The Nordic countries have a strong based value system instilled in their children and population from an early age. We have far more immigration and diversity. It is not directly comparable.
Norway is losing millionaires at the same rate as us now. And that is with a less than 0.5% wealth tax. Some people here were demanding 2%, that would likely finish the country off for good.
Let’s just face the fact that globalisation has led to mobility and lack of loyalty.

Something like 70% of Norway is uninhabitable.

Yep. They got all the frilly bits that Sweden and Finland couldn't be bothered with.

Count me in as well 😊

My late mum painted this for me. As it's officially Spring, the title, and the first year without her for Mother's Day x

@placemats that’s beautiful, thinking of you, my DM died in 2018 and Mothering Sunday is still a tricky day.

BIossomtoes · 29/03/2025 11:51

Oh @placemats, that’s beautiful. Tomorrow will be tough for you. Sending love. 💐

BIWI · 29/03/2025 11:52

As a family we never really made much of mother’s day - just a card, possibly a coffee in bed! But when my mum died I actually found the first mother’s day without her very hard, which really took me by surprise. Thoughts are with you @placemats Flowers

Susie Dent

Word of the day is ‘erumpent’ (17th century), which describes buds and blossom that are bursting forth with vigour. Can also be used of energetic humans.

My mum died ten years ago this year and I still have to turn away from displays of MD cards when they catch my eye. I used to spend a long time finding exactly the right one. Much love to everyone missing their mum tomorrow.

Piggywaspushed · 29/03/2025 12:27

Norway was a whimsical joke, guys...in response to 'where would we end up?'

I could also have answered 1997, depending on which motorway one takes.

I have been to both. Main difference between them is electric cars.

Oh, I have one of those. He's currently sitting still with a mountain of food.

💐💐💐 For those of you missing your mums.

pointythings · 29/03/2025 13:36

I find Mother's Day very difficult because I lost my mum to alcohol addiction. My DC make it easier though, they have grown up into such wonderful young people.

That’s beautiful.

I’ll be thinking of you tomorrow. 3rd Mother’s Day without my mum tomorrow.

I will grant you that, if you grant me that it's been going on for millennia. This really is nothing new.

DuncinToffee · 29/03/2025 14:30

It was a bit easier when the UK was still connected to mainland europe

What’s the deletion? What did I miss?!

DuncinToffee · 29/03/2025 14:41

No deletion, probably a link or word MN doesn't like

Yes of course migration has been going on for millennia, but it is much easier for some people now when you can move large amounts of capital at a drop of a button (no currency restrictions), purchase a house/rental in advance etc etc, do job applications and even interviews online. You can organise a whole life remotely now.
@DuncinToffee - yes, for those with just 1 passport. We live in London, most people I know have at least 2, some have more, up to 4 in some cases. So their mobility is not restricted. Maybe that is the biggest privilege now, freedom to move freely and have a choice on where to live.
Interestingly, places like Sweden and Switzerland are changing very rapidly now with migration. At a really fast rate. It will be interesting to see if they retain their social democratic value systems or succumb to the Brexit/Reform nonsense we got here.

DuncinToffee · 29/03/2025 14:48

People with money always have freedom of movement, my comment was a joke about Mesolithic hunter-gatherers

It is usually the ones shouting the loudest about sovereignity who are the least loyal

'An insult’: Amanda Spielman, Ofsted chief at time of Ruth Perry’s suicide, to be given a peerage

The nomination by Conservatives of the former chief inspector of schools has been met with outrage by the headteacher’s family, and called ‘obscene’ by school leaders

My Mum loved her Mother's Day cards and I would spend time picking out the right one for her. Had a long and lovely chat with my brother whose ex wife a lovely sister in law xx and mother of his two children, her fabulous boys, died suddenly last year as well. SIL was just wonderful x. It's good to talk and remonice.

Much love to all who struggles with grief. My own children are fabulous and hugs are just the remedy you need ((((hugs))).
