Inspired by another unusual baby name thread.
I remember as a young child hating my boring normal name and wanting to change it.
So glad I kept my name instead of becoming 'crystal star twinkle' that my 6 year old self insisted I wanted to be called.

Susie (late 60s/early 70s). My name was considered foreign and weird.

PreciousRighteousTeacher · 20/03/2025 18:27

@TheCurious0range I can identify with that. My Nan was a housekeeper for a very glamorous Belgian lady called Magda. This was the late 60’s Magda wore beautiful clothes that she often passed on to my Nan. Myself and my sisters used to dress up in some of them. I especially liked her cast off kaftans. I have always hated my boring old fashioned name. I also wished I had a middle name. I always fancied being called Erin Louise.

Laurie as I loved Little Women (am female but I think it's totally unisex)

Liondoesntsleepatnight · 20/03/2025 18:27

Louisa

I wanted to be Elizabeth.

Thank fuck I didn't change my name. Elizabeth is even worse than my own name! It's bloody terrible.

Me too. I was really envious of a schoolmate called Elizabeth. So glad I kept my own.

I have a very unusual name and I hated it and really wanted to be called Juliet. I used to sign my name as Juliet.

now years later my best friend is called Juliet and she hates her name

Barbara. This is outing if any of my family happen to be on here but I used to collect the Kelloggs tokens off the boxes to send away for whatever tat was to be had and I used to put my name down as Barbara. My mother nearly passed out when post arrived for Barbara. She is still talking about it to this day, 41 years later. One of my
earliest memories 🙈

LateMumma · 20/03/2025 18:34

Carlotta (poss read about in a book?) or Alinette (almost certainly made up) So glad I didn’t have the choice!

Doyouthinktheyknow · 20/03/2025 18:34

Hannah.

I have a very boring of its era name that dates me. I’ve never liked it, always loved the name Hannah.

TomatoSandwiches · 20/03/2025 18:35

Apparently when I was about 5 I asked my mum why she didn't call me Michelle, our accent doesn't lend itself well to how I pronounced it and she gave that reason as to why it wasn't my name 😂

Needspaceforlego · 20/03/2025 18:37

Annie and when I got older Lauren.
At once point I tried to use a nickname but it never really happened. I think the only way to get a nickname to stick is to introduce yourself with it in a new circle of friends, ie new school, uni, job or new clubs.

cramptramp · 20/03/2025 18:39

I used to think Maxine and Michelle were the height of sophisticated names. For some reason.

LeaveALittleNote · 20/03/2025 18:40

There was a very pretty girl at school called called Lara and I was very jealous of that name.

LeaveALittleNote · 20/03/2025 18:41

@LateMumma Did you read Malory Towers? There was a Carlotta in Malory Towers. I loved that name too.

ScarletPower · 20/03/2025 18:43

Donna! I was so desperate to be Donna. There was about 50 in my year at school. I had a double barrelled first name which sounded old and grannyish and now at 49 I feel I'm just growing into it.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 20/03/2025 18:43

Emma.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 20/03/2025 18:43

Spartacus, although having now seen the film I realise it is a very, very common name.

LateMumma · 20/03/2025 18:44

@LeaveALittleNote Yes! That will be it, I span an entire story in my head about how my parents had made a mistake!

Brightredtulips · 20/03/2025 18:45

Purdy or Christina(of flambards)

Greentableleg · 20/03/2025 18:49

I've always hated my name and growing up I wanted to be called Katy after the book What Katy Did. You can guess what I called my daughter!

Saz12 · 20/03/2025 18:57

Belinda, or Apple (there was a tinkly cute character, maybe from the Borrowers?).

Disturbia81 · 20/03/2025 18:58

Tracey

GrandTheftWalrus · 20/03/2025 19:02

So many people have said my actual name! Yet I hate it still as it's too bloody common.

LadyKenya · 20/03/2025 19:03

Charlene. I used to write stories, and the girl was always Charlene. Thanks Neighbours!

Chuchoter · 20/03/2025 19:04

I wanted to be called Judy after Judy Garland and Judy magazine.
