sweet Valley High and I also wanted a western name. So Jessica.

VERY glad I couldn’t. I love my name now, and its connection to my heritage.

No offence to Jessica, but it’s a very bland name!

TiredMummma · 20/03/2025 19:54

Lyra!

McZeba · 20/03/2025 19:54

Lisa - haven’t thought about it since childhood but as soon as I read the title of this thread it popped into my head.

EstherPigeon · 20/03/2025 19:54

Not me, but a younger relative - firstly when we were going metric he wanted to change his name from Miles to Kilometres, and secondly he got a bit fixated with dogs and decided that actually a much better name would be Bonzo. 50 years later I think he's over it!

Elizabeth, my mother’s first choice of name that my grandmother talked her out of. I like my name fine enough but Elizabeth has many more shortenings that I could have chosen from.

My real name is Michelle and I hated it as a child and I also hated my surname as people used to take the mick as it almost rhymes.

I told everyone I met as a child that my name was Daisy Wilkinson.

I also went through a phase of wanting to be called Elaine - out next door neighbour was called Elaine, she was soooo pretty and glamorous and always wore purple fluffy mule slippers like this.

I had a pair of these one Xmas, I must have been about 9 and thought they were wonderful 😂

floppy floppy fluffy

I have a classic, shortish and elegant name. Hated it. I wanted a bit of pizzazz. Something a bit fancy like Veronica or Esmeralda. Maybe Vespera or Tatiana.

Rosybud88 · 20/03/2025 20:00

I went to stage school and there was a student teacher called Keeley and I just adored her - I wanted that name.

YoungSoak · 20/03/2025 20:00

I was really into the name Gemma as a kid for some reason

Vimaybe · 20/03/2025 20:03

I loved the name Louise, it was all my barbies names and when I was old enough to want one my fake ID name.

If there are any Louise's out there you were the height of cool to teen me 😎

HobnobsChoice · 20/03/2025 20:04

From the age of about 8 I was obsessed with the name Maria. It seemed so exotic and glamorous. Totally unlike my cousin Marie who was very generous and kind but absolutely not glam or exotic being from Salford. In my teens I wished I was Rhian or Rhiannon, one of which is my middle name but I didn't know how to just start using it so I never did.

RosesAndHellebores · 20/03/2025 20:05

I have an uncommon name. I wanted to be called Susan. A pretty, ordinary name that nobody would remark about. My favorite doll was called Susan.

Giddykiddy · 20/03/2025 20:06

I had an unusual (Posh) name and loathed it wanted to be called Joanna

I probably would have chosen Jemima or Leila- I was obsessed with Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Sound of Music 🤣

Leila is supposed to say Liesl 😏 my English keyboard obviously doesn’t agree

Whattodo12e · 20/03/2025 20:20

Clara from Heidi

Flamingpantoufles · 20/03/2025 20:21

Max (in early primary years at least) - the boys seemed to get to do all the fun stuff and that would have been my preferred boy name.

FedupMumof10YearOld · 20/03/2025 20:21

Jessica

Slumbering · 20/03/2025 20:32

Joanna, because of everything that I perceived to go with it - confidence, maturity, popularity, beauty, brains - everything I lacked 😂.

MinkyWales · 20/03/2025 20:41

Sarah. I wanted to fit in, and my name always made me stand out.

MinkyWales · 20/03/2025 20:41

(I am 56 and still don’t feel that my name feels like mine.)

SpikeSalmon · 20/03/2025 20:45

Most of these are fairly normal!

I wanted to be Christabelle. Good job I wasn't in charge of names.

Rockmehardplace · 20/03/2025 20:46

As a child I longed to be called Mandy, it just seemed like the epitome of cool to me.
