AI proof jobs

My sister works with AI and explained how AI already saves man hours and her boss is looking to reduce the team over time. I am so worried about the future job prospects for the next generation. Other than cook, plumber, brick layer, physio therapist, surgeon, what jobs may be less likely to be affected in the near future? I guess anything that requires manual skill and labour as robotics will be less likely to advance as fast. How will you advise you young people?

Nursing, midwifery, prostitution and cleaning.

528htz · 18/03/2025 20:03

Plumbing. I'd like to see a robot do any of that work whilst getting covered in water, muck and the household dog or cat 😂

MissRain · 18/03/2025 20:05

Midwifery is a good shout.

Our teens already use, and know they are using, AI in entertainment and education.

When I was taking exams my parents could never have guessed the career advice that has been required as the world wide web has grown. So personally I think it's absolutely pointless to try and second guess what they need to know to what exactly? How to be top of the pile?

Best to build characteristics that will always be needed in changing societies rather than specific jobs, because half the jobs of the future don't even exist in people's minds yet.

Feels like everyone will need a therapist eventually!

ConstantlyFuriosa · 18/03/2025 20:06

Hairdresser or chef?

SuperTrooper14 · 18/03/2025 20:07

My DD is going to study animal management. We’re confident it’ll be a while before AI can shovel elephant poop.

That can quite easily be addressed with apps and AI you don't really need a human counsellor if you have a well programmed AI. Ditto for any legal advice I was thinking that Citizens advice bureau could save many volunteer hours by creating an AI app

What about jobs that aren't manual?

The problem I see how can anyone pay for hair cut or fund a health service if most jobs are decimated by AI.

MathsMagpie · 18/03/2025 21:17

teaching to a point, I suppose they will always need people keeping young children on site safely, sorting out toiletting issues and general behaviour..

Nursing, midwifery, prostitution and cleaning.

Well in Ch 4 Humans the very life like robot house keepers can also serve a dual purpose providing sexual services so prostitution could be under threat. I doubt it though as i think most people would prefer the real thing but who knows. And surely more and more surgery will be completed by robots in the future?

Train in tech and AI.

Slimbear · 18/03/2025 22:12

Engineers -AI could do some of the work but not all of their work.

Comedycook · 18/03/2025 22:13

Hairdressing
Cooking/chef
Plumber
Building

But we're basically screwed as a society....there won't be enough jobs for everyone.... governments will have to find a way for people to cope financially in some form. However, I predict they will be slow to catch up and there will be an awful time period where people will be unable to work and governments won't have solved the problem.

This is a interesting point... Indeed AI may well give exactly the same advice as a human therapist, but how much of the therapy experience is about the human-to-human interaction outside of the actual advice?

Whitelight25 · 18/03/2025 22:21

Seems that AI only wants to do the creative, fun jobs. Haven't seen it offering to wash up or clear the drains.

imip · 18/03/2025 22:26

I work in a citizens advice type role and have been experimenting with AI for legal advice. I have to say I don’t think it is great (this may be down to the user 😁). The letters are a little banal and overly flowery. I would need to reread them to make sure they were more hard hitting and sound less like AI. I can also tell when clients have used AI and ask me to check over their paperwork. I feel my job is safe … at least for now!

imip · 18/03/2025 22:28

Part of my role is also the way I work with people and the incidental advice I give, rather than a formal letter/form filling/piece of advice. And the way that a service of mine interacts with non-English speakers. It needs a personal touch.

Precisely. I haven’t seen it picking fruit or wiping bums in care homes either. It wants the cushy well paid jobs.

Politician

A vicar, priest or nun.
Estate agent: very few of us are going to spend hundred of thousands of pounds without someone there to take them on a viewing.
