Why do men think it's ok to shout when there's rugby or football on tv?

Really annoys me, there's rugby or something on tv and my neighbour has made me jump out of my skin several times already with his stupid shouting. It's so annoying that men think it's ok to shout in their stupid bellowing voices.

@GoodVibesHere six nations is the only sport that gets me excited 🥰😂

maggiesleapp · 15/03/2025 21:19

Six nations here so DH and I both getting a bit excited be glad you’re not our neighbour 🥴 cmon scotland!

ChuffyChuffnell · 15/03/2025 21:22

Good job you don’t live next to me then. Come on Scotland!!

Quinlan · 15/03/2025 21:23

Probably the first time ever that all of England is supporting Scotland 🤣.

ChewbaccaAteMyHamster · 15/03/2025 21:24

FFS you would hate living next to me. I love the sport (Football/Rugby/F1/Tennis/Athletics etc etc and am always up shouting and roaring at the TV. I have a bit of a potty mouth too 😂😂

Lol, don't women like sports.

Milliways · 15/03/2025 21:27

I always feel for our neighbours when DH is shouting at recorded Rugby/F1, so at random times!

Spirallingdownwards · 15/03/2025 21:29

I feel sorry for people who don't follow sport and never have the thrills of the ups and downs during matches. Hope you aren't my neighbour as my husband was watching rugby today and I will be louder during a certain football match tomorrow.

Nevermind. Scotland cannot play a good second half of rugby (I’m Scottish before anyone goes mental).

I'm wondering if it's the same one I'll be watching 👀

TheodoraCrumpet · 15/03/2025 22:17

My miserable old sod shouts when it's going badly, and explains the rules of the game ad nauseam when he thinks the referee gets things wrong, but does he shout with excitement when things are going well? He does not. Now that is not okay.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 15/03/2025 22:25

I annoy my DH shouting at the rugby! I can't help it!

frozendaisy · 15/03/2025 22:57

GoodVibesHere · 15/03/2025 18:39

Well no, because he didn't listen to me and still does it.

Ah ok well what does he say when you ask him why he does it?

And if your H won’t stop to help you not jump out of your skin you have little hope with the rest of the shouters.

But if you want a more philosophical observation, as I have a house of males, plus additionals sometimes, who like the odd sporting fixture on tv, and it’s passion, watching live competition, seeing athletes, because whether you enjoy it or not (with the exception of darts perhaps) footballers, rugby players etc are athletes, look at what their bodies do, and the skill and endurance to go against another opponent or team who are also trying to win, you get embroiled in the moment and shouting, cheering, chanting, singing makes you feel part of the game.

Some people feel part of a tribe being a fan, bit like how church use to make people feel.

Yes some take it too far and lose sense of healthy competition, but then others take other things too far as well, we all do from time to time.

Seeing a top athlete/team perform at their best, using refereed games to display human strength and team play, mental strength, pushing to the limits can be a thing of beauty and passion. Accepting defeat gracefully is a good lesson as well.

So being “allowed” to express yourself in those moments is better than being dead inside, devoid of all strong emotions, isn’t it?

Luke Littler in January had our whole house jumping round the sofas every throw of the dart, it was fun, noisy, but fun and took everyone away from the drudgery of daily routine.

It’s not a bad thing OP.

I was down the allotment on the night of the final of Euro 96 - England V Germany

The town was weirdly quiet, virtually no traffic and very quiet.

As the evening progressed though all I could hear were the cheers - and groans from the houses nearby

An evening to remember - although the afternoon when Britannia & a Standard 5 flew past heading for Taunton was much more exciting!

(Two steam engines on a special train)

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 15/03/2025 23:25

I am not a man and I am not interested in any sport, especially any of the blokes with balls games.

But I shout at the TV a lot; drama when people are taking obviously ill thought out courses of action, or inaction, interviewees, interviewers, Question Time (lots), PMQs.

But I have very fond memories of my Grandad shouting at the horse racing, he got so animated on one occasion that he broke his chair!

TheTecknician · 16/03/2025 08:27

My neighbours from a few years ago were like this. Two floors below me in a block of flats and the racket he in particular made when LUFC did something right could be quite disturbing; 'Yes, yes, fucking geddin'. That kind of thing. Loud, aggressive and neanderthal.

MadamDicey · 16/03/2025 08:33

When I shout out at the tv ,it comes out like a scream , I sound very pathetic 🤣🤣

BuildbyNumbere · 17/03/2025 07:35

God forbid someone enjoys themselves in their own home!! 🙄

BuildbyNumbere · 17/03/2025 07:37

KIlliePieMyOhMy · 15/03/2025 18:02

I shout a lot at BBC Casualty.

🤣 why??

Swiftie1878 · 17/03/2025 08:02

GoodVibesHere · 15/03/2025 18:56

None of my family have been in a match or show so I can't say that I've ever experienced that, no. I might sing along to a song on the radio but that would be more of a quiet humming rather than a sudden angry shout at the top of my voice, 'c'mon you bastard' type thing.

I did go to watch a friend in a race, I clapped when she ran past and said 'Well done Sue', the people I was with cheered her on too.... but that was outdoors in a noisy environment and not at all the same as being relaxed at home and hear some bloke suddenly shouting in an angry voice 'jesus you arsehole what are you doing' at the people on tv who can't even hear him.

😂😂😂😂
You are very funny!

Houseofpainjumparound · 17/03/2025 08:27

My DH is passionate about Rugby and I knew that when I met him. He has the tendency to yell at the ref when watching TV and when watching it in person.

I like rugby too and will shout when I can clearly see the issue (I'm not great at spotting foul play) when my husband shouts i give him a look and roll my eyes.... if its after children bedtime I will shush him.

I think when someone is passionate about something they put their whole self in. I was the same when watching peers in dance competitions, or when clapping and cheering at the end of a stage production.

But OP i am a little with you, sometimes I find the whole shouting unnecessary especially when the people on the pitch and at the game can hear you 😂

zeibesaffron · 17/03/2025 08:43

I shout all the time, louder than DH mostly #bigsportsfan ⚽️🏈🎾

Northernladdette · 17/03/2025 08:53

Nothing to do with sport, more to do with considering your neighbours if you’re attached 🙄

NavyTurtle · 17/03/2025 09:22

I am the one doing the shouting in our house at the rugby. 65F . But then we live in the middle of a field in Ireland. Buy some ear plugs. He's having a bit of fun. Too much misery in the world.

BeaAndBen · 17/03/2025 09:28

I preemptively text the neighbours to apologise when a 6 Nations match is about to start.

There is a pub about 800 yards away. During World Cup matches I can tell when we’ve scored from the roar.
