Inspired by another unusual baby name thread.
I remember as a young child hating my boring normal name and wanting to change it.
So glad I kept my name instead of becoming 'crystal star twinkle' that my 6 year old self insisted I wanted to be called.

I was desperate to be Rose (late 70s/early 80s)

Didntask · 20/03/2025 17:53

Alison. I remember a girl called Alison in my first couple of years at primary school, I thought she was so beautiful.

One of my fantasy lives now is named Tabitha (though my mum calls me Dorcas). Another is Shiraz (so much cooler than Chardonnay). With middle name Jessica. My main fantasy life used to be called Jessica but is now called Jemima.

I wanted to be called Silvia and to run away & join the circus to ride the white performing horses in a sparkly costume. Me, that is, not the horses!

largeprintagathachristie · 20/03/2025 17:58

Laura
I wanted something “normal” that people could pronounce and spell easily.
Unlike my actual name. I was a really shy kid and dreaded the first day of a new school year where the new teacher would read the register.

Tiffani-Amber after the actress from saved by the bell, I thought she was beautiful and had such a classy name. Especially the "I" I never forgave my parents for giving me a name there's no nickname ending in an I

I think the horse should have a sparkly costume too!

HerbieFluffyDumpling · 20/03/2025 18:01

Hayley

Happy with my birth name, but I’ve always liked Phoebe and Olivia

cupofgingerbreadtea · 20/03/2025 18:07

I’ve always wanted to be called Tara.

Flyingwands · 20/03/2025 18:07

I always wanted to be called Tammy. I though it sounded cool

takehimjolene · 20/03/2025 18:08

My name and my middle name are both very old fashioned (I've never met anyone with either of them that is not at least 20 years older than me). They're not even names that have come back in to fashion- along the lines of Beryl Mavis.

As a child I always wished I was called Sarah (the most popular name at the time, with several in each class at school) or Tammy-Leigh. The latter because a neighbour who I thought was ultra cool named her DD something similar.

GrandTheftWalrus · 20/03/2025 18:10

This may be outing but I wanted to be called betsy anne curtains.

MaybeIamJealous · 20/03/2025 18:11

I wanted to be called Emma as a child. As a teenager I decided I wanted to be called April for some reason.

Coffeeforayear · 20/03/2025 18:11

Eloise, Pippa, Nina

I do like my middle name better than my 1st name, but my 1st name is ok.

Coffeeforayear · 20/03/2025 18:12

Also liked the name Kerry. I now know 2 Kerrys.

Inextremis · 20/03/2025 18:12

Cassandra. I have no idea why!

NicolaCasanova · 20/03/2025 18:13

I wanted to be called Phyllis. I am not British and was born in the 80s!

TappyGilmore · 20/03/2025 18:14

I don’t know what I would have chosen, but I have a long, traditional name and I would have chosen something shorter and modern/trendy.

As an adult, I’m glad I have a traditional name, but I would still like something shorter! It’s also quite interesting that it is a reasonably common name that in my life up to now has caused me no problems with spelling or pronunciation, and yet majority of people at my current job just can’t cope with it!

DuaNinja · 20/03/2025 18:16

Bronwen after a character on Neighbours

I was thinking about this just last night. I would have loved to be called Sharon or Linda. Also Laura. You can tell the era I grew up in. I was envious of the girls with the popular names. No one had my name. I still rarely meet anyone with my name. That’s because it’s not attractive I think.
although if I had been one of the names I longed for you would instantly know my age. With my name it’s not definitely of an era

Newbie887 · 20/03/2025 18:21

Tamsin Linnet, after Tamsin Grey from the Monica Dickens horse book series, and the wayward Linnet children in Linnets and Valerians 😂

Also Robyn and Aurora, nn Rora

randonneuse · 20/03/2025 18:23

Elizabeth.

Growing up mixed race with my Asian name in a very very white rural community (in the 70s-80s), I was so fed up of the constant drip-drip horrible comments. Children and adults. Aged about 10, I thought maybe it would all be better if I had an English name. What name could be more English than the Queen's? And if I didn't like all of it (I mean, it is quite a long name and maybe I would get bored before I got to the end of it), then I could be Lizzie or Beth or something. Flawless plan! Which I didn't act on, but I thought about it for a long time.
