Never yet met a Brexitier who doesn't say "I'm not a racist but...."

Thanks.

I felt that free movement was contributing towards keeping wages artificially low, meaning our young people were being devalued. I wanted controls so that we were able to have more strategic immigration, I really don't care where they come from.
Tax credits have bridged the gap between artificially low wages and a genuine living wage, with abundant labour supporting this model.

I do object to being called a racist.

I could just hit the Agree button but I want to second this in full view, because I think it’s unfair for @Llttledrummergirl to be called a racist. We’re better than that on these threads, c’mon.

Looks fab @Blossomtoes , hope you had a great time with your DS.

I’m not dragging anything out @Alexandra2001 (yes, I read Edits Hmm). I thought we were past ‘dragging out’ ropey old tropes about ‘Brexiteers Don’t Want Foreign People Here’ and getting snippy when pulled up on it. Wanting artificially low wages to be eradicated isn’t racist. It’s clear that Brexit wasn’t the answer to that, but can we drop the snark, please?

dontcallmelen · 22/03/2025 17:55

Beautiful photograph Blossoms such an amazing city birthday wishes for Ds.
let’s not fall out, it’s been a horrible week with the disappointing proposals from Labour & id imagine a lot of us are still reeling from it we can all have differing opinions the ties that bind us are strong💐

WTAF is this from LK? Not even a pretence if neutrality or, you know, actual facts…

What’s wrong with that article? It seems ok to me. If anything it’s soft.

SerendipityJane · 22/03/2025 18:09

Wanting artificially low wages to be eradicated isn’t racist

But wanting to do it the Brexit way is.

Or to put it another way, how many people who supported Brexit would have supported open borders if it was suggested as a way for "artificially low wages to be eradicated" ?

In the current climate a similar point could be made as to why is hammering the disabled the only way forwards ? Moreover what other ways have been considered ? I know no one on this thread can answer because - spoiler alert - we haven't been told.

Nothing makes me more suspicious than a done deal. Whether it's the Brexiteer claims that theirs is the only solution, or a government pressing the disabled to death with the same rhetoric.

DuncinToffee · 22/03/2025 18:14

I don't think the former Brexit party is interested in workers wages or rights. Or welfare for that matter.

I agree.

The Brexit vote was nearly ten years ago. Not worth arguing about now.

Lots of people who are not racist voted Leave. Including Corbyn if you ask me.

Llttledrummergirl · 22/03/2025 18:48

Thank you @Saucery, I avoid most brexit discussions on here for obvious reasons.

The answer to your question @SerendipityJane is that if I thought open borders would help bridge the gap, and raise standards for all, then I could probably be persuaded to vote for that. I think you need to look at what you have, have make your decision based on what you hope is the least worst outcome.

Everytime I hear vast profits being announced by big companies who employ staff on minimum wage, I think why not put a bit less aside as profit, and pay your staff a bit more? One of the many reasons I didn't like what the tories were promoting.

Jeremy Corbyn ignored or appeased racism. I agree he probably voted Leave though.

Edited

Oof. That is another bone of contention that I wouldn't want to start picking over on this thread.

DuncinToffee · 22/03/2025 18:53

Isn't that more to do with UK laws than FoM? Other countries manage.

It’s entirely based on a negative opinion. It extrapolates total nonsense from things Reeves has said. I don’t believe you can’t see that, you’re an intelligent woman.

MyNameIsX · 22/03/2025 22:53

And literally none of these issues ever stood a chance of being solved by Brexit.

If fact, they were all certain to be made worse as a result of the economy losing over 4% every year. But, yeah, Brexit was a great idea...

It’s Florence Duncin, it was wonderful apart from the crowds, it was insanely busy.

I went to Florence in February. Brilliantly quiet. I walked straight into the Uffizi.

I agree with @Rummly though - it feels like a pretty balanced article. The financial situation is not great, difficult decisions need to be made and a lot of people on either side are not happy. Personally I don’t envy her job- I don’t like a lot of the choices, but not sure what the right ones are. I think her communication has been abysmal, though - there is no wider vision that makes the difficult choices feel worthwhile.

I just can’t see that. It reads as an even-handed report.

You're reading a different article from me then.

Notonthestairs · 23/03/2025 01:13

The oddity of the article is surely that it’s written as if nothing has happened between Brown & Reeves. No austerity. No Brexit.
Choices that were available to Brown don’t translate to today.
No mention of the last 14 years.

This. But I think that is the Tory narrative, having watched BBCQT this week. Talk about the terrible decisions of Brown and Reeves and totally ignore 14 years in between.

Even Tory Bruce had to remind the Tory rep on the panel that they had 14 years in power until recently.

Notonthestairs · 23/03/2025 09:22

Yes, certainly there is an attempt to gloss over the last decade. At most go back to blaming the coalition (nasty L/Ds made us do it).
Austerity weakened our public services, & damaged health etc. Brexit has damaged the economy and continues to limit our options. And that’s under playing the impact of both.
Fast forwarding analysis from Brown to Reeves w/o referencing the choices in between is off. I don’t imagine LK would compare Osborne to Lamont without mentioning the Blair years.

How insightful of you. Would you care to expand, or at least put forward your argument for that assertion?

I think the Tories must be disappointed that they cannot mention the so-called Winter of Discontent in 1979 any more.
