Why do men think it's ok to shout when there's rugby or football on tv?

Really annoys me, there's rugby or something on tv and my neighbour has made me jump out of my skin several times already with his stupid shouting. It's so annoying that men think it's ok to shout in their stupid bellowing voices.

I think you’re being really precious if you’re “jumping out of your skin” because of the sound of a sports fan shouting. I mean…. Really?

Martymcfly24 · 15/03/2025 17:40

Should have heard the shouting this house from both sexes this week during Cheltenham! In fact I may have been the winner in the volume stakes (if not the money😭)

Iknowaboutpopular · 15/03/2025 17:42

My husband does this when he watches his team. And I can't tell you how much it annoys me when it makes me jump. I tut at him and say "for god sake Mr know!"

When I do it while watching rugby, it's fine though. Obviously. 😁

GreenWheat · 15/03/2025 17:43

I am trying to picture a bunch of people watching a live sporting event in absolute silence, save for maybe a small ripple of applause at an appropriate juncture 🤣

Yes I honestly do jump out of my skin! I am one of those people who frequently jumps when someone walks into the room and speaks etc though. I've always been a bit like that.

Also my neighbourhood is very peaceful, I hardly ever hear a noise round here so it's unexpected and sudden when he does it. Urghh it's just a noise I hate, that deep throuty shouting it sounds so aggresive to me. I guess that's why I prefer being at home than being in a pub, I'm not a party animal.

If your H and male relatives do it OP why don’t you ask them why they do it instead of a largely female forum? Perhaps you can ask them to tone it down in case other female neighbours are jumping out of their skins as well.

namechangeGOT · 15/03/2025 17:46

They (men and women) think it’s okay, because it is okay. They’re shouting not launching a nuclear attack.

Yes I have told my DH it's horrible please don't shout like that.

Actually I've just remembered my mum (who would be 94 if she was still alive) shouting at the wrestling during the 1970s/1980s.

Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks used to send her into a frenzy! 🤣🤣

My Granny too.

The reason I said men is because I've never heard a woman doing it. I've only ever heard the deep sudden horrible shout from blokes when they're watching sport. There is a woman living next door too, but I've never heard her shout. Maybe she's not into sport or maybe the man's voice is deeper so travels further? Women's voices aren't so aggresive sounding. My DH does it too. I've also heard my uncles and my brothers do it. I've never heard my mum do it or any other woman.

Women's voices aren't so aggresive sounding.

Another sweeping generalisation.

Stinkbomb · 15/03/2025 17:50

I shout too when my football team is playing (Nottingham Forest) or if England are playing Rugby - why just Men??

Chewbecca · 15/03/2025 17:51

Yeah, I do it too. I don’t have a load voice tbh but I am expressing the exact same emotion my male counterparts are. It’s sport!

Miaowzabella · 15/03/2025 17:53

Try shouting back 'it's only a bloody game'.

Same with my great uncle. He used to slam his hand on the arm if the chair and leap out of his seat.

Do you remember the audience shouting, “He’s in! He’s in! He’s in!”

Good ole Shirley Crabtree 😂

FreddoSwaggins · 15/03/2025 17:53

It's just the excitement.

And it's all good - even for men, unless whoever roars and screams at sport looks down at young girls screaming and hollering at concerts. Criticism of young girls which certainly happens.

TonTonMacoute · 15/03/2025 17:54

I've been yelling my head off this afternoon!

DontCallMeKidDontCallMeBaby · 15/03/2025 17:54

I know the football team my neighbour supports, because I’ve heard her celebrating goals during matches. She’s a retired reception teacher, and apparently was frequently asked by the children to demonstrate keepie-upies because she’s so good at them.

I’ve also been up to shout at the tv during a match. Massively looking forward to the Newcastle game tomorrow.

Rivari · 15/03/2025 17:54

I hate it too, my DH doesn't do it thankfully but my dad does and I really don't like it at all, I think it's so unnecessary.

blcakgaragedoor · 15/03/2025 17:56

Oh heavens. I have lost my voice on more than one occasion while watching Ireland play rugby!!! It’s bad for my heart too.

crumblingschools · 15/03/2025 17:56

Just shouted then watching the rugby!

DareDevil223 · 15/03/2025 17:59

I despise rugby but I've been known to scream "Get the fuck in!!!!" while jumping around the room when my football team score.

derxa · 15/03/2025 18:00

I’ve heard it all now 🙄

KIlliePieMyOhMy · 15/03/2025 18:02

I shout a lot at BBC Casualty.

GetDressedYouMerryGentlemen · 15/03/2025 18:02

My lovely, slightly deaf, neighbours of 20 years are due to more in early May meaning the new neighbours will be in place for the sharp end of the promotion push by my football team. If it goes down to the wire they will definitely hear me shouting. DH on the other hand doesn't what sport.

Oooh that’ll show him 🙄
