What can you not do, but wish you could, that most people seem to enjoy doing?

Something that doesn't really affect your life but you feel it would enhance your life.
Mine is swimming. I can kind of do it, but only for a short length, I don't enjoy it as it's such an effort to go a short way.

What about you?

Speak a foreign language fluently. I learned basic French, German and Dutch but never had the self discipline / skill to progress further. I’d also like to actually enjoy running. I run a bit in the gym to warm up, but I don’t really enjoy it so I lose interest after about 5 minutes.

Same as you, @omgitchiness swimming. I'm really fearful of water and can probably swim 25m at a push but couldn't contemplate swimming anywhere where I knew I'd be out of my depth (I'm just about ok if I start at the deep end of a pool) When I'm on holiday and I see people jumping into pools, going in the sea, and going on water slides I really wish I liked it. (I'm fine with water slides that don't go into a deep pool)

A friend of mine has just learned to swim as an adult. My mum learned in her 60s.
My friend had lessons in a local private pool.

JennyForeigner · 14/03/2025 21:44

Relax. I have two parents who never stopped - at least until retirement. I look at them with envy now as they make time for relaxation, reading books and recharging, and I hope I get there one day too.

Helpmechooseausername · 14/03/2025 21:44

Me too with the French plaits! I can do normal plaits but don't have enough fingers to do French ones!

Can't run or crochet, or do cartwheels or handstands. The thought of throwing myself at the ground and expecting my arms to support me is bloody terrifying!!

Can, however, swim like a fish, for hours without getting tired. Underwater is an extra joy!

LasVegass · 14/03/2025 21:22

I can’t do that thing where you roll up the sides of your tongue. It wouldn’t be of any use, I know, but I’d like to know what it feels like.

That's a genetic thing! If your parents can then you can!

the80sweregreat · 14/03/2025 21:46

Gardening is hard work. People with green fingers have magical powers. It’s all passed me by. Expensive hobby too.

Cakeandponies · 14/03/2025 21:46

I wish I could enjoy coffee, I'm so jealous of people going into Costa and ordering a frappe latte hazelnut drink thing. Sadly just the smell makes me want to hurl, I only like tea and can't find it in myself to pay £6 odd for something I can make for peanuts myself. But seeing people walking out with the cups makes me wish I could join them!

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 14/03/2025 20:36

Play snooker/pool. I've never managed to work out how to hold the cue and actually move it at the same time. My brain just can't cope with it.

I also can't swim. I look like I'm drowning when I try.

That's weird cos I'm a klutz dyspraxic but great at pool. I have difficulty standing up and walking in a straight line but great at parallel parking

Somethingthecatdraggedin7 · 14/03/2025 21:52

Walk normally unaided. Stand up straight. Sit normally without pain. Have a bath or a shower. Drive again. Leave the house alone. Have a full night’s sleep. Do basic stuff at home instead of having to pay someone. Look after horses and even ride again.
In my dreams I can walk and do everything I used to be able to do and sometimes if I wake up suddenly I still think I can for a moment.

shellyleppard · 14/03/2025 21:57

Go for a long walk. Struggling with my mobility and have to use a wheeled walker to get around. I miss my long walks 😔

I wonder how it’s passed down. My kids and DH all can. I don’t know about mum & dad, but I’m seeing them tomorrow 😛

Memorable · 14/03/2025 21:58

Agree about gardening. It’s outdoor housework and the housework indoors is bad enough.

God yes to running and exercise. Or The Gym. Even the word Gym smells of old pe kit and school

Im adding drinking tea (or anything hot). I just don’t like it. But it’s so antisocial and it flummoxes people. I hate the hooha it causes with people rummaging round in the back of cupboards for old squash bottles to give me a drink I don’t want. Sometimes I just have the tea and scald my mouth to avoid the fuss

Verdansk84 · 14/03/2025 22:00

id love to do pencil drawings, the amout of creativity i could achieve and the art i could produce would be omg

Poppymeldrum · 14/03/2025 22:03

I'd love to be able to

Whistle (id love to be able to whistle as I Potter about)
Crochet (no amount of YouTube vids help)
Run (I have arthritis in my knee)
Sing (I was once singing I'm the shower and my darling mil thought a cat was being tortured)
Dance (I look like I'm having a fit)
Concentrate (I have the attention span of a flea)
Wear a heel higher than half an inch (see arthritis)
Be able to walk in a straight line without tripping over/walking into something/falling off something
Drive (my parents paid all costs including a car each for my brothers but refused to help me as I'm female/the scapegoat)
Wallpaper a room (knowing how cack handed I am,the wall would probably fall down)

CharlotteCChapel · 14/03/2025 22:06

Singing- I have a vocal range of about 3 notes, not octaves, riding a bike - can no longer swing my leg to get on due to arthritis. Draw- equivalent to my Singing ability .

Heebeebee · 14/03/2025 22:08

Drive!! I have tried so hard, spent 1000's, and I just can't do it. The driving part I can do but I can't multitask, I have no spacial awareness, I don't trust my instincts and I'm horribly anxious and just a menace on the road. I so wish I could drive.

NinjaFurtive · 14/03/2025 22:12

Be around dogs.

I'm absolutely terrified of all of them. Not because I think they're all going to attack me or they're awful creatures but it's just an irrational, deep seated fear. I can't even go near a gentle, docile, non barking one.

I have to pick where I walk really carefully as any suggestion of a dog appearing off lead or barking at me from behind a gate or fence and I'm done.

I've had therapy, I constantly look positively at them and try to change my fear but I turn to a panicky mess if I have to go near one.

SallyWD · 14/03/2025 22:13

Play a musical instrument

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 14/03/2025 22:16

qandatime · 14/03/2025 19:54

Knit or crochet, I’ve tried and tried and I can’t get it.

Have you been taught by an actual person in real life, or just tried to learn from books or videos?

ILovePeriodDramas · 14/03/2025 22:16

I would love to be able to sing in tune. I do enjoy trying, but would love to join a choir.

Mummysgogetter · 14/03/2025 22:17

Roller skate or ice skate confidently and without fear. It looks such fun

BillyILash · 14/03/2025 22:26

Sing, I’m completely tone deaf but I’d love to be able to sing.

Also have coordination, I have none, I’m like a flaying monkey trying to do any kind of coordinated dance/activity.

HellDorado · 14/03/2025 22:39

Sing really well. I love to sing and I’m okay, but my dream would be a beautiful singing voice.

Dreamskies · 14/03/2025 22:54

Ddakji · 14/03/2025 19:52

Enjoy exercising. Like, I can do it but I simply don’t get any enjoyment out of it so never carry on for long.

Same. Though I can swim for days! Throw me in a lake or pool or sea even after a year out of water and I’ll crack out an easy mile. No idea why, it’s like I was meant to swim rather than be on land 🤣

TheSilentSister · 14/03/2025 22:57

I must admit a lot of things I've always want to do, I've learnt. I've sailed, I've done horse riding, I've scuba dived, I've done Ceroc (mostly Jive moves) as I couldn't dance for toffee before. I've done various educational courses and currently learning BSL. I just get a bee in my bonnet and think 'I want to do that!'
I now have a garden worthy of keeping nice. I'm fine at mowing and trimming but now I want to learn about plants. I did dressmaking at school, I have a sewing machine and tailors dummy (inherited) so also on my list is to start sewing and maybe even designing my own clothes. Life is for learning and you're never too old.
